Cette poussière minérale bien connue, provenant de la désagrégation de roches calcaires ou siliceuses, se trouve en abondance en Orient, soit dans les grandes plages et dunes des côtes de Palestine, depuis St-Jean-d'Acre jusqu'au delta du Nil, soit dans le grand désert sablonneux de Libye et d'Egypte, qui enserre étroitement ce fleuve jusqu'aux bras de son embouchure.

Ce sable de l'Egypte est mentionné dans Ex 2:12 ; ailleurs il s'agit des sables des plages, limite de la mer (Jer 5:22, cf. Ap 13:1 ; dans De 33:19, les « trésors cachés dans le sable » font allusion au verre, découverte et industrie des Phéniciens de ces côtes).

Le sable est surtout cité comme symbole de l'innombrable : (Os 1:10) Sir 1:2 (Heb 11:12 etc.), postérité, (Ge 22:17 32:12 Jer 33:22) deuils (Jer 15:8), peuple (1Ro 4:20, Esa 10:22 48:19), armée (Jos 11:4, Jug 7:12,1Sa 13:5,2Sa 17:11, 1Ma 11:1), captifs (Hab 1:9), oiseaux (Ps 78:27), jours de la vie (Job 29:18), sagesse (1Ro 4:29), pensées divines (Ps 139:18) ; il représente aussi ce qui est pesant (Job 6:3, Pr 27:3, Sir 22:15), comme la montée sablonneuse ce qui est pénible (Sir 25:20), tandis que le grain de sable représente l'imperceptible (Sir 18:10). Dans la parabole des deux maisons, Jésus fait du sable le symbole de l'inconsistance, des fondations fragiles et trompeuses (Mt 7:26) ; le parallèle de Luc (Lu 6:49) dit : la terre sans fondements, sol friable qui, comme le sable, est opposé au roc.
