(=ce qui est à droite). Fils d'Eliphaz et petit-fils d'Ésaü (Ge 36:11,15,42,1Ch 1:36,53), représentant une tribu du pays d'Édom ; son district avait une importance telle que son nom est devenu un synonyme poétique de celui d'Édom (Am 1:12, Hab 3:3, Jer 49:20, Ab 1:9).

L'un des premiers rois d'Édom était un Thémanite (Ge 36:34). Le district était situé dans la partie N. d'Édom (Eze 25:13), c-à-d, au Sud-E, de Moab. Ses habitants étaient réputés pour leur sagesse (Jer 49:7) ; un des amis de Job, Éliphaz, était aussi un Thémanite (Job 2:11 etc.).
