On désigne de ce nom un cours d'eau impétueux et rapide, pour le distinguer d'une rivière ou d'un ruisseau. La vitesse des eaux d'un torrent est due à ce qu'il dévale des pentes très fortes ; le plus souvent c'est un cours d'eau temporaire qui s'assèche l'été et ne coule qu'à la saison des pluies. Le lit du torrent est mal défini et varie avec les chutes d'eau qu'il doit canaliser. Dans les régions montagneuses comme la Palestine, les torrents sont très nombreux, grossissent beaucoup par les pluies et sont à sec l'été. Le Jourdain lui-même a un cours quelque peu torrentiel, bien qu'il ait toujours de l'eau.

Des montagnes de Judée descendent vers la mer Méditerranée le Bésor (1Sa 30:9 et suivant), le Kana (Jos 17:9), et du mont Guilboa le Kison (Jug 4:7 5:21,1Ro 18:40), enfin le Kérith où l'Éternel cacha Élie (1Ro 17:3) ; le Cédron, coulant jadis entre Jérusalem et le mont des Oliviers, se dirigeait ensuite vers la mer Morte (2Sa 15:23,1Ro 2:37 15:13 2Rois 23:6,12,2Ch 15:16 29:16).

De la chaîne montagneuse E. descendent vers le Jourdain ou la mer Morte : le Jabbok (Ge 32:22 No 21:24, De 3:16, Jos 12:2), l'Arnon (No 21:14 22:36, Jug 11:18,2Ro 10:33, Esa 16:2, Jer 48:20) et le Zéred (De 2:13, No 21:12). Pour le « torrent d'Egypte » (No 34:5, Jos 15:4, Eze 47:19 48:28 etc.), qu'il ne faut pas confondre avec le « fleuve d'Egypte », c-à-d, le Nil, voir Egypte (torrent d'), Fleuve.

Le mot hébreu qui désigne le torrent s'applique en même temps à sa vallée. On jette les choses malsaines au torrent, qui emporte tout (De 9:21,2Sa 17:13,2Ro 23:12,2Ch 29:16). Le torrent symbolise la rapide avance de l'ennemi (Jer 46:7 47:2, Esa 8:7 59:19), la perfidie (Job 6:15), l'inconstance (Job 22:16), l'abondance et la puissance (Ps 119:136, Pr 18:4, Esa 30:28, La 3:48, Da 11:22, Am 5:24, Mic 6:7, Mt 7:25).
