Seulement, soyons conséquents avec les convictions que nous partageons dès à présent, que les vérités acquises dirigent notre marche et, sur tous les points où nous sommes d’accord, avançons ensemble.

"La même pensée" (verset 15) dont tous les chrétiens doivent être animés, c'est le centre même, l'âme de la vie nouvelle en Christ.

Si un chrétien marche selon cette ligne de conduite, dans cet esprit, il se trouve sous la direction certaine de Dieu, sous la discipline de son Saint-Esprit.

Mais sur divers points secondaires de doctrine ou de conduite, il peut y avoir, entre ceux qui suivent cette voie, des différences ; à plus d'un égard ils peuvent penser autrement, tout en étant sur le même fondement ; cela est dans la nature des choses et inséparable de la liberté évangélique ; l'apôtre l'admet sans hésiter.

Mais il est tout aussi convaincu que, si des chrétiens sont réellement sur "le seul fondement que l'on puisse poser," conduits par le même Esprit de Dieu, ce qui manque à leur connaissance ou à leurs convictions leur sera révélé par cet Esprit, qui les rapprochera toujours plus de l'unité en toutes choses. (verset 15)

En attendant, ils doivent user de support, de charité, respecter la liberté les uns des autres, et surtout conserver l'unité dans tout "ce à quoi ils sont parvenus." (Trad. littér.) Paul en donne ici lui-même un mémorable exemple. Autant il se montre absolu lorsqu'il s'agit de la vérité qui constitue l'essence même de l'Evangile, autant il est large et éloigné de vouloir étouffer les convictions individuelles sous le poids de son autorité apostolique, quand il a affaire à des opinions secondaires et sincères, qui ne différent le plus souvent que par suite d'une connaissance imparfaite. (Comparer Romains 14.1 ; Ephésiens 1.17 ; 1Jean 2.20,27)

- Le texte reçu donne ainsi ce verset : "cependant, ce à quoi nous sommes parvenus, marcher selon une même règle, penser la même chose." Les mots soulignés ne sont pas authentiques ; ils ont été ajoutés dans l'intention de rendre plus claire la pensée de l'apôtre.
