      32 But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.
      33 Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies be consumed in the wilderness.
      34 After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.'
      35 I, Yahweh, have spoken, surely this will I do to all this evil congregation, who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die."
      36 The men, whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land,
      37 even those men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before Yahweh.
      38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men who went to spy out the land.
      39 Moses told these words to all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
      40 They rose up early in the morning, and went up to the top of the mountain, saying, "Behold, we are here, and will go up to the place which Yahweh has promised: for we have sinned."
      41 Moses said, "Why now do you disobey the commandment of Yahweh, since it shall not prosper?
      42 Don't go up, for Yahweh isn't among you; that you not be struck down before your enemies.
      43 For there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and you shall fall by the sword: because you are turned back from following Yahweh, therefore Yahweh will not be with you."
      44 But they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and Moses, didn't depart out of the camp.
      45 Then the Amalekite came down, and the Canaanite who lived in that mountain, and struck them and beat them down, even to Hormah.

      1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
      2 "Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, 'When you have come into the land of your habitations, which I give to you,
      3 and will make an offering by fire to Yahweh, a burnt offering, or a sacrifice, to accomplish a vow, or as a freewill offering, or in your set feasts, to make a pleasant aroma to Yahweh, of the herd, or of the flock;
      4 then he who offers his offering shall offer to Yahweh a meal offering of a tenth part of an ephah of fine flour mixed with the fourth part of a hin of oil:
      5 and wine for the drink offering, the fourth part of a hin, you shall prepare with the burnt offering, or for the sacrifice, for each lamb.
      6 "'Or for a ram, you shall prepare for a meal offering two tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour mixed with the third part of a hin of oil:
      7 and for the drink offering you shall offer the third part of a hin of wine, of a pleasant aroma to Yahweh.
      8 When you prepare a bull for a burnt offering, or for a sacrifice, to accomplish a vow, or for peace offerings to Yahweh;
      9 then shall he offer with the bull a meal offering of three tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour mixed with half a hin of oil:
      10 and you shall offer for the drink offering half a hin of wine, for an offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to Yahweh.
      11 Thus shall it be done for each bull, or for each ram, or for each of the male lambs, or of the young goats.
      12 According to the number that you shall prepare, so you shall do to everyone according to their number.
      13 "'All who are native-born shall do these things in this way, in offering an offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to Yahweh.
      14 If a stranger lives as a foreigner with you, or whoever may be among you throughout your generations, and will offer an offering made by fire, of a pleasant aroma to Yahweh; as you do, so he shall do.
      15 For the assembly, there shall be one statute for you, and for the stranger who lives as a foreigner, a statute forever throughout your generations: as you are, so shall the foreigner be before Yahweh.
      16 One law and one ordinance shall be for you, and for the stranger who lives as a foreigner with you.'"
      17 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
      18 "Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, 'When you come into the land where I bring you,
      19 then it shall be that when you eat of the bread of the land, you shall offer up a wave offering to Yahweh.
      20 Of the first of your dough you shall offer up a cake for a wave offering: as the wave offering of the threshing floor, so you shall heave it.
      21 Of the first of your dough you shall give to Yahweh a wave offering throughout your generations.
      22 "'When you shall err, and not observe all these commandments, which Yahweh has spoken to Moses,
      23 even all that Yahweh has commanded you by Moses, from the day that Yahweh gave commandment, and onward throughout your generations;
      24 then it shall be, if it be done unwittingly, without the knowledge of the congregation, that all the congregation shall offer one young bull for a burnt offering, for a pleasant aroma to Yahweh, with the meal offering of it, and the drink offering of it, according to the ordinance, and one male goat for a sin offering.
      25 The priest shall make atonement for all the congregation of the children of Israel, and they shall be forgiven; for it was an error, and they have brought their offering, an offering made by fire to Yahweh, and their sin offering before Yahweh, for their error:
      26 and all the congregation of the children of Israel shall be forgiven, and the stranger who lives as a foreigner among them; for in respect of all the people it was done unwittingly.
      27 "'If one person sins unwittingly, then he shall offer a female goat a year old for a sin offering.
      28 The priest shall make atonement for the soul who errs, when he sins unwittingly, before Yahweh, to make atonement for him; and he shall be forgiven.
      29 You shall have one law for him who does anything unwittingly, for him who is native-born among the children of Israel, and for the stranger who lives as a foreigner among them.
      30 "'But the soul who does anything with a high hand, whether he is native-born or a foreigner, the same blasphemes Yahweh; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
      31 Because he has despised the word of Yahweh, and has broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be on him.'"
      32 While the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day.
      33 Those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the congregation.
      34 They put him in custody, because it had not been declared what should be done to him.
      35 Yahweh said to Moses, "The man shall surely be put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside of the camp."
      36 All the congregation brought him outside of the camp, and stoned him to death with stones; as Yahweh commanded Moses.
      37 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
      38 "Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them that they should make themselves fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put on the fringe of each border a cord of blue:
      39 and it shall be to you for a fringe , that you may look on it, and remember all the commandments of Yahweh, and do them; and that you not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you use to play the prostitute;
      40 that you may remember and do all my commandments, and be holy to your God.
      41 I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am Yahweh your God."

      Nombres 16

      1 Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men:
      2 and they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown;
      3 and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said to them, "You take too much on yourself, since all the congregation are holy, everyone of them, and Yahweh is among them: why then lift yourselves up above the assembly of Yahweh?"
      4 When Moses heard it, he fell on his face:
      5 and he spoke to Korah and to all his company, saying, "In the morning Yahweh will show who are his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near to him: even him whom he shall choose he will cause to come near to him.
      6 Do this: take censers, Korah, and all his company;
      7 and put fire in them, and put incense on them before Yahweh tomorrow: and it shall be that the man whom Yahweh chooses, he shall be holy. You have gone too far, you sons of Levi!"
      8 Moses said to Korah, "Hear now, you sons of Levi!
      9 Is it a small thing to you, that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of Yahweh, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them;
      10 and that he has brought you near, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you? and do you seek the priesthood also?
      11 Therefore you and all your company are gathered together against Yahweh: and Aaron, what is he that you murmur against him?"
      12 Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said, "We won't come up:
      13 is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but you must also make yourself a prince over us?
      14 Moreover you haven't brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: will you put out the eyes of these men? We won't come up."
      15 Moses was very angry, and said to Yahweh, "Don't respect their offering: I have not taken one donkey from them, neither have I hurt one of them."
      16 Moses said to Korah, "You and all your company go before Yahweh, you, and they, and Aaron, tomorrow:
      17 and each man take his censer, and put incense on them, and each man bring before Yahweh his censer, two hundred fifty censers; you also, and Aaron, each his censer."
      18 They each took his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood at the door of the Tent of Meeting with Moses and Aaron.
      19 Korah assembled all the congregation against them to the door of the Tent of Meeting: and the glory of Yahweh appeared to all the congregation.
      20 Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,
      21 "Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment!"
      22 They fell on their faces, and said, "God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will you be angry with all the congregation?"
      23 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
      24 "Speak to the congregation, saying, 'Get away from around the tent of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram!'"
      25 Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.
      26 He spoke to the congregation, saying, "Depart, please, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins!"
      27 So they went away from the tent of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.
      28 Moses said, "Hereby you shall know that Yahweh has sent me to do all these works; for they are not from my own mind.
      29 If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then Yahweh hasn't sent me.
      30 But if Yahweh make a new thing, and the ground open its mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain to them, and they go down alive into Sheol ; then you shall understand that these men have despised Yahweh."
      31 It happened, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground split apart that was under them;
      32 and the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men who appertained to Korah, and all their goods.
      33 So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into Sheol : and the earth closed on them, and they perished from among the assembly.
      34 All Israel that were around them fled at their cry; for they said, "Lest the earth swallow us up!"
      35 Fire came forth from Yahweh, and devoured the two hundred fifty men who offered the incense.
      36 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
      37 "Speak to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter the fire yonder; for they are holy,
      38 even the censers of these sinners against their own lives; and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before Yahweh; therefore they are holy; and they shall be a sign to the children of Israel."
      39 Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers, which those who were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,
      40 to be a memorial to the children of Israel, to the end that no stranger, who isn't of the seed of Aaron, comes near to burn incense before Yahweh; that he not be as Korah, and as his company: as Yahweh spoke to him by Moses.
      41 But on the next day all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, "You have killed Yahweh's people!"
      42 It happened, when the congregation was assembled against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the Tent of Meeting: and behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of Yahweh appeared.
      43 Moses and Aaron came to the front of the Tent of Meeting.
      44 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
      45 "Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment!" They fell on their faces.
      46 Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer, and put fire from off the altar in it, and lay incense on it, and carry it quickly to the congregation, and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone out from Yahweh! The plague has begun."
      47 Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and behold, the plague has begun among the people: and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people.
      48 He stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.
      49 Now those who died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides those who died about the matter of Korah.
      50 Aaron returned to Moses to the door of the Tent of Meeting: and the plague was stayed.

      Nombres 17

      1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
      2 "Speak to the children of Israel, and take of them rods, one for each fathers' house, of all their princes according to their fathers' houses, twelve rods: write every man's name on his rod.
      3 You shall write Aaron's name on the rod of Levi; for there shall be one rod for each head of their fathers' houses.
      4 You shall lay them up in the Tent of Meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you.
      5 It shall happen, that the rod of the man whom I shall choose shall bud: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you."
      6 Moses spoke to the children of Israel; and all their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathers' houses, even twelve rods: and the rod of Aaron was among their rods.
      7 Moses laid up the rods before Yahweh in the tent of the testimony.
      8 It happened on the next day, that Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and put forth buds, and produced blossoms, and bore ripe almonds.
      9 Moses brought out all the rods from before Yahweh to all the children of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod.
      10 Yahweh said to Moses, "Put back the rod of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the children of rebellion; that you may make an end of their murmurings against me, that they not die."
      11 Moses did so. As Yahweh commanded him, so he did.
      12 The children of Israel spoke to Moses, saying, "Behold, we perish! We are undone! We are all undone!
      13 Everyone who comes near, who comes near to the tabernacle of Yahweh, dies! Will we all perish?"

      32 Quant à vous, vos cadavres tomberont dans le désert
      33 où vos fils seront nomades pendant quarante ans. Ils supporteront ainsi les conséquences de votre infidélité à mon égard jusqu’à ce que le désert ait englouti tous vos cadavres.
      34 Vous avez mis quarante jours à reconnaître le pays, eh bien, vous porterez les conséquences de vos fautes durant quarante ans : une année pour chaque jour. Ainsi vous saurez ce qu’il en coûte de m’abandonner !
      35 Moi, l’Eternel, j’ai parlé ! Oui, c’est ainsi que je traiterai cette communauté rebelle qui s’est liguée contre moi ! Ils disparaîtront dans ce désert ; c’est là qu’ils mourront. »
      36 Les hommes que Moïse avait envoyés reconnaître le pays et qui, à leur retour, avaient entraîné toute l’assemblée à se plaindre contre lui en décriant le pays,
      37 ces hommes qui avaient débité de mauvais propos contre le pays moururent frappés d’une mort brutale devant l’Eternel.
      38 Des hommes qui étaient allés prospecter le pays, seuls Josué, fils de Noun, et Caleb, fils de Yephounné, restèrent en vie.
      39 Quand Moïse rapporta ces paroles aux Israélites, le peuple se livra à de grandes lamentations.
      40 Le lendemain, ils se levèrent de bon matin et montèrent vers les hauteurs de la région montagneuse en disant : —Nous avons péché ; mais à présent nous allons marcher vers le lieu dont l’Eternel a parlé.
      41 Moïse leur déclara : —Pourquoi passez-vous outre à ce qu’a dit l’Eternel ? Vous allez au devant d’un échec !
      42 N’y allez pas, car l’Eternel n’est pas au milieu de vous, n’allez donc pas vous faire battre par vos ennemis !
      43 Car vous trouverez les Amalécites et les Cananéens sur votre chemin, et vous vous ferez massacrer. Comme vous vous êtes détournés de l’Eternel, il ne sera pas avec vous.
      44 Dans leur présomption, ils montèrent quand même vers les hauteurs de la région montagneuse ; mais ni le *coffre de l’alliance de l’Eternel ni Moïse ne quittèrent le camp.
      45 Les Amalécites et les Cananéens qui demeuraient sur les montagnes descendirent, les battirent et les écrasèrent en les poursuivant jusqu’à Horma.

      Nombres 15

      1 L’Eternel s’adressa à Moïse en ces termes :
      2 —Parle aux Israélites, et dis-leur : Lorsque vous serez arrivés dans le pays que je vais vous donner pour que vous y fassiez votre demeure,
      3 et que vous voudrez m’offrir un sacrifice de gros ou de petit bétail consumé par le feu dont l’odeur apaisera l’Eternel — que ce soit un *holocauste ou un sacrifice destiné à accomplir un *vœu, un sacrifice volontaire, ou encore un sacrifice offert à l’occasion de l’une de vos fêtes religieuses —
      4 vous y joindrez une offrande de trois kilogrammes de fleur de farine pétrie avec deux litres d’huile
      5 et une libation de deux litres de vin. Cette offrande de céréales et cette libation accompagneront chaque agneau offert en holocauste ou en sacrifice.
      6 Pour un bélier, vous ferez une offrande de six kilogrammes de fleur de farine pétrie avec deux litres et demi d’huile d’olive
      7 et une libation de deux litres et demi de vin. L’odeur de ces sacrifices que tu offriras ainsi apaisera l’Eternel.
      8 Si c’est un veau que vous offrez à l’Eternel soit en *holocauste, soit comme sacrifice destiné à accomplir un *vœu, soit comme sacrifice de communion,
      9 vous y adjoindrez une offrande de neuf kilogrammes de fleur de farine pétrie avec quatre litres d’huile
      10 et une libation de quatre litres de vin. L’odeur de ces sacrifices consumés par le feu apaisera l’Eternel.
      11 Chaque bœuf, chaque bélier, chaque agneau ou chevreau sera offert de cette manière.
      12 Quel que soit le nombre des victimes que vous offrirez, vous accompagnerez chacune d’elles de l’offrande de céréales et de la libation correspondantes.
      13 L’Israélite de naissance suivra ces prescriptions pour offrir les sacrifices consumés par le feu dont l’odeur apaise l’Eternel.
      14 Et l’étranger séjournant parmi vous ou établi depuis plusieurs générations au milieu de vous procédera de la même manière que vous pour offrir un sacrifice consumé par le feu dont l’odeur apaise l’Eternel.
      15 La communauté aura un seul et même rituel, qui s’appliquera aux uns comme aux autres. Ce sera un rituel immuable pour les générations à venir, et il en sera de même pour vous et pour l’immigré, devant l’Eternel.
      16 Une même loi et une même ordonnance vous régiront, vous et l’étranger qui réside parmi vous.
      17 L’Eternel s’adressa à Moïse en ces termes :
      18 —Dis aux Israélites : Lorsque vous serez arrivés au pays vers lequel je vous conduis,
      19 et que vous mangerez du pain du pays, vous en prélèverez une offrande pour l’Eternel.
      20 Quand vous cuirez votre pain, vous prélèverez la première miche que vous m’offrirez comme ce qu’on prélève sur la nouvelle récolte de blé.
      21 Vous ferez ainsi une offrande à l’Eternel des premiers produits de vos fournées, de génération en génération.
      22 —Supposons que vous négligiez par inadvertance d’obéir à l’un de ces commandements que j’ai communiqués à Moïse,
      23 à l’un de ces ordres que je vous ai transmis par son intermédiaire, à partir du jour où je les ai prescrits et par la suite, de génération en génération.
      24 Si donc cette faute a été commise par inadvertance et qu’elle a échappé à la communauté, toute la communauté offrira un jeune taureau comme holocauste dont l’odeur apaisera l’Eternel — avec l’offrande et la libation prescrites — ainsi qu’un bouc en sacrifice pour le péché.
      25 Le prêtre fera le rite d’*expiation pour toute la communauté des Israélites, et il leur sera pardonné, puisque c’est une faute commise par mégarde. Quand ils auront apporté leur sacrifice, un sacrifice consumé par le feu pour l’Eternel, et présenté leur sacrifice pour le péché devant moi, pour leur faute commise par inadvertance,
      26 il sera pardonné à toute la communauté des Israélites et à l’immigré installé au milieu d’eux, car c’est par inadvertance que tout le peuple aura commis cette faute.
      27 Si c’est une seule personne qui a commis une faute par inadvertance, elle offrira un chevreau dans sa première année en sacrifice pour le péché.
      28 Le prêtre accomplira devant l’Eternel le rite d’expiation pour la personne qui a commis une faute par inadvertance. Une fois que le rite d’expiation sera accompli pour elle, il lui sera pardonné.
      29 Une seule et même loi régira les Israélites nés dans le pays qui commettent une faute par inadvertance et les immigrés installés parmi eux.
      30 Mais si quelqu’un commet délibérément une faute — qu’il soit autochtone ou immigré — il fait injure à l’Eternel et il sera retranché du milieu de son peuple.
      31 Pour avoir méprisé la parole de l’Eternel et violé son commandement, il doit être retranché car il porte la responsabilité de sa faute.
      32 Pendant leur séjour au désert, les Israélites trouvèrent un homme qui ramassait du bois le jour du sabbat.
      33 Ceux qui l’avaient surpris ainsi l’amenèrent devant Moïse, Aaron et toute la communauté.
      34 Ils le tinrent sous bonne garde, car rien n’avait encore été prescrit quant à la peine qu’il fallait lui infliger.
      35 L’Eternel dit à Moïse : —Cet homme doit être puni de mort, toute la communauté l’exécutera à coups de pierres à l’extérieur du camp.
      36 Alors toute la communauté le fit sortir du camp et le lapida jusqu’à ce que mort s’ensuive comme l’Eternel l’avait ordonné à Moïse.
      37 L’Eternel dit à Moïse :
      38 —Parle aux Israélites pour leur dire de se faire, eux et tous leurs descendants, des franges sur les bords de leurs vêtements en passant dans chacune un cordon de pourpre violette.
      39 Ainsi, lorsque vous verrez ces franges, vous penserez à tous les commandements de l’Eternel pour les appliquer et vous ne vous égarerez pas en suivant les désirs de votre cœur et de vos yeux qui vous incitent à l’infidélité.
      40 Ainsi vous vous souviendrez de tous mes commandements, vous y obéirez, et vous serez saints pour votre Dieu.
      41 Je suis l’Eternel, votre Dieu, qui vous ai fait sortir d’Egypte pour être votre Dieu. Oui, je suis l’Eternel, votre Dieu.

      1 Qoré, un lévite, fils de Yitsehar, de la famille des Qehatites, conspira avec trois Rubénites : Datan, Abirâm, fils d’Eliab, et On, fils de Péleth.
      2 Ils se soulevèrent contre Moïse avec deux cent cinquante autres Israélites, des chefs de la communauté, des membres du conseil, des hommes considérés.
      3 Ils s’attroupèrent autour de Moïse et d’Aaron et leur lancèrent : —C’en est assez ! C’est la communauté tout entière qui est sainte et l’Eternel est au milieu de nous tous. De quel droit vous mettez-vous au-dessus de la communauté de l’Eternel ?
      4 En entendant ces reproches, Moïse se jeta face contre terre.
      5 Puis il s’adressa à Qoré et à toute sa troupe en disant : —Demain matin, l’Eternel fera connaître celui qui lui appartient et qui est saint et peut venir en sa présence : il fera approcher de lui celui qu’il choisira.
      6 Voilà donc ce que vous ferez : Que Qoré et tous ses partisans prennent des encensoirs,
      7 qu’ils les remplissent demain de charbons embrasés, et y répandent de l’*encens devant l’Eternel. C’est celui que l’Eternel choisira, qui est saint. C’en est assez, descendants de Lévi !
      8 Puis Moïse ajouta à l’adresse de Qoré : —Ecoutez-moi bien, vous les lévites !
      9 Ne vous suffit-il pas d’avoir été mis à part du reste de la communauté d’Israël par le Dieu d’Israël qui vous permet de l’approcher pour faire le service du *tabernacle de l’Eternel et pour vous tenir devant la communauté en accomplissant un ministère en sa faveur ?
      10 Il vous permet, à toi et à tous tes frères lévites, de vous approcher de lui, et vous réclamez en plus le sacerdoce !
      11 C’est pour cela que toi et toute ta troupe, vous vous liguez contre l’Eternel ! Car en fait, qu’est Aaron pour que vous protestiez contre lui ?
      12 Puis Moïse envoya chercher Datan et Abirâm, fils d’Eliab. Mais ceux-ci lui répondirent : —Nous n’irons pas !
      13 Ne te suffit-il pas de nous avoir fait quitter un pays ruisselant de lait et de miel pour nous faire mourir au désert ? Faut-il encore que tu t’ériges en dictateur au-dessus de nous ?
      14 Ce n’est pas dans un pays ruisselant de lait et de miel que tu nous as conduits ! Ce ne sont pas des champs et des vignes que tu nous as donnés en possession ! Prends-tu tous ces gens-là pour des aveugles ? Non, nous n’irons pas !
      15 Moïse entra dans une violente colère et il dit à l’Eternel : —N’accepte pas leur offrande ! Je n’ai jamais rien pris de ce qui leur appartenait, pas même un âne, et je n’ai fait de tort à aucun d’eux.
      16 Moïse dit à Qoré : —Toi et toute ta troupe, présentez-vous demain avec Aaron devant l’Eternel.
      17 Prenez chacun votre encensoir, mettez-y de l’*encens et présentez-vous devant l’Eternel avec vos deux cent cinquante encensoirs ; toi aussi et Aaron vous tiendrez chacun le vôtre.
      18 Chacun prit donc son encensoir et y mit des charbons ardents qu’il couvrit d’encens. Ils se placèrent tous à l’entrée de la *tente de la Rencontre, de même que Moïse et Aaron.
      19 Qoré avait rassemblé toute la communauté à l’entrée de la tente de la Rencontre en l’excitant contre eux. Soudain, la gloire de l’Eternel apparut à toute l’assemblée.
      20 L’Eternel parla à Moïse et à Aaron en ces termes :
      21 —Séparez-vous du milieu de cette communauté, et je les consumerai en un seul instant !
      22 Mais ils se jetèrent face contre terre et prièrent : —O Dieu ! Dieu qui disposes du souffle de vie de toutes les créatures, t’emporteras-tu contre toute la communauté alors qu’un seul homme a péché ?
      23 L’Eternel répondit à Moïse :
      24 —Parle à la communauté et ordonne-leur de s’écarter des abords des tentes de Qoré, de Datan et d’Abirâm.
      25 Moïse se releva et, suivi des responsables d’Israël, il marcha vers Datan et Abirâm,
      26 et il dit à la communauté : —Eloignez-vous des tentes de ces hommes *méchants et ne touchez à rien de ce qui leur appartient, si vous ne voulez pas périr, vous aussi, à cause de toutes leurs fautes !
      27 Aussitôt, on s’éloigna des tentes de Qoré, de Datan et d’Abirâm. Datan et Abirâm sortirent et se postèrent à l’entrée de leurs tentes avec leurs femmes, leurs fils et leurs enfants.
      28 Moïse déclara : —Voici comment vous reconnaîtrez que l’Eternel m’a confié la mission d’accomplir tout ce que je fais et que je n’agis pas de mon propre chef :
      29 Si ces gens-là meurent de mort naturelle, et s’ils subissent seulement le sort commun à tous les hommes, alors ce n’est pas l’Eternel qui m’a confié ma mission.
      30 Mais si l’Eternel accomplit quelque chose d’extraordinaire, si la terre s’ouvre pour les engloutir avec tout ce qui leur appartient et qu’ils descendent vivants dans le séjour des morts, alors vous reconnaîtrez que ces gens ont outragé l’Eternel.
      31 A peine eut-il achevé de prononcer ces paroles, que le sol se fendit sous les pieds de Datan et d’Abirâm.
      32 La terre s’ouvrit et les engloutit, eux et les leurs, ainsi que tous les partisans de Qoré et tous leurs biens.
      33 Ces hommes descendirent vivants dans le séjour des morts avec tous les leurs, et la terre se referma sur eux. C’est ainsi qu’ils disparurent du milieu de l’assemblée.
      34 A leurs cris, tous les Israélites, qui se tenaient autour, s’enfuirent en criant : —Fuyons, de peur que la terre ne nous engloutisse, nous aussi !
      35 Un feu jaillit d’auprès de l’Eternel et consuma les deux cent cinquante hommes qui présentaient l’encens.

      1 L’Eternel parla à Moïse et dit :
      2 —Parle à Eléazar, fils du prêtre Aaron, et demande-lui d’arracher de l’incendie les encensoirs et d’en répandre au loin les charbons ardents, car ils sont devenus des objets sacrés.
      3 Que l’on prenne donc les encensoirs de ces gens qui ont péché et l’ont payé de leur vie et qu’on les martèle pour en faire des lames minces dont on recouvrira l’autel ; car ils ont été présentés devant l’Eternel et ils sont devenus sacrés : ils serviront de signe d’avertissement aux Israélites.
      4 Eléazar le prêtre prit les brasiers de bronze qu’avaient présentés les hommes qui avaient été consumés et l’on en fit des lames pour recouvrir l’autel.
      5 Ces plaques rappellent aux Israélites qu’aucun profane, étranger à la descendance d’Aaron, ne doit s’approcher pour offrir de l’encens devant l’Eternel, sous peine de subir le même sort que Qoré et sa troupe, comme l’Eternel l’avait demandé par l’intermédiaire de Moïse.
      6 Le lendemain, toute la communauté des Israélites se mit à se plaindre de Moïse et d’Aaron, en disant : —Vous faites mourir le peuple de l’Eternel !
      7 Mais pendant qu’ils s’attroupaient pour s’en prendre à eux et qu’ils se tournaient vers la *tente de la Rencontre, voici que soudain la nuée la couvrit et que la gloire de l’Eternel apparut.
      8 Moïse et Aaron allèrent se placer devant la tente de la Rencontre.
      9 L’Eternel dit à Moïse :
      10 —Ecartez-vous de cette communauté et je les consumerai en un instant. Alors ils se jetèrent face contre terre,
      11 puis Moïse dit à Aaron : —Prends vite ton encensoir et mets-y des charbons ardents pris sur l’autel, répands-y de l’encens et hâte-toi d’aller avec cela vers la communauté, accomplis pour elle un rite d’*expiation, car la colère de l’Eternel se déchaîne et, déjà, le fléau sévit.
      12 Aaron fit ce que Moïse lui avait dit : il prit l’encensoir et courut au milieu de l’assemblée ; le fléau avait effectivement déjà commencé à frapper le peuple. Aaron répandit l’encens pour accomplir le rite d’expiation pour le peuple.
      13 Il se plaça entre les morts et les vivants, et la mort cessa de frapper.
