Philippiens 3.1

Au reste, mes frères, réjouissez-vous dans le Seigneur : vous écrire les mêmes choses n'est pas pénible pour moi, et c'est votre sûreté.

L'apôtre avertit les Philippiens contre les faux docteurs du judaïsme ; il renonce à ses privilèges antérieurs. (Philippiens 3:1-11)
Il exprime un fervent désir d'être en Christ ; il engage les Philippiens à tendre vers la perfection ; il recommande son propre exemple aux autres croyants. (Philippiens 3:12-21)

Les véritables chrétiens se réjouissent en Jésus-Christ !

Le prophète Ésaïe désigne les faux prophètes comme des « chiens muets », Esa 56:10 ; l'apôtre semble se référer à ce verset : il utilise aussi le terme de « chiens », à cause de l’hypocrisie de ces personnes, à l’égard des véritables serviteurs de l'Évangile, « aboyant » sur eux et les mordant. Ces faux prophètes recommandaient des œuvres humaines, en opposition à la foi en Christ ; Paul les appelle aussi de « mauvais ouvriers » et encore de « faux circoncis » car ils dégradent l'Église de Christ, la mettant littéralement en pièces.

Les œuvres inhérentes à la piété ne doivent avoir aucun but intéressé, mais doivent être exécutées de tout cœur ; nous devons adorer Dieu dans la force et la grâce de l'Esprit divin.

Les enfants de Dieu se réjouissent prioritairement en Jésus-Christ, pour goûter ensuite aux plaisirs convenables de ce monde. Nous devons nous garder de la compagnie de ceux qui s'opposent à la doctrine du salut gratuit, ou qui s’en moquent. Si l'apôtre avait voulu se glorifier et placer sa confiance dans la chair, il aurait eu le même comportement que tout homme. Mais ce qu'il considérait au départ comme un gain, en tant que Pharisien, devenait désormais pour lui une véritable perte, devant le Seigneur !

L'apôtre n’a pas laisser les Philippiens errer spirituellement, ni entreprendre que ce quoi en vue d’essayer de trouver le salut éternel pour leur âme. Il considérait toutes les vanités de ce monde comme une perte, en comparaison avec la connaissance de Christ, par la foi en Sa personne et Son salut.

Paul cite tous les plaisirs et les privilèges de ce monde, qui tendent à prendre place en son cœur, chassant ainsi la présence de Christ ; même si les gains matériels peuvent prétendre à un quelconque mérite, ils ne sont en fait pour l’apôtre, que des pertes.

On pourrait avancer : il est facile de s’exprimer ainsi, mais que faire, au moment de l'épreuve ? Paul avait souffert la perte de tous ses avantages, pour obtenir le privilège d'être chrétien. Il ne considérait pas seulement ses anciens avantages comme une perte, mais comme les déchets les plus vils, bons à être jetés aux chiens ; ils étaient sans valeur, comparés à Christ, mais aussi, méprisables au plus haut degré.

La véritable connaissance de Christ transforme les hommes, leurs jugements et leur manière de vivre, elle les transforme pour les faire naître de nouveau. Le croyant préfère Christ à tout autre attrait : il sait qu'il est, de loin, préférable de « posséder » Christ et Sa Parole, plutôt que toutes les vaines richesses du monde.

Puissions-nous discerner ce qui motivait l'apôtre : Christ et le ciel ! Sans la Justice divine nous sommes incapables de paraître devant le Seigneur car nous sommes coupables ; cependant, nous disposons d’une Justice, en Jésus-Christ, elle est complète et parfaite !

Nul ne peut recevoir de bienfaits célestes s'il n'a confiance qu'en lui-même. La foi dans le sang de Christ est en fait le seul moyen qui puisse nous faire bénéficier des bienfaits du salut. Quand nous « mourons au péché », nous sommes rendus conformes à la mort de Christ, Lui-même étant mort pour nos iniquités ; le monde nous est « crucifié », et nous au monde, par la croix de Christ.

L'apôtre désirait accomplir n’importe quoi, même dans la souffrance, pour atteindre la résurrection glorieuse des saints. Cet espoir et cette perspective l'ont « porté » à travers toutes les difficultés dans son ministère. Il n'a pas espéré atteindre ce but par son propre mérite ni sa justice, mais à travers ceux de Jésus-Christ !
