L'élévation suprême de Jésus-Christ a été, dans un sens spécial, la conséquence, la récompense de son dévouement ; c'est ce que l'apôtre indique clairement par cette particule : c'est pourquoi. (verset 9) Cette élévation, ce n'est pas la restitution de la nature divine, - Christ n'y avait jamais renoncé, - mais la restitution de la gloire éternelle dont il s'était dépouillé volontairement. (Comparer Luc 24.26 ; Jean 17.5 ; Ephésiens 1.20-22 ; Hébreux 2.9)

"Il ne reçoit pas ce qu'il avait auparavant, mais il reçoit comme homme ce qu'il avait comme Dieu." Théodoret.

C'est par là même que se trouve réalisée en Jésus cette loi universelle du monde moral : "Quiconque s'abaisse sera élevé," (Matthieu 23.12 ; Luc 14.11 ; 1Pierre 5.6) pensée qui correspond parfaitement au but de l'exhortation de l'apôtre. (verset 5)

Rentré au sein de sa gloire en y élevant notre humanité dans sa personne, Jésus reçoit le nom qui est au-dessus de tout nom. (Le texte reçu dit à tort un nom.) Lequel ? Les uns répondent : le nom de , (verset 11) de souverain Dominateur de ce règne qu'il vient de fonder par son dévouement, dignité que toute langue doit confesser avec adoration. Les autres disent : le nom de JÉSUS, (verset 10) qui signifie Sauveur, et que tous ses rachetés prononceront à jamais avec reconnaissance et avec amour.

Quoi qu'il en soit, il faut remarquer que l'apôtre emploie à dessein, d'abord le nom humain de JESUS, devant qui tout genou doit fléchir, afin de dire clairement que c'est avec son humanité qu'il a été glorifié ; puis, il attribue le titre souverain de , désigné sous son double nom.

C'est ce qui doit délier toute langue pour le confesser, et faire fléchir tout genou afin qu'il soit adoré, au ciel, sur la terre et sous la terre, dans l'univers tout entier et par toutes les créatures qui le remplissent. Et cela aura lieu, soit volontairement et par amour, soit, un jour, par la crainte de sa toute-puissance et par la proclamation de sa justice.

Cette dernière pensée domine même dans le passage d'Esaïe (Esaïe 45.23,24) que cite l'apôtre. Dans le prophète, c'est Jéhova qui parle, et Paul, dans la conviction que Christ est "égal à Dieu," n'hésite pas à lui attribuer la souveraine puissance et l'adoration que Jéhova réclamait pour lui-même. Mais la confession que Jésus-Christ est le Seigneur est à la gloire de Dieu le Père, parce que Dieu, ses perfections, tout son Etre, a été manifesté en Christ et par son œuvre. ()

- Parvenir là où est Jésus, telle est l'espérance du chrétien ; () mais pour y arriver, il n'y a qu'un chemin, celui du renoncement et des humiliations, que Jésus-Christ a suivi ; voilà toute la pensée de Paul et le grand motif qu'il invoque à l'appui de son exhortation.
