REJETON

Les traducteurs se servent de ce mot pour rendre diverses expressions hébraïques qui sont parfois traduites aussi par : racine (voir ce mot), germe, semence, plant, rameau, postérité (voir ce mot).

Au sens propre, c'est le nouveau jet que pousse une plante par sa racine (Job 14:7,9).

Au sens figuré, c'est la descendance de l'homme (Ge 49:22, Job 15:30, Esa 14:30), en particulier celle d'une maison royale (Da 11:7). Ce terme est très important dans son sens messianique : il désigne l'Israël de l'avenir (Esa 6:13 37:32 44:3 60:21), et surtout le Messie lui-même. Ce dernier apparaît déjà, par exemple, dans le vieux texte de 2Sa 23:5. Esaïe (Esa 11:1), comparant la maison de David à un arbre brisé, annonce que de sa racine (Isaï) sortira le rejeton auquel l'avenir appartient (le terme hébreu nètsèr employé ici explique sans doute le mot « Nazaréen » dans Mt 2:23). Ce rejeton s'élèvera si haut qu'il sera vu de tous et servira de bannière aux nations (Esa 11:10).

Le serviteur de l'Éternel est aussi comparé à un rejeton, dans Esa 53:2. (cf. Esa 61:11) Ézéchiel déclare que Sédécias, le roi infidèle, sera remplacé dans l'avenir par un rejeton de sa race, le Messie (Eze 17:22,24). Jérémie appelle le roi messianique « le germe » (Jer 23:5 33:15 cf. Esa 4:2). Ce terme, en hébreu tsemakh, est repris par Zacharie comme une sorte de nom propre pour désigner le Messie (Za 3:8 6:12). Dans le N.T., Ro 15:12 parle du rejeton de Jessé (=Isaï) en citant Esa 11:1,10, et l'Apocalypse (Ap 5:5 22:16) donne au Messie le titre de « rejeton de David ». V B.
