Ces remarquables paroles, qui expriment la conséquence morale de l'exemple de Jésus-Christ cité par l'apôtre (ainsi), renferment deux pensées qui, au premier abord, paraissent être en contradiction l'une avec l'autre : d'une part, la liberté de l'homme, sa responsabilité, son action pour le salut ; de l'autre, son absolue dépendance de Dieu et de l'œuvre de la grâce.

Pourquoi devonsnous opérer notre salut avec crainte et tremblement ? parce que (car) Dieu agit avec efficace lui-même en nous pour produire et le vouloir et l'action efficace (tel est le sens du grec.)

Comment s'accordent ces deux principes ? Il faut remarquer d'abord que pour que nous puissions opérer notre salut, il faut que toute l'œuvre de Christ pour nous ait précédé, et que nous avons seulement à travailler à nous approprier le salut accompli par Christ.

Il faut remarquer encore que la crainte et le tremblement ne sont plus une frayeur servile du jugement, mais la crainte filiale d'offenser un Père réconcilié, ou de retomber dans le péché par la négligence des moyens de grâce. (Voir ces mêmes termes, dans des applications différentes, 1Corinthiens 2.3 ; 2Corinthiens 7.15 ; Ephésiens 6.5)

Or, il est parfaitement vrai, quelque contradictoire que cela paraisse, et il est conforme à l'expérience chrétienne que, pour toute conscience sérieuse, le plus puissant motif de vigilance et d'action, c'est la pensée que la grâce opère tout en elle. Les premiers commencements de la conversion, comme la persévérance finale ; la première pensée d'un retour à Dieu, le premier mouvement de repentance, de foi, d'amour, comme les plus grands progrès dans la sanctification, tout est l'œuvre de la grâce en nous.

Mais cette grâce agit dans le cœur, réveille, dirige, fortifie et sanctifie la volonté ; elle produit non seulement le vouloir et l'action, mais nous donne le vif sentiment que l'inaction serait une coupable résistance, un criminel mépris de tant d'amour. Elle suscite, dans une âme ainsi remise en contact avec Dieu, la crainte et le tremblement dont parle Paul. Elle excite ce sentiment de notre responsabilité, qui nous pousse à travailler à notre salut avec énergie. Ainsi la doctrine évangélique, bien comprise, attribue à Dieu et à sa grâce la gloire du salut de l'homme, et produit dans ce dernier, à la fois la plus profonde humilité, et le zèle le plus ardent pour parvenir au but que Dieu a placé devant lui.
