Le mot hébreu gôpher désigne dans Ge 6:14 une sorte de gomme résineuse, et le soufre est désigné par le terme apparenté : gophrith

Le soufre est une substance minérale ordinairement jaunâtre très répandue dans tous les terrains géologiques. C'est un puissant minéralisateur. Il peut se trouver en certaines contrées, comme la Sicile ou les abords de la mer Morte, en très grandes quantités.

Corps simple combustible, dont la combustion dégage le gaz sulfureux, par exemple dans les éruptions volcaniques. Voilà pourquoi, dans les phénomènes qui détruisirent Sodome et Gomorrhe, il y avait des tourbillons sulfureux (Ge 19:24, Lu 17:29).

D'où les fréquentes mentions du soufre, en style figuré, pour représenter les châtiments de Dieu (De 29:23, Job 18:15, Ps 11:6, Esa 30:33 34:9, Eze 38:22), et dans les descriptions apocalyptiques (Ap 9:17 14:10 19:20 20:10 21:8).
