Ce sont les mêmes hommes que l'apôtre désigne par ces trois noms.

Le premier les marque comme impurs dans leur caractère et leurs motifs (en Orient, le chien est toujours le symbole de l'impureté : Matthieu 7.6 ; Apocalypse 22.15) ; le second montre en eux des hommes qui se donnaient à eux-mêmes la mission de travailler dans l'Eglise (comparez 2Corinthiens 11.13 ; et ci-dessus Philippiens 1.14,15) ; le troisième les désigne comme appartenant au parti des judaïsants, qui faisaient de la circoncision une condition indispensable au salut.

L'apôtre, par un jeu de mots qui renferme une vive ironie, transforme cette circoncision en une simple incision ou mutilation (tel est le sens du mot traduit par fausse circoncision), et il fait sentir ainsi que c'est à cela, en effet, que se réduit cette cérémonie religieuse, dès le moment qu'on attache tant d'importance à l'acte extérieur, matériel, en oubliant que la circoncision n'a de valeur que comme signe de la purification du cœur et de la vie. (Comparer Philippiens 3.3,Romains 2.28,29)

Combien un tel avertissement est encore applicable à tous les genres de formalisme !
