SOURCE ou FONTAINE

Lieu où sort de terre naturellement une eau courante, ou « eau vive » comme dit parfois la Bible (Jer 17:13 etc.).

Ces deux mots équivalents (fontaine vient du latin fons =source) sont employés en contraste avec la citerne (voir ce mot) ou avec le puits (Le 11:36, Jer 2:13) ; mais il peut y avoir des puits alimentés par une source, comme le puits de Jacob, qui est appelé pêgê --source (Jn 4:6,10, et suivant).

Les sources abondent au pied de l'Hermon et le long de l'arête montagneuse qui va de la Haute Galilée jusqu'au delà d'Hébron ; mais elles sont plus rares et plus pauvres en Judée.

Dans un pays qui reste sans pluie une moitié de l'année, la possession des sources est une fortune convoitée (Jug 1:15, Jug 7:7).

Quelques-unes sont nommées :

Élim (No 33:9), Nephthoach (Jos 15:9), Jizréel (1Sa 29:1),
ou localisées (Ge 16:7, Jug 7:3,12 12:7).

Beaucoup de noms d'endroits sont précédés du mot hébreu En, qui désigne la source (prononcer enn ; comp, l'arabe aïn), par ex. : En-Roguel ou fontaine de Roguel (1Ro 1:9), En-Guédi (Jos 15:62), En-Dor (Jos 17:11), etc.

--Au figuré, fontaines et sources sont naturellement l'image de trésors matériels et de bénédictions spirituelles (De 33:28, Ps 36:10, Pr 13:14, Joe 3:18, Za 13:1, Bar 3:12, Jn 7:38, Ap 7:17 etc.). Voir Eau.
