Ces privilèges, dans l'intention de Dieu, étaient certainement d'une grande valeur (un gain) ; mais comme Paul en avait abusé par orgueil, il les considère maintenant comme une véritable perte : ce qui ne veut pas dire seulement qu'il les a perdus, qu'il y a renoncé, mais qu'ils lui étaient vraiment devenus nuisibles. (Comparer Jean 9.41 note.)

C'est dans ce sens qu'un Père de l'Eglise a pu émettre l'idée paradoxale que "les bonnes œuvres sont nuisibles au salut," ce qui est vrai si ces œuvres empêchent l'homme de chercher son salut uniquement en Jésus-Christ.
