      1 Au commencement, Dieu crée le ciel et la terre.
      2 La terre est comme un grand vide. Elle est dans la nuit. Une eau profonde la recouvre. Le souffle de Dieu se tient au-dessus de l’eau.
      3 Dieu dit : « Que la lumière brille ! » Et la lumière se met à briller.
      4 Dieu voit que la lumière est une bonne chose. Alors il sépare la lumière de l’obscurité.
      5 Dieu appelle la lumière « jour », et l’obscurité, il l’appelle « nuit ». Il y a un soir, il y a un matin. Voilà le premier jour.
      6 Dieu dit : « Qu’un toit, au milieu de l’eau, la sépare en deux parties ! »
      7 Et cela arrive. Ainsi, Dieu fait le toit qui sépare l’eau d’en haut et l’eau d’en bas.
      8 Dieu appelle le toit « ciel ». Il y a un soir, il y a un matin. Voilà le deuxième jour.
      9 Dieu dit : « Que toute l’eau qui est sous le ciel se rassemble au même endroit, et que le sol apparaisse ! » Et cela arrive.
      10 Dieu appelle le sol « terre », et l’eau, il l’appelle « mer ». Dieu voit que c’est une bonne chose.
      11 Dieu dit : « Que la terre produise l’herbe verte, avec toutes sortes de plantes et toutes sortes d’arbres à fruits ! Sur la terre, chaque plante aura ses graines. Chaque arbre aura ses fruits, avec des pépins ou un noyau, selon son espèce. » Et cela arrive.

      13 Il y a un soir, il y a un matin. Voilà le troisième jour.
      14 Dieu dit : « Que des lumières dans le ciel séparent le jour et la nuit ! Elles marqueront les fêtes, les jours et les années.
      15 Dans le ciel, elles serviront à éclairer la terre. » Et cela arrive.
      16 Ainsi, Dieu fait les deux grandes sources de lumière : la plus grande pour commander au jour, et la plus petite pour commander à la nuit. Il fait aussi les étoiles.
      17 Dieu les place dans le ciel pour éclairer la terre,
      18 pour commander au jour et à la nuit et séparer la lumière de l’obscurité. Dieu voit que c’est une bonne chose.
      19 Il y a un soir, il y a un matin. Voilà le quatrième jour.
      20 Dieu dit : « Que toutes sortes d’animaux vivent dans la mer ! Que les oiseaux volent dans le ciel au-dessus de la terre ! »
      21 Dieu crée les grands animaux de la mer et toutes les espèces d’animaux qui se déplacent et s’agitent dans l’eau. Il crée aussi toutes les espèces d’oiseaux. Dieu voit que c’est une bonne chose.
      22 Dieu les bénit en disant : « Faites des petits, devenez nombreux. Remplissez l’eau des mers. Et vous, les oiseaux, devenez nombreux sur la terre. »
      23 Il y a un soir, il y a un matin. Voilà le cinquième jour.
      24 Dieu dit : « Que la terre produise toutes sortes d’animaux : animaux domestiques, petites bêtes et animaux sauvages de chaque espèce ! » Et cela arrive.
      25 Ainsi, Dieu fait les différentes espèces d’animaux : les animaux sauvages, les animaux domestiques et les petites bêtes. Dieu voit que c’est une bonne chose.
      26 Dieu dit : « Faisons les êtres humains à notre image, et qu’ils nous ressemblent vraiment ! Qu’ils commandent aux poissons dans la mer, aux oiseaux dans le ciel, aux animaux domestiques et à toutes les petites bêtes qui se déplacent sur le sol ! »
      27 Alors Dieu crée les humains à son image, et ils sont vraiment à l’image de Dieu. Il les crée homme et femme.
      28 Puis il les bénit en disant : « Ayez des enfants, devenez nombreux. Remplissez la terre et dominez-la. Commandez aux poissons dans la mer, aux oiseaux dans le ciel et à tous les animaux qui se déplacent sur la terre. »
      29 Dieu dit : « Sur toute la terre, je vous donne toutes les plantes avec leurs graines. Je vous donne aussi tous les arbres qui portent des fruits avec des pépins ou un noyau : ce sera votre nourriture.
      30 Et je donne toute l’herbe verte comme nourriture à tous les animaux de la terre, à tous les oiseaux, à toutes les bêtes qui se déplacent sur le sol, en un mot, à tout ce qui est vivant. » Et cela arrive.
      31 Dieu regarde tout ce qu’il a fait. Et il voit que c’est une très bonne chose. Il y a un soir, il y a un matin. Voilà le sixième jour.

      Genèse 2

      1 Ainsi Dieu finit de créer le ciel, la terre et tout ce qu’il y a dedans.
      2 Le septième jour, Dieu a terminé le travail qu’il a fait. Et le septième jour, il se repose de tout le travail qu’il a fait.
      3 Dieu bénit le septième jour : il fait de ce jour-là un jour qui lui est réservé. En effet, ce jour-là, Dieu s’est reposé de tout son travail de créateur.
      4 Voilà comment Dieu a créé le ciel et la terre. Au moment où le SEIGNEUR Dieu fait le ciel et la terre,
      5 il n’y a encore aucune plante dans les champs, et l’herbe n’a pas encore poussé. En effet, le SEIGNEUR Dieu n’a pas encore fait tomber la pluie sur la terre, et il n’y a pas d’êtres humains pour cultiver le sol.
      6 Mais une sorte de source sort de la terre et arrose toute la surface du sol.
      7 Le SEIGNEUR Dieu prend de la poussière du sol et il forme un être humain. Puis il souffle dans son nez le souffle de vie, et cet homme devient un être vivant.
      8 Ensuite, le SEIGNEUR Dieu plante un jardin dans le pays d’Éden, vers l’est. Là, il met l’homme qu’il a formé.
      9 Le SEIGNEUR Dieu fait pousser du sol toutes sortes de beaux arbres, avec des fruits délicieux. Au milieu du jardin, il place l’arbre de vie et l’arbre qui fait connaître ce qui est bien ou mal.
      10 Un fleuve sort du pays d’Éden pour arroser le jardin. De là, il se divise en quatre fleuves plus petits.
      11 Le premier fleuve, c’est le Pichon. Il fait le tour du pays de Havila. À cet endroit, il y a de l’or,
      12 et l’or de ce pays est pur. On y trouve aussi des plantes parfumées et une pierre précieuse rouge foncé.
      13 Le deuxième fleuve, c’est le Guihon. Il fait le tour de tout le pays de Kouch.
      14 Le troisième fleuve, c’est le Tigre. Il coule à l’est de la ville d’Assour. Le quatrième fleuve, c’est l’Euphrate.
      15 Le SEIGNEUR Dieu prend l’homme et il le place dans le jardin d’Éden pour le cultiver et pour le garder.
      16 Le SEIGNEUR Dieu donne cet ordre à l’homme : « Tu peux manger les fruits de tous les arbres du jardin.
      17 Mais tu ne dois pas manger les fruits de l’arbre qui fait connaître ce qui est bien ou mal. Oui, le jour où tu en mangeras, tu mourras, c’est sûr. »
      18 Le SEIGNEUR Dieu se dit : « Pour l’homme, ce n’est pas bon d’être seul. Je vais lui faire une aide qui lui convienne parfaitement. »
      19 Avec de la terre, le SEIGNEUR Dieu fait toutes sortes de bêtes sauvages et toutes sortes d’oiseaux. Il les amène à l’homme pour voir comment celui-ci va les appeler. Chaque animal doit avoir le nom que l’homme va lui donner.
      20 L’homme donne un nom à tous les animaux domestiques, à toutes les bêtes sauvages et à tous les oiseaux. Mais pour lui-même, il ne trouve pas l’aide qui lui convienne parfaitement.
      21 Alors le SEIGNEUR Dieu fait tomber l’homme dans un sommeil très profond. Il lui prend une côte et il referme la peau à sa place.
      22 Avec cette côte, le SEIGNEUR Dieu fait une femme et il l’amène à l’homme.
      23 Alors l’homme dit : « Cette fois, voici quelqu’un comme moi ! Elle tient vraiment de moi par tout son corps. On l’appellera femme de l’homme, parce qu’elle vient de l’homme. »
      24 C’est pourquoi l’homme quittera son père et sa mère pour vivre avec sa femme. Et les deux deviendront comme une seule personne.
      25 L’homme et sa femme sont nus tous les deux. Mais ils n’ont pas honte l’un devant l’autre.

      Genèse 3

      1 Parmi les bêtes sauvages que le SEIGNEUR Dieu a faites, le serpent est le plus rusé. Il demande à la femme : « Est-ce que Dieu vous a vraiment dit : “Ne mangez aucun fruit du jardin” ? »
      2 La femme répond au serpent : « Nous pouvons manger les fruits du jardin.
      3 Mais pour l’arbre qui est au milieu du jardin, Dieu a dit : “Ne mangez pas ses fruits et n’y touchez pas ! Sinon, vous mourrez.” »
      4 Le serpent répond à la femme : « Pas du tout ! Vous ne mourrez pas !
      5 Mais Dieu le sait bien : le jour où vous en mangerez, vos yeux s’ouvriront. Vous serez comme des dieux, vous pourrez savoir ce qui est bien ou mal. »
      6 La femme se dit : les fruits de cet arbre sont beaux, ils doivent être bons. Ils donnent envie d’en manger pour savoir plus de choses. Elle prend un fruit de cet arbre et le mange. Elle en donne à son mari qui est avec elle, et il en mange aussi.
      7 Alors leurs yeux s’ouvrent. Maintenant, ils voient qu’ils sont nus. Ils attachent ensemble des feuilles d’arbre, et cela leur sert de pagne.
      8 Le soir, un vent léger se met à souffler. Le SEIGNEUR Dieu se promène dans le jardin. L’homme et la femme l’entendent et ils se cachent devant lui, parmi les arbres du jardin.
      9 Le SEIGNEUR Dieu appelle l’homme. Il lui demande : « Où es-tu ? »
      10 L’homme répond : « Je t’ai entendu dans le jardin. J’ai eu peur parce que je suis nu. Alors, je me suis caché. »
      11 Le SEIGNEUR Dieu lui demande : « Qui t’a appris que tu étais nu ? Est-ce que tu as mangé le fruit que je t’avais interdit de manger ? »
      12 L’homme répond : « La femme que tu m’as donnée, c’est elle qui m’a donné ce fruit, et j’en ai mangé. »
      13 Le SEIGNEUR Dieu dit à la femme : « Qu’est-ce que tu as fait là ? » La femme répond : « Le serpent m’a trompée, et j’ai mangé du fruit. »
      14 Alors le SEIGNEUR Dieu dit au serpent : « Puisque tu as fait cela, je te maudis : parmi tous les animaux, tu avanceras sur ton ventre et tu mangeras de la poussière tous les jours de ta vie.
      15 Voici ce que je décide : la femme et toi, vous deviendrez des ennemis. Ceux qui naîtront d’elle et ceux qui naîtront de toi deviendront des ennemis. Ceux qui naîtront d’elle t’écraseront à la tête, et toi, tu les blesseras au talon. »
      16 Ensuite, le SEIGNEUR dit à la femme : « Je rendrai tes grossesses pénibles, et c’est dans la souffrance que tu mettras des enfants au monde. Tu seras attirée par ton mari, mais il sera ton maître. »
      17 Puis le SEIGNEUR dit à l’homme : « Tu as écouté ta femme et tu as mangé le fruit que je t’avais interdit de manger. À cause de toi je maudis le sol. Tu devras te fatiguer tous les jours de ta vie pour tirer ta nourriture de la terre.
      18 Le sol produira pour toi des plantes épineuses de toutes sortes. Tu devras manger ce qui pousse dans les champs.
      19 Tu gagneras ta nourriture en transpirant beaucoup, jusqu’à ta mort. À ce moment-là, tu retourneras dans la terre d’où tu viens. Oui, tu es fait de poussière et tu retourneras à la poussière. »
      20 L’homme, Adam, donne à sa femme le nom d’Ève, c’est-à-dire « la Vivante ». En effet, elle est la mère de tous les vivants.
      21 Le SEIGNEUR Dieu fait des vêtements en peau d’animal pour l’homme et la femme, et il les habille de cette façon.
      22 Le SEIGNEUR Dieu se dit : « Eh bien, l’homme est devenu comme un dieu : il connaît ce qui est bien ou mal. Maintenant, il ne faut pas qu’il prenne aussi les fruits de l’arbre de la vie. S’il en mangeait, il vivrait pour toujours. »
      23 Alors le SEIGNEUR Dieu chasse l’homme du jardin d’Éden et il l’envoie cultiver la terre qui a servi à le faire.
      24 Après que le SEIGNEUR a chassé l’homme, il place des chérubins à l’est du jardin d’Éden. Avec une épée de feu qui tourne dans tous les sens, les chérubins gardent l’entrée du chemin qui conduit à l’arbre de la vie.

      2 Now the earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep. God's Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters.
      3 God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
      4 God saw the light, and saw that it was good. God divided the light from the darkness.
      5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." There was evening and there was morning, one day.
      6 God said, "Let there be an expanse in the middle of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters."
      7 God made the expanse, and divided the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so.
      8 God called the expanse "sky." There was evening and there was morning, a second day.
      9 God said, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear"; and it was so.
      10 God called the dry land "earth," and the gathering together of the waters he called "seas." God saw that it was good.
      11 God said, "Let the earth yield grass, herbs yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with its seed in it, on the earth"; and it was so.
      12 The earth yielded grass, herbs yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, with its seed in it, after their kind; and God saw that it was good.
      13 There was evening and there was morning, a third day.
      14 God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of sky to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years;
      15 and let them be for lights in the expanse of sky to give light on the earth"; and it was so.
      16 God made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars.
      17 God set them in the expanse of sky to give light to the earth,
      18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good.
      19 There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.
      20 God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of sky."
      21 God created the large sea creatures, and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind. God saw that it was good.
      22 God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth."
      23 There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.
      24 God said, "Let the earth produce living creatures after their kind, livestock, creeping things, and animals of the earth after their kind"; and it was so.
      25 God made the animals of the earth after their kind, and the livestock after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind. God saw that it was good.
      26 God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."
      27 God created man in his own image. In God's image he created him; male and female he created them.
      28 God blessed them. God said to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth."
      29 God said, "Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree, which bears fruit yielding seed. It will be your food.
      30 To every animal of the earth, and to every bird of the sky, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food"; and it was so.
      31 God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

      Genèse 2

      1 The heavens and the earth were finished, and all their vast array.
      2 On the seventh day God finished his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
      3 God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because he rested in it from all his work which he had created and made.
      4 This is the history of the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that Yahweh God made the earth and the heavens.
      5 No plant of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for Yahweh God had not caused it to rain on the earth. There was not a man to till the ground,
      6 but a mist went up from the earth, and watered the whole surface of the ground.
      7 Yahweh God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
      8 Yahweh God planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed.
      9 Out of the ground Yahweh God made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the middle of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
      10 A river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it was parted, and became four heads.
      11 The name of the first is Pishon: this is the one which flows through the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;
      12 and the gold of that land is good. There is aromatic resin and the onyx stone.
      13 The name of the second river is Gihon: the same river that flows through the whole land of Cush.
      14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel: this is the one which flows in front of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
      15 Yahweh God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
      16 Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;
      17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it; for in the day that you eat of it you will surely die."
      18 Yahweh God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him."
      19 Out of the ground Yahweh God formed every animal of the field, and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.
      20 The man gave names to all livestock, and to the birds of the sky, and to every animal of the field; but for man there was not found a helper suitable for him.
      21 Yahweh God caused a deep sleep to fall on the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place.
      22 He made the rib, which Yahweh God had taken from the man, into a woman, and brought her to the man.
      23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called 'woman,' because she was taken out of Man."
      24 Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.
      25 They were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

      Genèse 3

      1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any animal of the field which Yahweh God had made. He said to the woman, "Has God really said, 'You shall not eat of any tree of the garden?'"
      2 The woman said to the serpent, "Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat,
      3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'"
      4 The serpent said to the woman, "You won't surely die,
      5 for God knows that in the day you eat it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
      6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit, and ate; and she gave some to her husband with her, and he ate.
      7 The eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
      8 They heard the voice of Yahweh God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden.
      9 Yahweh God called to the man, and said to him, "Where are you?"
      10 The man said, "I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself."
      11 God said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?"
      12 The man said, "The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate."
      13 Yahweh God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."
      14 Yahweh God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, you are cursed above all livestock, and above every animal of the field. On your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.
      15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel."
      16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth. In pain you will bear children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you."
      17 To Adam he said, "Because you have listened to your wife's voice, and have eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground for your sake. In toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.
      18 It will yield thorns and thistles to you; and you will eat the herb of the field.
      19 By the sweat of your face will you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return."
      20 The man called his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
      21 Yahweh God made coats of skins for Adam and for his wife, and clothed them.
      22 Yahweh God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand, and also take of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever..."
      23 Therefore Yahweh God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken.
      24 So he drove out the man; and he placed Cherubs at the east of the garden of Eden, and the flame of a sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
