Cette bonne œuvre par excellence, l'œuvre de la foi, de la conversion, du salut, que Paul vient d'indiquer comme une communion à l'Evangile, il en attribue ici le commencement, la continuation et la fin à Dieu, ce qui est conforme à tous les enseignements de l'Evangile sur ce grand sujet.

C'est parce que cette œuvre est l'œuvre de Dieu que l'apôtre parle avec tant d'assurance de son achèvement jusqu'au jour de Jésus-Christ. (verset 10, note.)

- Quelques interprètes entendent par la "communion ou participation à l'Evangile" (verset 5) uniquement la part active qu'ont prise les Philippiens à le propager, et par la bonne œuvre, cette coopération même. Dans l'un et l'autre cas, c'est une explication très incomplète et superficielle des paroles de l'apôtre.
