RAMA

(=hauteur ; le mot hébreu est généralement écrit avec l'article : la hauteur).

1. La plus connue sans doute des villes de ce nom est celle de Benjamin, sur la frontière de Juda et d'Israël (Jos 18:25,1Ro 15:17 et suivants), peut-être la moderne er-Râm, sur une colline (800 m.) à 8 km. au Nord de Jérusalem. C'est d'elle qu'il est question dans divers récits : Débora siégeant sous le palmier (Jug 4:5), le Lévite de Bethléhem (Jug 19:13), le dénombrement d'Esdras (Esd 2:26), le retour des Benjamites (Ne 11:33), la description par Ésaïe de la conquête assyrienne (Esa 10:29), l'allusion au tombeau de Rachel (Jer 31:15, cf. 1Sa 10:2, Mt 2:18), la mention du lieu d'origine de Siméi (1Ch 27:27), la libération de Jérémie (Jer 40:1).

2. Rama, lieu de naissance, résidence et sépulture de Samuel (1Sa 1:19 2:11 etc.), s'appelait aussi Ramathaïm (=les deux hauteurs, 1Ma 11:34) ou Ramathaïm-Tsophim (=les deux hauteurs des habitants du pays de Tsuph, 1Sa 1:1). Pour son identification, qui est incertaine, les principaux endroits proposés sont : la moderne Beit-Rîma, à 20 km. à l'Ouest de Silo et à une égale distance au Nord-O, de Béthel ; Ramallah, à 5 km. au Sud-O, de Béthel ; Rentîs, à 13 km. au Nord-E, de Lydde, endroit où l'on a vu aussi le lieu d'origine de Joseph d'Arimathée (voir ce mot) ; et, moins probablement, Nebi Samouîl, montagne célèbre (900 m.) à 7 km. au Nord-O, de Jérusalem.

3. Rama du Sud, ville de Siméon (Jos 19:8), la même que Ramoth du Midi (1Sa 30:27) ; appelée aussi Baalath-Béer.

4. Ville d'Asser, près de Tyr (Jos 19:29).

5. Ville forte de Nephthali (Jos 19:36).

6. Abréviation pour Ramoth-Galaad (cf. 2Ro 8:29 et 2Ch 22:6).

7. Transcription de la Vers. Syn. dans Eze 27:22, pour Raéma (voir ce mot).
