TEMPS

Certains auteurs bibliques semblent avoir considéré le temps historique, celui qui a eu un « commencement » (Ge 1:1, Jn 1:1), comme un moment dans l'immensité de la durée (éternité), destiné à avoir une fin (Ap 10:6). Pour Dieu, « mille ans sont comme un jour » (2Pi 3:8, Ps 90:4). Nous n'avons pourtant pas à nous occuper des systèmes modernes concevant Dieu comme hors du temps ; cette préoccupation métaphysique est à peu près étrangère aux auteurs sacrés. Il s'agit ici, plus simplement, des divisions du temps adoptées par les hommes, où s'encadrent événements et circonstances de la Bible.

I Ancien Testament.

1.

LE JOUR.

La succession des jours et des nuits a toujours imposé la première division du temps, par l'obligatoire interruption du sommeil dans le cours de la pensée et de l'activité. Ce cadre enferme le récit sacerdotal de la création : (Ge 1) la séparation du jour et de la nuit marque le premier jour, avant toute autre manifestation, et les astres n'apparaissent que le 4 e jour, ce qui prouve l'agencement artificiel du système (voir Création, t. I, p. 250). Remarquer que chaque jour y est formé d'un soir et un matin, parce que pour les Hébreux la journée commence le soir, au coucher du soleil. Il va de soi que la notion d'aujourd'hui entraîne celle d'hier et de demain (Ex 5:14 8:23, Lu 13:32 et suivant, cf. Heb 13:8).

Les subdivisions quotidiennes : soir, matin, midi (Ps 55:18, etc.), avaient leur grande valeur pour des chasseurs ou des pêcheurs, des nomades, des agriculteurs, comme pour des gens sédentaires dont les occupations suivent plus ou moins le cours de la journée. Mais c'étaient trois étapes approximatives, presque continuellement apparentes par la position du soleil au-dessus de l'horizon, plutôt qu'à proprement parler des heures, qui ne parvinrent aux Juifs que par la civilisation romaine. On désignait plutôt des moments : par exemple la brise du soir (Ge 3:8, cf. Job 24:15), sur le soir =de nuit (Ex 12:18), l'aurore (Ge 19:15 32:24), la chaleur du jour (Ge 18:1,1Sa 11:9), ou bien des habitudes ménagères ou rituelles assez régulières (Ge 24:11,1Ro 18:29, Esd 9:4, Da 9:21). La curieuse expression : « entre les deux soirs » (Ex 12:6 29:39), a été interprétée de deux manières : entre le déclin du soleil à partir de 15 heures et sa disparition (Juifs, Talmud), ou bien entre sa disparition et le crépuscule (Samaritains). La nuit était divisée en trois veilles d'environ quatre heures chacune : la veille du milieu ou seconde veille (Jug 7:19) allait de 22 h. à 2 h. ; la veille du matin (Ex 14:24,1Sa 11:11), de 2 h. à 6 h. Pour la mystérieuse mesure du temps, dans le « signe » donné par Ésaïe à Achaz (2Ro 20:9,11), voir Cadran d'Achaz.

Les divers moments avaient leurs caractères propres. Pour les Israélites pieux, le matin était l'heure entre toutes favorable à la prière (Ps 5:4 59:17 88:14 92:2 et suivant) ; mais la prière quotidienne avait trois moments consacrés : matin, midi, soir (Ps 55:18). L'heure de midi (1Ro 18:27,29,2Ro 20:16) était celle de la grande lumière et de la forte chaleur (Am 8:9, De 28:29, Job 5:14, Esa 59:10 etc.), moment du repas (Ge 43:16), et du repos des gens (2Sa 4:5) et des troupeaux (Ca 1:7), emblème de sécurité (Jer 15:8, Sop 2:4), de clarté (Ps 37:6, Job 11:17), de bénédictions (Esa 58:10). Son ardeur brûlante était aussi connue pour dangereuse (Sir 34:19 43:3, cf. Ps 121:6). Dans Ps 91:5,6 quatre locutions poétiques évoquent des dangers permanents, « de nuit, de jour, dans les ténèbres, en plein midi », qui peuvent tous désigner la peste, citée dès le verset 3 ; dans la quatrième, « la mortalité qui sévit en plein midi », les LXX, la Vulg, et la Pechitto ont rattaché le verbe hébreu yâchoud (=sévir) à chéd, nom des démons (voir ce mot), d'où leurs traductions : « l'accident, le démon de midi » ou « le souffle du démon de midi », expression que la littérature moderne a appliquée à des tentations de l'âge mûr, ce qui introduit un tout autre ordre d'idées.

2.

LA SEMAINE.

Ses désignations en hébreu signifient : sept ou sabbat. On sait l'importance mystique du chiffre sept (voir Nombre, III) ; c'est à ce caractère sacré que l'on doit la semaine, quart approximatif du mois lunaire, laquelle a été transportée dans le récit de la Création (Ge 1). La première mention explicite de la semaine est faite à propos de Jacob (Ge 29:27 et suivant), et appliquée à une semaine d'années. Pour le système sabbatique construit sur le chiffre sept, voir Sabbat. Le 10 e jour est aussi mis à part quelquefois comme exceptionnel (Ex 12:3, Le 16:29, Jos 4:19,2Ro 25:1). Les jours de la semaine étaient simplement désignés par leur chiffre, le 7 e seul ayant un nom : le sabbat.

3.

LES SAISONS.

Une des promesses de Dieu après le déluge garantit que les saisons ne seront plus bouleversées (Ge 8:22). Il n'est fait mention expresse dans la Bible que de l'été et de l'hiver (Ps 74:17, Jer 8:20 36:22, Za 14:8 etc.), les deux saisons dominantes en Orient, celle de la sécheresse et celle de la pluie (voir Palestine, V). Mais la poétique description de Ca 2:11 et suivant salue l'arrivée du printemps, dont le nom n'apparaît que dans l'expression : la pluie du printemps, ou pluies d'arrière-saison qui terminaient l'hiver (Job 29:23, Pr 16:15, Jer 3:3 etc.). Les indications chronologiques fondées sur les travaux des champs sont malgré tout inévitablement imprécises, variables d'une région à une autre (Ge 8:22, Ex 34:21, Le 26:5, Ru 1:22,2Sa 21:9). L'archéologue Macalister a trouvé à Guézer une sorte de calendrier agricole, un peu antérieur à l'exil, indiquant la correspondance de huit travaux de culture en cette région avec les périodes successives de l'année (Rev. Bbl., 1909). Toutefois, les saisons n'ont jamais été prises comme unités officielles pour la mesure du temps. i. Le mois. La division la plus naturelle, après celle des jours et des nuits, est en effet le mois, fixé par les phases de la lune (voir ce mot). La réapparition de la nouvelle lune était le signal de réjouissances (1Sa 20:5, No 10:10 etc.), et l'on fêtait aussi la pleine lune (Ps 81:4). C'est que pour les primitifs, les bergers, les cultivateurs, les nuits sans lune sont les plus redoutables. Les deux termes hébraïques qui désignent le mois signifient, l'un la lune, l'autre la nouveauté. Mais certains noms de mois furent déterminés par les saisons. Tels, les vieux noms des mois anciens qui se trouvent dans l'A.T. :

Abib (=jeunes épis) est un mois du printemps (Ex 13:4) ;

le nom du mois suivant, Ziv (1Ro 6:1-37), est interprété par les Targums : éclat des fleurs ;

Êthanim (=ruisseaux d'eau courante) est un mois d'automne (1Ro 8:2) ;

le nom du mois suivant, mois des pluies, est Bul (1Ro 6:37). Les deux derniers apparaissent dans des inscriptions phéniciennes et cypriotes, qui confirment leur origine cananéenne et leur antiquité.

L'exil fit connaître aux Israélites les mois babyloniens, qu'ils conservèrent après leur retour en Palestine. Sept sur douze sont mentionnés dans l'A.T. :

Nisan, l'ancien Abib, correspond à mars-avril (Ne 2:1, Est 3:7) ;

Iyyar, l'ancien Ziv, avril-mai, est cité par Josèphe (Ant.) ;

Sivan, mai-juin (Est 8:9) ;

Thammouz, juin-juillet, doit son nom (ou l'a donné) au dieu babylonien d'origine sumérienne dont la fête se célébrait à cette époque de l'année, fin de toute végétation ou flore printanière (voir Thammuz) ;

Ab, juillet-août, nommé par Josèphe ;

Ëlul, août-septembre (Ne 6:15, 1Ma 14:27) ;

Tisri, l'ancien E thanim, septembre-octobre, cité par Josèphe ;

Marchesvan, l'ancien Bul, octobre-novembre ;

Kisleu, novembre-décembre (Za 7:1, Ne 1:1 ; Chasleu : 1Ma 1:34 4:59,2Ma 1:9,18 10:5) ;

10° Tébeth, décembre-janvier (Est 2:16) ;

11° Sébat, janvier-février (Za 1:7 ; Sabat : 1Ma 16:14) ;

12° Adar, février-mars (Est 3:7, Esd 6:15, 1Ma 7:43), le dernier mois, était suivi de temps en temps d'un second Adar, treizième mois occasionnel destiné à rétablir l'accord entre l'année lunaire et l'année solaire.

L'ANNEE.

En effet, les mois lunaires n'ayant que 29 à 30 jours, l'année lunaire a environ 11 jours de moins que l'année solaire (la durée totale du déluge, jusqu'au rétablissement de la terre sèche, d'après Ge 7:11 et Ge 8:11, est sans doute évaluée à 12 mois lunaires plus 10 jours, soit une année solaire ; mais les données des textes hébreux et grecs marquent ici des divergences et des complications qui montrent une chronologie encore mouvante lors de la composition du récit). Il fallait donc tous les deux ou trois ans combler l'écart par un mois supplémentaire. Le sanhédrin procédait à cet égard d'une manière assez primitive : voir Chronologie du N.T., t. I, pp. 200, 201. On n'a pas encore pu interpréter convenablement la chronologie donnée dans Ge 5.

Avant l'exil, l'année israélite, qui avait été jusque-là celle d'un peuple agricole, commençait fort probablement à l'automne, à la fin des récoltes et du battage. Ainsi, la fête des Récoltes se célébrait à la fin de l'année (Ex 23:16 34:22) ; ce devait être la grande fête du renouvellement, ou du Nouvel An (voir Fêtes, I, 4). Cette célébration religieuse devait rester fixée à cette saison, même après l'adoption du calendrier babylonien pour l'année civile juive, qui commença dès lors à l'équinoxe de printemps. Il y eut donc deux calendriers : l'un religieux, dont aujourd'hui encore les Juifs pratiquants célèbrent le premier de l'an, et qui commença d'abord au 10 e jour du 7 e mois civil (Le 25:9, cf. Eze 40:1), plus tard au 1 er jour de ce mois (Le 23:24, No 29:1), dates qui correspondent au 21 septembre ou au 1er octobre ; l'autre calendrier, civil, partait du 1er jour du 1er mois (Nisan), correspondant à notre 21 mars.

Le rythme de l'année israélite suivait la vie agricole, et c'est autour de ses grandes dates que se fixèrent les manifestations religieuses et sociales d'Israël : les fêtes de la Pâque (14e jour du 1er mois), des Semaines ou Pentecôte (3e mois), des Trompettes ou des Tabernacles (7e mois), du Jeûne (7e mois), de la Dédicace (9e mois) et de Purim (12e mois). Les Apocryphes font allusion à deux autres calendriers.

Le macédonien. Le nom du mois dit Dioscorinthien dans 2Ma 11:21 ne se trouve pas ailleurs ; ce peut être une confusion, soit avec le 12 e mois macédonien, Dystros, qui correspond à mars, et qui est mentionné dans le ms. du Sinaï de Tob 2:12, soit avec le mois de Dios (corresp. à novembre), ou bien une création par ailleurs inconnue due à Antiochus, Épiphane. Le Xanthicus, nommé plus loin (2Ma 11:30,33,37), est le 1er mois (corresp. à avril).

Le calendrier égyptien est représenté dans 3Ma 6:38 par les mois de Pachon et d'Êpiphi, le 9 e et le 11 e ; les 40 jours indiqués là (cf. 4:15), du 25 Pachon au 4 Êpiphi, correspondent à la période : 20 mai-28 juin, et les 3 jours du 5 au 7 Êpiphi =29 juin-1 er juillet.

6.

LES AUTRES PERIODES.

Dans certains passages de Daniel, le mot temps (araméen îddân), déterminé numériquement, est la désignation apocalyptique d'une année (Da 4:16,23,25,32) ; la période indiquée dans Da 7:23 représente 1 + 2+1/2 =3 an et suivant 1/2 ce qui fut la durée des persécutions d'Antiochus (168 à 165 av. J. -C.) ; cette expression reparaît dans Ap 12:11.

Les périodes plus longues sont celles de 7 ans (De 16:1,12), années sabbatiques, et celles de 7 fois 7 ans, suivies du jubilé de la 50 e année (voir Sabbat, II et III) ; mais elles ne paraissent que pour les prescriptions cérémonielles (Le 25), et dans la pratique ne servaient pas à la mesure du temps. Des périodes à chiffres ronds (7, 10, 40) sont couramment indiquées, notamment celle de 40 ans qui correspond approximativement à une génération humaine (voir Nombre, III), mais sans se prêter à des calculs positifs (cf. pourtant Lettre de Jérémie 3).

Certains grands événements ont plus ou moins servi de points de départ pour le compte des années : l'exode, ou sortie d'Egypte (1Ro 6:1), l'exil en Babylonie (Eze 33:21 40:1), un mémorable tremblement de terre (Am 1:1, cf. Za 14:5) ; mais aucune de ces dates n'a ouvert une ère officielle (voir Rois [livre des], parag. 4). L'année 312 av. J. -C, où Séleucus Ier prit Babylone, fut le début de l'ère séleucide (1Ma 1:10), qui fut de longue durée, tandis que l'ère juive qui lui fut opposée sous les Macchabées, partant de l'accession du grand-prêtre Simon (1Ma 13:41 14:27), ne se maintint que fort peu de temps. II Nouveau Testament.

A l'époque de Jésus, le système des heures est décidément adopté ; mais on distingue entre les heures du jour (Jn 11:9), du matin au soir, et les veilles de la nuit, du soir au matin.

Les heures se comptent suivant la journée moyenne du temps des équinoxes, donc de 6 h. du matin à 6 h. du soir ; dans la pratique on cite surtout les heures multiples de 3, comme les plus faciles à évaluer d'après la hauteur du soleil (ce qui en trahit l'approximation) : la 3° heure =vers 9 h. du matin (Mr 15:25, Ac 2:15), la 6 e =vers midi (Mr 15:33, Ac 10:9), la 9 e =vers 3 h. de l'après-midi (Mr 15:33 et suivant et parallèle, Ac 3:1 10:30). On pense généralement que le 4 e évang, compte de la même manière, ce qui supposerait de sa part l'intention de rectifier une donnée de Marc : Jésus condamné vers midi (Jn 19:14), et non pas crucifié vers 9 h. (Mr 15:25) ; mais il n'est pas impossible que Jean ait adopté un compte analogue au nôtre, déjà connu chez les Romains, qui nous donnerait dans ce cas 6 h. du matin (Jn 19:14), et dans les autres 10 h. du matin (Jn 1:39), 6 h. du soir (4e), 7 h. du matin ou du soir (Jn 4:52). Pour la valeur figurée de « l'heure », voir ce mot.

Pour la division de la nuit en veilles, (cf. Ps 63:7 90:4 119:148, La 2:19) les trois veilles de quatre heures (A.T.) ont été remplacées par quatre veilles romaines, de trois heures chacune, clairement désignées dans Mr 13:35 : le soir (18 h. à 21 h.), minuit (21 h. à 24 h.), chant du coq (24 h. à 3 h.), matin (3 h. à 6 h.). Les rabbins attachaient une certaine importance à la veille du « chant du coq » : (cf. 3Ma 5:23) leur liturgie contient encore une prière pour ce moment-là ; on connaît la dramatique allusion de Jésus à Pierre au sujet de son reniement (Lu 22:34-60). Les 2 e et 3 e veilles sont aussi mentionnées par Jésus dans ses exhortations à la vigilance (Lu 12:38). La 4e veille, à la fin de la nuit, fut le moment de son arrivée sur la mer auprès de ses apôtres (Mr 6:48, Mt 14:25).

La désignation des jours chez les Juifs dépendait du jour sacré, celui du repos, le sabbat (voir ce mot), équivalent de notre samedi. La veille était le jour de sa préparation (voir ce mot), paraskeuê (Mt 27:62, Lu 23:54, Jn 19:31,42) ou prosabbaton (Mr 15:42). Il commençait le vendredi au coucher du soleil : fait capital pour la chronologie de la Passion. Le premier jour de la semaine est celui de la résurrection de Jésus (Mr 16:2 et parallèle), il devient bientôt pour les chrétiens « le jour du Seigneur » (voir art.), comme l'écrit le Voyant (Ap 1:10). Dans le judaïsme, le sabbat, les fêtes, les jeûnes avaient créé en quelque sorte une hiérarchie des valeurs entre jours, mois, années, à observer ; l'apôtre Paul voit dans ces préoccupations de « pauvres rudiments », périmés avec l'Évangile (Ga 4:9), et, tout en respectant les convictions des frères conservateurs en ce domaine (Ro 14:5 et suivant), il proclame la liberté chrétienne devant les ordonnances anciennes, « ombre des choses à venir » (Col 2:16 et suivant).

Mêmes mentions de saisons dans le N.T. que dans l'A.T. : été (Mr 13:28 et parallèle), hiver (Mr 13:18, Jn 10:22,1Co 16:6, Ac 28:11, Tit 3:12,2Ti 4:21) ; elles servent souvent à marquer une vague chronologie sans dates, mais complétée occasionnellement par les fêtes juives, points de repère au cours des années. Pour les préoccupations de chronologie du 4 e évang, autour de ces fêtes, voir Jean (évangile). Pour les précisions de temps dans le 3 e évang, et les Actes, voir Luc (évangile) ; le point de repère chronologique remarquable entre tous est celui par lequel cet évangile situe dans l'histoire générale l'apparition de Jean-Baptiste peu avant Jésus-Christ, par une énumération détaillée des personnages officiels alors en fonctions (Lu 3:1,2). Mais l'on sait que les plus anciens documents relatifs à l'ère chrétienne sont les calculs, d'ailleurs faux d'environ 4 ans, du moine Denys le Petit au VI e siècle seulement. La notion, en somme fort lâche, de génération (voir ce mot), rencontrée dans l'A.T., se trouve au seuil du N.T., comme charpente toute théorique de la généalogie de J. -C. (voir art.), dans l'évangile de Matthieu (Mt 1:17). Au delà de cette durée, dans toute la Bible il s'agit d'âges, longues périodes indéfinies, compensant l'absence de la notion trop arithmétique de siècle (voir ce mot).

Les deux expressions du N.T. : temps (khronoi) et moments (kairoi) , quelquefois réunies, déjà dans l'A. T, (cf. Sag 8:8 ; au singulier, Ec 3:1), sont ordinairement interprétées comme suit (cf. Trench, Syn. N.T., parag. 57). Le temps (khronos), la durée la plus étendue, se divise en moments particuliers, ou saisons (kaïroi) : des figues (Mr 11:13), de la moisson (Mt 13:30), de la mort du Christ (Ro 5:6), etc. Ainsi la version des LXX fait suivre très justement le khronos de Ec 3:1 de tous les kaïroï des sept versets suivants : litt., un moment pour naître et un moment pour mourir, etc. Dans un papyrus du II e siècle av. J. -C., une simple femme supplie son mari de revenir, eu égard à tout ce qu'elle a souffert, « pour ne rien dire de tant de temps qui a passé, --et quels moments ! » Le temps embrasse tous les moments possibles ; on peut donc dire le plus pour le moins : temps, pour : moments, et traiter en synonymes « les temps (kaïroï) de rafraîchissement » et « les temps (khronoï) de rétablissement » (Ac 3:20 et suivant), « les temps » de l'incarnation (khronos, Ga 4:4 ; kaïroï, Eph 1:10) ; mais on ne pourrait, à l'inverse, désigner du terme limitatif « moment » la réalité sans limite du « temps ». Donc, dans Ac 1:7 et 1Th 5:1, deux passages clairement relatifs au retour du Seigneur, « les temps » sont la durée indéfinie de l'Église de Dieu, et « les moments » en sont les points critiques, que Dieu a « prédéterminés avec leurs limites » (Ac 17:26), les jointures ou les articulations, où les lentes gestations des siècles viennent au jour dans les grands événements qui clôturent une période, en ouvrent une nouvelle, mais qui souvent ne paraissent tels aux hommes qu'avec le recul du temps lui-même : missions de saint Paul à travers l'empire romain, proclamation du christianisme comme religion d'État, grandes hérésies, Réformation, Méthodisme, réveils, etc. ; par-dessus tout, dans le passé l'oeuvre de Jésus de Nazareth, dans l'avenir le retour du Seigneur glorieux, moments du présent permanent où Jésus-Christ reste « le même, hier, aujourd'hui, éternellement » (Heb 13:8), « le Premier et le Dernier, le Vivant » (Ap 1:17 et suivant), Révélateur définitif de Celui qui, « d'éternité en éternité, est Dieu » (Ps 90:2).

      24 God said, "Let the earth produce living creatures after their kind, livestock, creeping things, and animals of the earth after their kind"; and it was so.
      25 God made the animals of the earth after their kind, and the livestock after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind. God saw that it was good.
      26 God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
      27 God created man in his own image. In God's image he created him; male and female he created them.

      11 The priest shall burn it on the altar: it is the food of the offering made by fire to Yahweh.

      13 and he shall lay his hand on its head, and kill it before the Tent of Meeting; and the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle its blood around on the altar.
      14 He shall offer from it as his offering, an offering made by fire to Yahweh; the fat that covers the innards, and all the fat that is on the innards,
      15 and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the loins, and the cover on the liver, with the kidneys, he shall take away.
      16 The priest shall burn them on the altar: it is the food of the offering made by fire, for a pleasant aroma; all the fat is Yahweh's.
      17 "'It shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings, that you shall eat neither fat nor blood.'"

      Lévitique 4

      1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
      2 "Speak to the children of Israel, saying, 'If anyone sins unintentionally, in any of the things which Yahweh has commanded not to be done, and does any one of them:
      3 if the anointed priest sins so as to bring guilt on the people, then let him offer for his sin, which he has sinned, a young bull without blemish to Yahweh for a sin offering.
      4 He shall bring the bull to the door of the Tent of Meeting before Yahweh; and he shall lay his hand on the head of the bull, and kill the bull before Yahweh.
      5 The anointed priest shall take some of the blood of the bull, and bring it to the Tent of Meeting.
      6 The priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle some of the blood seven times before Yahweh, before the veil of the sanctuary.
      7 The priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of sweet incense before Yahweh, which is in the Tent of Meeting; and he shall pour out all of rest of the blood of the bull at the base of the altar of burnt offering, which is at the door of the Tent of Meeting.
      8 He shall take all the fat of the bull of the sin offering off of it; the fat that covers the innards, and all the fat that is on the innards,
      9 and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the loins, and the cover on the liver, with the kidneys, he shall take away,
      10 as it is taken off of the bull of the sacrifice of peace offerings. The priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering.
      11 The bull's skin, all its flesh, with its head, and with its legs, its innards, and its dung,
      12 even the whole bull shall he carry forth outside the camp to a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn it on wood with fire. Where the ashes are poured out it shall be burned.
      13 "'If the whole congregation of Israel sins, and the thing is hidden from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done any of the things which Yahweh has commanded not to be done, and are guilty;
      14 when the sin in which they have sinned is known, then the assembly shall offer a young bull for a sin offering, and bring it before the Tent of Meeting.
      15 The elders of the congregation shall lay their hands on the head of the bull before Yahweh; and the bull shall be killed before Yahweh.
      16 The anointed priest shall bring of the blood of the bull to the Tent of Meeting:
      17 and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and sprinkle it seven times before Yahweh, before the veil.
      18 He shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar which is before Yahweh, that is in the Tent of Meeting; and the rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering, which is at the door of the Tent of Meeting.
      19 All its fat he shall take from it, and burn it on the altar.
      20 Thus shall he do with the bull; as he did with the bull of the sin offering, so shall he do with this; and the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven.
      21 He shall carry forth the bull outside the camp, and burn it as he burned the first bull. It is the sin offering for the assembly.
      22 "'When a ruler sins, and unwittingly does any one of all the things which Yahweh his God has commanded not to be done, and is guilty;
      23 if his sin, in which he has sinned, is made known to him, he shall bring as his offering a goat, a male without blemish.
      24 He shall lay his hand on the head of the goat, and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before Yahweh. It is a sin offering.
      25 The priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering. He shall pour out the rest of its blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering.
      26 All its fat he shall burn on the altar, like the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin, and he will be forgiven.
      27 "'If anyone of the common people sins unwittingly, in doing any of the things which Yahweh has commanded not to be done, and is guilty;

      32 "'If he brings a lamb as his offering for a sin offering, he shall bring a female without blemish.
      33 He shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering, and kill it for a sin offering in the place where they kill the burnt offering.
      34 The priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering; and all the rest of its blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar.
      35 All its fat he shall take away, like the fat of the lamb is taken away from the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest shall burn them on the altar, on the offerings of Yahweh made by fire; and the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin that he has sinned, and he will be forgiven.

      Lévitique 7

      1 "'This is the law of the trespass offering. It is most holy.
      2 In the place where they kill the burnt offering, he shall kill the trespass offering; and its blood he shall sprinkle around on the altar.
      3 He shall offer all of its fat: the fat tail, and the fat that covers the innards,
      4 and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the loins, and the cover on the liver, with the kidneys, shall he take away;
      5 and the priest shall burn them on the altar for an offering made by fire to Yahweh: it is a trespass offering.
      6 Every male among the priests may eat of it. It shall be eaten in a holy place. It is most holy.
      7 "'As is the sin offering, so is the trespass offering; there is one law for them. The priest who makes atonement with them shall have it.
      8 The priest who offers any man's burnt offering, even the priest shall have for himself the skin of the burnt offering which he has offered.
      9 Every meal offering that is baked in the oven, and all that is dressed in the pan, and on the griddle, shall be the priest's who offers it.
      10 Every meal offering, mixed with oil or dry, belongs to all the sons of Aaron, one as well as another.
      11 "'This is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which one shall offer to Yahweh.
      12 If he offers it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes mixed with oil.
      13 With cakes of leavened bread he shall offer his offering with the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving.
      14 Of it he shall offer one out of each offering for a heave offering to Yahweh. It shall be the priest's who sprinkles the blood of the peace offerings.
      15 The flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving shall be eaten on the day of his offering. He shall not leave any of it until the morning.
      16 "'But if the sacrifice of his offering is a vow, or a freewill offering, it shall be eaten on the day that he offers his sacrifice; and on the next day what remains of it shall be eaten:
      17 but what remains of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burned with fire.
      18 If any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings is eaten on the third day, it will not be accepted, neither shall it be imputed to him who offers it. It will be an abomination, and the soul who eats any of it will bear his iniquity.
      19 "'The flesh that touches any unclean thing shall not be eaten. It shall be burned with fire. As for the flesh, everyone who is clean may eat it;
      20 but the soul who eats of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, that belongs to Yahweh, having his uncleanness on him, that soul shall be cut off from his people.
      21 When anyone touches any unclean thing, the uncleanness of man, or an unclean animal, or any unclean abomination, and eats some of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which belong to Yahweh, that soul shall be cut off from his people.'"
      22 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
      23 "Speak to the children of Israel, saying, 'You shall eat no fat, of bull, or sheep, or goat.
      24 The fat of that which dies of itself, and the fat of that which is torn of animals, may be used for any other service, but you shall in no way eat of it.
      25 For whoever eats the fat of the animal, of which men offer an offering made by fire to Yahweh, even the soul who eats it shall be cut off from his people.
      26 You shall not eat any blood, whether it is of bird or of animal, in any of your dwellings.
      27 Whoever it is who eats any blood, that soul shall be cut off from his people.'"
      28 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
      29 "Speak to the children of Israel, saying, 'He who offers the sacrifice of his peace offerings to Yahweh shall bring his offering to Yahweh out of the sacrifice of his peace offerings.
      30 With his own hands he shall bring the offerings of Yahweh made by fire. He shall bring the fat with the breast, that the breast may be waved for a wave offering before Yahweh.
      31 The priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the breast shall be Aaron's and his sons'.
      32 The right thigh you shall give to the priest for a heave offering out of the sacrifices of your peace offerings.
      33 He among the sons of Aaron who offers the blood of the peace offerings, and the fat, shall have the right thigh for a portion.
      34 For the waved breast and the heaved thigh I have taken from the children of Israel out of the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons as their portion forever from the children of Israel.'"
      35 This is the anointing portion of Aaron, and the anointing portion of his sons, out of the offerings of Yahweh made by fire, in the day when he presented them to minister to Yahweh in the priest's office;
      36 which Yahweh commanded to be given them of the children of Israel, in the day that he anointed them. It is their portion forever throughout their generations.
      37 This is the law of the burnt offering, of the meal offering, and of the sin offering, and of the trespass offering, and of the consecration, and of the sacrifice of peace offerings;
      38 which Yahweh commanded Moses in Mount Sinai, in the day that he commanded the children of Israel to offer their offerings to Yahweh, in the wilderness of Sinai.

      Lévitique 9

      1 It happened on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel;
      2 and he said to Aaron, "Take a calf from the herd for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering, without blemish, and offer them before Yahweh.
      3 You shall speak to the children of Israel, saying, 'Take a male goat for a sin offering; and a calf and a lamb, both a year old, without blemish, for a burnt offering;
      4 and a bull and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice before Yahweh; and a meal offering mixed with oil: for today Yahweh appears to you.'"
      5 They brought what Moses commanded before the Tent of Meeting: and all the congregation drew near and stood before Yahweh.
      6 Moses said, "This is the thing which Yahweh commanded that you should do: and the glory of Yahweh shall appear to you."
      7 Moses said to Aaron, "Draw near to the altar, and offer your sin offering, and your burnt offering, and make atonement for yourself, and for the people; and offer the offering of the people, and make atonement for them; as Yahweh commanded."
      8 So Aaron drew near to the altar, and killed the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself.
      9 The sons of Aaron presented the blood to him; and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it on the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the base of the altar:
      10 but the fat, and the kidneys, and the cover from the liver of the sin offering, he burned upon the altar; as Yahweh commanded Moses.
      11 The flesh and the skin he burned with fire outside the camp.
      12 He killed the burnt offering; and Aaron's sons delivered the blood to him, and he sprinkled it around on the altar.
      13 They delivered the burnt offering to him, piece by piece, and the head: and he burned them upon the altar.
      14 He washed the innards and the legs, and burned them on the burnt offering on the altar.
      15 He presented the people's offering, and took the goat of the sin offering which was for the people, and killed it, and offered it for sin, like the first.
      16 He presented the burnt offering, and offered it according to the ordinance.
      17 He presented the meal offering, and filled his hand from there, and burned it upon the altar, besides the burnt offering of the morning.
      18 He also killed the bull and the ram, the sacrifice of peace offerings, which was for the people: and Aaron's sons delivered to him the blood, which he sprinkled around on the altar,
      19 and the fat of the bull and of the ram, the fat tail, and that which covers the innards, and the kidneys, and the cover of the liver:
      20 and they put the fat upon the breasts, and he burned the fat on the altar:
      21 and the breasts and the right thigh Aaron waved for a wave offering before Yahweh, as Moses commanded.
      22 Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people, and blessed them; and he came down from offering the sin offering, and the burnt offering, and the peace offerings.
      23 Moses and Aaron went into the Tent of Meeting, and came out, and blessed the people: and the glory of Yahweh appeared to all the people.
      24 There came forth fire from before Yahweh, and consumed the burnt offering and the fat upon the altar: and when all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces.

      Lévitique 10

      1 Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer, and put fire in it, and laid incense on it, and offered strange fire before Yahweh, which he had not commanded them.
      2 And fire came forth from before Yahweh, and devoured them, and they died before Yahweh.
      3 Then Moses said to Aaron, "This is what Yahweh spoke of, saying, 'I will show myself holy to those who come near me, and before all the people I will be glorified.'" Aaron held his peace.
      4 Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, "Draw near, carry your brothers from before the sanctuary out of the camp."
      5 So they drew near, and carried them in their coats out of the camp, as Moses had said.
      6 Moses said to Aaron, and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons, "Don't let the hair of your heads go loose, neither tear your clothes; that you don't die, and that he not be angry with all the congregation: but let your brothers, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which Yahweh has kindled.
      7 You shall not go out from the door of the Tent of Meeting, lest you die; for the anointing oil of Yahweh is on you." They did according to the word of Moses.
      8 Yahweh spoke to Aaron, saying,
      9 "Drink no wine nor strong drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the Tent of Meeting, that you don't die: it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations:
      10 and that you are to make a distinction between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean;
      11 and that you are to teach the children of Israel all the statutes which Yahweh has spoken to them by Moses."
      12 Moses spoke to Aaron, and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons who were left, "Take the meal offering that remains of the offerings of Yahweh made by fire, and eat it without yeast beside the altar; for it is most holy;
      13 and you shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your portion, and your sons' portion, of the offerings of Yahweh made by fire: for so I am commanded.
      14 The waved breast and the heaved thigh you shall eat in a clean place, you, and your sons, and your daughters with you: for they are given as your portion, and your sons' portion, out of the sacrifices of the peace offerings of the children of Israel.
      15 The heaved thigh and the waved breast they shall bring with the offerings made by fire of the fat, to wave it for a wave offering before Yahweh: and it shall be yours, and your sons' with you, as a portion forever; as Yahweh has commanded."
      16 Moses diligently inquired about the goat of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burned: and he was angry with Eleazar and with Ithamar, the sons of Aaron who were left, saying,
      17 "Why haven't you eaten the sin offering in the place of the sanctuary, since it is most holy, and he has given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before Yahweh?
      18 Behold, its blood was not brought into the inner part of the sanctuary: you certainly should have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded."
      19 Aaron spoke to Moses, "Behold, this day they have offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before Yahweh; and such things as these have happened to me: and if I had eaten the sin offering today, would it have been pleasing in the sight of Yahweh?"
      20 When Moses heard that, it was pleasing in his sight.

      Lévitique 11

      1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them,
      2 "Speak to the children of Israel, saying, 'These are the living things which you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth.
      3 Whatever parts the hoof, and is cloven-footed, and chews the cud among the animals, that you may eat.
      4 "'Nevertheless these you shall not eat of those that chew the cud, or of those who part the hoof: the camel, because he chews the cud but doesn't have a parted hoof, he is unclean to you.
      5 The coney, because he chews the cud but doesn't have a parted hoof, he is unclean to you.
      6 The hare, because she chews the cud but doesn't part the hoof, she is unclean to you.

      36 To subvert a man in his cause, the Lord doesn't approve.
      37 Who is he who says, and it comes to pass, when the Lord doesn't command it?

      40 Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to Yahweh.

      66 You will pursue them in anger, and destroy them from under the heavens of Yahweh.

      Lamentations 4

      1 How the gold has become dim! The most pure gold has changed! The stones of the sanctuary are poured out at the head of every street.
      2 The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, How are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!

      19 Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the sky: They chased us on the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness.
      20 The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Yahweh, was taken in their pits; Of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.
      21 Rejoice and be glad, daughter of Edom, that dwell in the land of Uz: The cup shall pass through to you also; you shall be drunken, and shall make yourself naked.
      22 The punishment of your iniquity is accomplished, daughter of Zion; he will no more carry you away into captivity: He will visit your iniquity, daughter of Edom; he will uncover your sins.
