Ces paroles se rapportent au nom de Père, qui termine le verset Ephésiens 3.14. (Le texte reçu ajoute : "de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ," contre les autorités les plus décisives.)

L'apôtre fait un rapprochement de mots entre ce nom de Père (pater), et le mot de famille (patria), employé ailleurs dans le sens de tribu ou de descendance d'un père. (Luc 2.4 ; Actes 3.25) C'est du Père céleste que toute famille sur la terre et dans le ciel tire son nom (Grec : "est nommée d'après lui"), de même que les familles des hommes portent le nom de leur père.

L'apôtre désigne par ce terme des familles spirituelles, celle des anges, celle des Israélites fidèles, celle des Gentils appelés à la foi. Dieu s'attribue ce beau titre de Père, non seulement comme Créateur, mais surtout parce que ses vrais enfants sont "nés de lui," (Jean 1.12,13) par une naissance nouvelle, et qu'il a pour eux l'amour du plus tendre père.

Dans la pensée de l'apôtre, ce titre s'applique surtout à ses lecteurs convertis du paganisme, et doit leur inspirer le sentiment que Dieu ne fait point d'acception de personne à leur détriment ; c'est la pensée qui reparaît si souvent dans toute notre épître. (Voy. surtout Ephésiens 2.18,19)

- C'est devant ce Père que l'apôtre fléchit les genoux, c'est-à-dire prie pour ses frères, (Ephésiens 3.16-19) avec autant d'humilité que d'amour, faisant preuve du véritable esprit de prière.
