Le siècle, durée de cent ans, n'est pas connu des auteurs bibliques, pour qui il n'existait guère de période plus longue qu'une génération (voir Temps).

L'hébreu ôlam de l'A. T, comme le grec aïôn du N.T. sont rendus au pluriel par « siècles », au sens indéterminé d' « âges » incommensurables, soit dans le passé soit dans l'avenir, exprimant ainsi l'idée d'éternité ;

exemples :

l'Éternel, « rocher des siècles » (Esa 26:4), son règne « de tous les siècles » (Ps 145:13 ; cf. 1Ti 1:17), et les expressions : « avant [tous] les siècles » (1Co 2:7, Tit 1:2,2Ti 1:9), « dans tous les siècles » (Ro 11:36), « aux siècles des siècles » (Ro 16:27,1Pi 4:11 5:11, Apoc, 1:6-18 22:5 etc.).
Au singulier, « ce siècle » représente le monde (voir ce mot) considéré comme l'époque en cours, avec une nuance de blâme contre sa vanité (Lu 16:8,1Co 1:20 2:6,2Co 4:4, Ga 1:4, Eph 1:21) ; il est souvent opposé au siècle à venir (Mr 10:30, Eph 2:7, Heb 6:5) et parfois appelé avec plus de précision le présent siècle (Ro 12:2, Tit 2:12,2Ti 4:9).

L'accomplissement des antiques prophéties par Jésus-Christ donnait aux chrétiens l'impression d'être à la fin des siècles, ou des âges, ou des temps (1Co 10:11, Heb 9:26).

Les apocalypses reposaient sur la division absolue de l'histoire en deux âges ou siècles (éons), le siècle présent et le siècle à venir, celui du règne de la force brutale et celui du règne éternel de Dieu, séparés par le grand jugement. (cf. Da 7:26 et suivant)
