1. Peine infligée à un offenseur pour la satisfaction de l'offensé ; représailles. Ainsi : comprise, la vengeance n'est jamais équitable (cf. Ge 4:23 34:27 et suivants, Est 8:13, Ps 137:7-9), et la Bible la défend : « Tu ne te vengeras point » (Le 19:18, Mt 5:38 et suivants, Ro 12:17 et suivant).

2. Châtiment auquel est soumis quiconque a fait le mal. Ici la vengeance se confond avec la rétribution ; mais Dieu se réserve de l'exercer : « A moi la vengeance et la rétribution, dit le Seigneur » (Ro 12:19, cf. De 32:35, Heb 10:30 etc.).

--L'A. T, nous parle fréquemment de. la vengeance que Dieu exerce contre ses ennemis I (De 32:41 et suivants, Esa 59:18) et contre les ennemis de son peuple (Esa 35:4, No 31:3, Jug 11:36, Jer 46:10 51:6 et suivants, Na 1:2 etc.). La vengeance divine s'appelle parfois le Jour de Jéhovah. (Joe 2:31, Am 5:18,20, Ab 15 ; voir Jour de l'Éternel)

--Le N.T. annonce le jour où Dieu vengera ses élus (Lu 18:7,21:22). Mais tandis que les justes de l'ancienne alliance appellent la vengeance divine contre leurs ennemis, les justifiés de la nouvelle sont appelés, à l'exemple de leur Sauveur (Lu 23:24) et sur son ordre (Mt 5:43 et suivants), à décliner toute vengeance et à s'en remettre à Dieu qui seul juge justement (1Pi 2:23). Pardonnés, ils doivent pardonner à leur tour (Mt 6:12, Eph 4:32). Voir Talion, Rétribution, et l'art, suivant.
