La croyance au retour des esprits des morts et à leur réapparition occasionnelle appartenait aux superstitions des peuples orientaux, y compris les Hébreux. Pour empêcher les esprits des gens morts de mort violente de ressortir de leur tombeau, on couvrait celui-ci de pierres, et chaque passant y ajoutait la sienne. (cf. Jos 7:26 8:29,2Sa 18:17)

Les pratiques nécromanciennes, évocation des défunts, furent connues même des Israélites (voir Divination, 5) : ex., l'évocation de l'ombre de Samuel par la pythonisse (1Sa 28:7-25), et son apparition est appelée « un dieu » (élohim, v. 13, cf. Esa 8:19) ; comp., dans l'Odyssée, les pratiques du devin Tirésias. Ces évocations d'esprits furent bientôt proscrites en Israël (1Sa 28:3,9, Le 19:31 20:6,27, De 18:11, cf. 2Ro 21:6 23:24,1Ch 10:13, etc.). Divers genres de démons étaient aussi tenus pour des esprits et censés hanter les déserts, les tombeaux, les lieux abandonnés (voir Démons, Bouc, Spectre des nuits). Voir enfin Fantôme.

      6 « Si un homme consulte d’une manière ou d’une autre les esprits des morts, ce qui est une forme d’idolâtrie, j’interviendrai contre lui en l’excluant du peuple d’Israël.

      3 A la mort de Samuel, tous les Israélites avaient pris part aux cérémonies de deuil, puis on l’avait enterré dans sa ville de Rama. Par ailleurs, Saül avait interdit dans son royaume les pratiques consistant à évoquer et interroger les morts.
      7 Alors Saül donna cet ordre à ses officiers : « Cherchez-moi une femme capable d’interroger les morts, pour que je puisse aller la consulter. » – « Il y en a une à En-Dor », lui répondit-on.
      8 Saül se déguisa et partit pour En-Dor avec deux compagnons ; il arriva de nuit chez la femme et lui dit : « Je désire que tu interroges un mort pour moi. Fais apparaître celui que je vais t’indiquer. » –
      9 « Mais, répondit la femme, tu sais bien que Saül a éliminé du pays les pratiques consistant à évoquer et interroger les morts. Est-ce que tu cherches à me tendre un piège pour me faire mourir ? » –
      10 « Par le Seigneur vivant, déclara Saül, je te jure que tu ne risques rien dans cette affaire. » –
      11 « Qui donc dois-je faire apparaître pour toi ? » demanda la femme. Il répondit : « Samuel. »
      12 Lorsque la femme vit Samuel, elle poussa un grand cri, puis elle interpella Saül en ces mots : « Mais tu es Saül ! Pourquoi m’as-tu trompée ? » –
      13 « Ne crains rien, répondit le roi. Dis-moi plutôt ce que tu as vu. » – « J’ai vu une sorte de fantôme qui montait des profondeurs de la terre », dit-elle.
      14 Le roi reprit : « Comment est-il ? » – « C’est un homme âgé, enveloppé d’un manteau », dit-elle. Saül comprit qu’il s’agissait bien de Samuel, et il s’inclina respectueusement jusqu’à terre.
      15 Samuel lui demanda : « Pourquoi as-tu troublé mon repos ? Pourquoi m’as-tu fait appeler ? » – « Je suis tellement angoissé, répondit Saül. Les Philistins m’ont déclaré la guerre et Dieu s’est détourné de moi. Il ne me répond plus, ni par un prophète, ni par un rêve. Alors je t’ai fait appeler : viens me dire ce que je dois faire. » –
      16 « Pourquoi m’interroger, moi ? dit Samuel. Tu vois bien que le Seigneur lui-même s’est détourné de toi et qu’il est devenu ton ennemi.
      17 Il a accompli ce que j’avais annoncé de sa part : il t’a repris la royauté pour la donner à un autre, à David.
      18 Tu as refusé d’obéir aux ordres du Seigneur, en n’exterminant pas complètement les Amalécites. C’est pourquoi le Seigneur te traite aujourd’hui de cette manière.
      19 Il va te livrer, ainsi que ton peuple, au pouvoir des Philistins. Demain, toi et tes fils, vous serez avec moi dans le monde des morts, et ton armée sera au pouvoir des Philistins. »
      20 Dès qu’il eut entendu ces paroles de Samuel, Saül s’écroula de tout son long, saisi d’une peur épouvantable. De plus il était sans force, n’ayant rien mangé depuis le jour précédent.
      21 La femme s’approcha de lui et vit combien il était épouvanté. Alors elle lui dit : « J’ai obéi à tes ordres. Au risque de ma vie, j’ai fait ce que tu m’ordonnais.
      22 Maintenant, écoute-moi à ton tour : je vais t’apporter un peu de nourriture ; tu mangeras pour reprendre des forces avant de te remettre en route. »
      23 Saül refusa de manger quoi que ce soit, mais ses compagnons et la femme insistèrent, si bien qu’il finit par accepter ; il se releva de terre et s’assit sur le lit.
      24 Sans tarder, la femme tua un veau qu’elle engraissait, puis elle prit de la farine, fit de la pâte et cuisit des galettes de pain.
      25 Elle servit ce repas à Saül et à ses compagnons. Après avoir mangé, ils se mirent en route alors qu’il faisait encore nuit.

      2 Samuel 18

      17 On prit le corps d’Absalom, on le jeta dans une grande fosse en pleine forêt, et on éleva sur lui un gros tas de cailloux. Pendant ce temps, les soldats d’Absalom fuyaient, chacun rentrant chez soi.

      7 Then Saul said to his servants, "Seek me a woman who has a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her." His servants said to him, "Behold, there is a woman who has a familiar spirit at Endor."
      8 Saul disguised himself, and put on other clothing, and went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he said, "Please divine to me by the familiar spirit, and bring me up whomever I shall name to you."
      9 The woman said to him, "Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off those who have familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?"
      10 Saul swore to her by Yahweh, saying, "As Yahweh lives, no punishment shall happen to you for this thing."
      11 Then the woman said, "Whom shall I bring up to you?" He said, "Bring Samuel up for me."
      12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice; and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, "Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!"
      13 The king said to her, "Don't be afraid. For what do you see?" The woman said to Saul, "I see a god coming up out of the earth."
      14 He said to her, "What does he look like?" She said, "An old man comes up. He is covered with a robe." Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground, and showed respect.
      15 Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me, to bring me up?" Saul answered, "I am very distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me, and answers me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I shall do."
      16 Samuel said, "Why then do you ask of me, since Yahweh has departed from you and has become your adversary?
      17 Yahweh has done to you as he spoke by me. Yahweh has torn the kingdom out of your hand, and given it to your neighbor, even to David.
      18 Because you didn't obey the voice of Yahweh, and didn't execute his fierce wrath on Amalek, therefore Yahweh has done this thing to you this day.
      19 Moreover Yahweh will deliver Israel also with you into the hand of the Philistines; and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. Yahweh will deliver the army of Israel also into the hand of the Philistines."
      20 Then Saul fell immediately his full length on the earth, and was terrified, because of the words of Samuel. There was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.
      21 The woman came to Saul, and saw that he was very troubled, and said to him, "Behold, your handmaid has listened to your voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have listened to your words which you spoke to me.
      22 Now therefore, please listen also to the voice of your handmaid, and let me set a morsel of bread before you; and eat, that you may have strength, when you go on your way."
      23 But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, constrained him; and he listened to their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat on the bed.
      24 The woman had a fattened calf in the house. She hurried and killed it; and she took flour, and kneaded it, and baked unleavened bread of it.
      25 She brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they ate. Then they rose up, and went away that night.

      2 Samuel 18

      17 They took Absalom, and cast him into the great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones. Then all Israel fled everyone to his tent.

      13 So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against Yahweh, because of the word of Yahweh, which he didn't keep; and also because he asked counsel of one who had a familiar spirit, to inquire,

      19 When they tell you, "Consult with those who have familiar spirits and with the wizards, who chirp and who mutter:" shouldn't a people consult with their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?
