Qui était ce compagnon d'œuvre de l'apôtre ? On ne peut répondre à cette question que par des conjectures. L'apôtre, en recommandant Evodie et Syntyche à ce disciple (oui, toi aussi est la vraie leçon ici rétablie), pense qu'il pourra contribuer à établir entre elles l'union à laquelle il les exhorte.

S'agit-il de Clément, plus tard évêque de Rome, dont on a une lettre aux Corinthiens ? Les Pères de l'Eglise l'ont admis ; la chose est incertaine.

Image empruntée à l'usage d'inscrire dans un livre tous les citoyens d'une cité (Psaumes 69.29 ; Luc 2.1-3 ; et, dans ce sens spirituel, Luc 10.20) ; expression frappante de l'assurance de l'apôtre quant au salut éternel de ceux dont il parle.
