Ville assignée à Juda (Jos 15:31) et à Siméon (Jos 19:5,1Ch 4:30), mais en possession des Philistins au temps de David qui, exilé, la reçut en présent du roi Akis (1Sa 27:6) ; il y demeura jusqu'à la mort de Saül (1Sa 30:1,14,26,2Sa 1:1 4:10,1Ch 12:20).

La ville est encore nommée après l'exil (Ne 11:28). Son identification avec Zouheilikâ, à 18 km. au Sud-E, de Gaza, est fort incertaine.
