  18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this; for after his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
  
  19 Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly.
  
  20 But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take to yourself Mary, your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
  
  21 She shall bring forth a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins."
  
  22 Now all this has happened, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,
  
  23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son. They shall call his name Immanuel"; which is, being interpreted, "God with us."
  
  24 Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife to himself;
  
  25 and didn't know her sexually until she had brought forth her firstborn son. He named him Jesus.
  
  Matthieu 2
  
  1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying,
  
  2 "Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him."
  
  3 When King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
  
  4 Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born.
  
  5 They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is written through the prophet,
  
  6 'You Bethlehem, land of Judah, are in no way least among the princes of Judah: for out of you shall come forth a governor, who shall shepherd my people, Israel.'"
  
  7 Then Herod secretly called the wise men, and learned from them exactly what time the star appeared.
  
  8 He sent them to Bethlehem, and said, "Go and search diligently for the young child. When you have found him, bring me word, so that I also may come and worship him."
  
  9 They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, until it came and stood over where the young child was.
  
  10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.
  
  11 They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
  
  12 Being warned in a dream that they shouldn't return to Herod, they went back to their own country another way.
  
  13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him."
  
  14 He arose and took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt,
  
  15 and was there until the death of Herod; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called my son."
  
  Luc 1
  
  26 Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
  
  27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary.
  
  28 Having come in, the angel said to her, "Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!"
  
  29 But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be.
  
  30 The angel said to her, "Don't be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
  
  31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and will call his name 'Jesus.'
  
  32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David,
  
  33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom."
  
  34 Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?"
  
  35 The angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God.
  
  36 Behold, Elizabeth, your relative, also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
  
  37 For everything spoken by God is possible."
  
  38 Mary said, "Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it to me according to your word." The angel departed from her.
  
  39 Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah,
  
  40 and entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.
  
  41 It happened, when Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, that the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
  
  42 She called out with a loud voice, and said, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!
  
  43 Why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
  
  44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came into my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy!
  
  45 Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!"
  
  46 Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord.
  
  47 My spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior,
  
  48 for he has looked at the humble state of his handmaid. For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed.
  
  49 For he who is mighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name.
  
  50 His mercy is for generations of generations on those who fear him.
  
  51 He has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
  
  52 He has put down princes from their thrones. And has exalted the lowly.
  
  53 He has filled the hungry with good things. He has sent the rich away empty.
  
  54 He has given help to Israel, his servant, that he might remember mercy,
  
  55 As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and his seed forever."
  
  56 Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her house.
  
  Luc 2
  
  1 Now it happened in those days, that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled.
  
  2 This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
  
  3 All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city.
  
  4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David;
  
  5 to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant.
  
  6 It happened, while they were there, that the day had come that she should give birth.
  
  7 She brought forth her firstborn son, and she wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.
  
  8 There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.
  
  9 Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
  
  10 The angel said to them, "Don't be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people.
  
  11 For there is born to you, this day, in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.
  
  12 This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough."
  
  13 Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God, and saying,
  
  14 "Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men."
  
  15 It happened, when the angels went away from them into the sky, that the shepherds said one to another, "Let's go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us."
  
  16 They came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby was lying in the feeding trough.
  
  17 When they saw it, they publicized widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child.
  
  18 All who heard it wondered at the things which were spoken to them by the shepherds.
  
  19 But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.
  
  20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told them.
  
  21 When eight days were fulfilled for the circumcision of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
  
  22 When the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord
  
  23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord"),
  
  24 and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, "A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons."
  
  25 Behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him.
  
  26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
  
  27 He came in the Spirit into the temple. When the parents brought in the child, Jesus, that they might do concerning him according to the custom of the law,
  
  28 then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,
  
  29 "Now you are releasing your servant, Master, according to your word, in peace;
  
  30 for my eyes have seen your salvation,
  
  31 which you have prepared before the face of all peoples;
  
  32 a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel."
  
  33 Joseph and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him,
  
  34 and Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, "Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against.
  
  35 Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."
  
  36 There was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity,
  
  37 and she had been a widow for about eighty-four years), who didn't depart from the temple, worshipping with fastings and petitions night and day.
  
  38 Coming up at that very hour, she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of him to all those who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem.
  
  39 When they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth.
  
  40 The child was growing, and was becoming strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.

  18 Voici de quelle manière arriva la naissance de Jésus-Christ. Marie, sa mère, était fiancée à Joseph ; or, avant qu'ils aient habité ensemble, elle se trouva enceinte par l'action du Saint-Esprit.
  
  19 Joseph, son fiancé, qui était un homme juste et qui ne voulait pas l’exposer au déshonneur, se proposa de rompre secrètement avec elle.
  
  20 Comme il y pensait, un ange du Seigneur lui apparut dans un rêve et dit : « Joseph, descendant de David, n’aie pas peur de prendre Marie pour femme, car l'enfant qu’elle porte vient du Saint-Esprit.
  
  21 Elle mettra au monde un fils et tu lui donneras le nom de Jésus car c'est lui qui sauvera son peuple de ses péchés. »
  
  22 Tout cela arriva afin que s'accomplisse ce que le Seigneur avait annoncé par le prophète :
  
  23 La vierge sera enceinte, elle mettra au monde un fils et on l’appellera Emmanuel, ce qui signifie « Dieu avec nous ».
  
  24 A son réveil, Joseph fit ce que l'ange du Seigneur lui avait ordonné et il prit sa femme chez lui,
  
  25 mais il n'eut pas de relations conjugales avec elle jusqu'à ce qu'elle ait mis au monde un fils [premier-né] auquel il donna le nom de Jésus.
  
  Matthieu 2
  
  1 Jésus naquit à Bethléhem en Judée, à l’époque du roi Hérode. Or, des mages venus d'Orient arrivèrent à Jérusalem
  
  2 et dirent : « Où est le roi des Juifs qui vient de naître ? En effet, nous avons vu son étoile en Orient et nous sommes venus pour l'adorer. »
  
  3 Quand le roi Hérode apprit cela, il fut troublé et tout Jérusalem avec lui.
  
  4 Il rassembla tous les chefs des prêtres et spécialistes de la loi que comptait le peuple et leur demanda où le Messie devait naître.
  
  5 Ils lui dirent : « A Bethléhem en Judée, car voici ce qui a été écrit par le prophète :
  
  6 Et toi, Bethléhem, terre de Juda, tu n'es certes pas la plus petite parmi les principales villes de Juda, car de toi sortira un chef qui prendra soin d’Israël, mon peuple. »
  
  7 Alors Hérode fit appeler en secret les mages ; il s'informa soigneusement auprès d'eux du moment où l'étoile était apparue,
  
  8 puis il les envoya à Bethléhem en disant : « Allez prendre des informations exactes sur le petit enfant. Quand vous l'aurez trouvé, faites-le-moi savoir, afin que j'aille moi aussi l'adorer. »
  
  9 Après avoir entendu le roi, ils partirent. L'étoile qu'ils avaient vue en Orient allait devant eux jusqu'au moment où, arrivée au-dessus de l'endroit où était le petit enfant, elle s'arrêta.
  
  10 Quand ils aperçurent l'étoile, ils furent remplis d'une très grande joie.
  
  11 Ils entrèrent dans la maison, virent le petit enfant avec Marie, sa mère, se prosternèrent et l'adorèrent. Ensuite, ils ouvrirent leurs trésors et lui offrirent en cadeau de l'or, de l'encens et de la myrrhe.
  
  12 Puis, avertis dans un rêve de ne pas retourner vers Hérode, ils regagnèrent leur pays par un autre chemin.
  
  13 Lorsqu'ils furent partis, un ange du Seigneur apparut dans un rêve à Joseph et dit : « Lève-toi, prends le petit enfant et sa mère, fuis en Egypte et restes-y jusqu'à ce que je te parle, car Hérode va rechercher le petit enfant pour le faire mourir. »
  
  14 Joseph se leva, prit de nuit le petit enfant et sa mère et se retira en Egypte.
  
  15 Il y resta jusqu'à la mort d'Hérode, afin que s'accomplisse ce que le Seigneur avait annoncé par le prophète : J'ai appelé mon fils à sortir d'Egypte.
  
  Luc 1
  
  26 Le sixième mois, l'ange Gabriel fut envoyé par Dieu dans une ville de Galilée, appelée Nazareth,
  
  27 chez une vierge fiancée à un homme de la famille de David, appelé Joseph. Le nom de la vierge était Marie.
  
  28 L'ange entra chez elle et dit : « Je te salue, toi à qui une grâce a été faite, le Seigneur est avec toi. [Tu es bénie parmi les femmes. ] »
  
  29 Troublée par cette parole, Marie se demandait ce que pouvait signifier une telle salutation.
  
  30 L'ange lui dit : « N’aie pas peur, Marie, car tu as trouvé grâce auprès de Dieu.
  
  31 Voici que tu seras enceinte. Tu mettras au monde un fils et tu lui donneras le nom de Jésus.
  
  32 Il sera grand et sera appelé Fils du Très-Haut, et le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de David, son ancêtre.
  
  33 Il régnera sur la famille de Jacob éternellement, son règne n'aura pas de fin. »
  
  34 Marie dit à l'ange : « Comment cela se fera-t-il, puisque je n'ai pas de relations avec un homme ? »
  
  35 L'ange lui répondit : « Le Saint-Esprit viendra sur toi et la puissance du Très-Haut te couvrira de son ombre. C'est pourquoi le saint enfant qui naîtra sera appelé Fils de Dieu.
  
  36 Voici qu'Elisabeth, ta parente, est elle aussi devenue enceinte d'un fils dans sa vieillesse. Celle que l'on appelait ‘la stérile’est dans son sixième mois.
  
  37 En effet, rien n'est impossible à Dieu. »
  
  38 Marie dit : « Je suis la servante du Seigneur. Que ta parole s’accomplisse pour moi ! » Et l'ange la quitta.
  
  39 A la même époque, Marie s'empressa de se rendre dans une ville de la région montagneuse de Juda.
  
  40 Elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie et salua Elisabeth.
  
  41 Dès qu'Elisabeth entendit la salutation de Marie, son enfant remua brusquement en elle et elle fut remplie du Saint-Esprit.
  
  42 Elle s'écria d'une voix forte : « Tu es bénie parmi les femmes et l'enfant que tu portes est béni.
  
  43 Comment m'est-il accordé que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne vers moi ?
  
  44 En effet, dès que j'ai entendu ta salutation, l'enfant a tressailli de joie en moi.
  
  45 Heureuse celle qui a cru, parce que ce qui lui a été dit de la part du Seigneur s'accomplira. »
  
  46 Marie dit : « Mon âme célèbre la grandeur du Seigneur
  
  47 et mon esprit se réjouit en Dieu, mon Sauveur,
  
  48 parce qu'il a porté le regard sur son humble servante. En effet, voici, désormais toutes les générations me diront heureuse,
  
  49 parce que le Tout-Puissant a fait de grandes choses pour moi. Son nom est saint,
  
  50 et sa bonté s'étend de génération en génération sur ceux qui le craignent.
  
  51 Il a agi avec la force de son bras, il a dispersé ceux qui avaient dans le cœur des pensées orgueilleuses.
  
  52 Il a renversé les puissants de leurs trônes et il a élevé les humbles.
  
  53 Il a rassasié de biens les affamés et il a renvoyé les riches les mains vides.
  
  54 Il a secouru Israël, son serviteur, et il s'est souvenu de sa bonté
  
  55 – comme il l'avait dit à nos ancêtres – en faveur d'Abraham et de sa descendance pour toujours. »
  
  56 Marie resta environ trois mois avec Elisabeth, puis elle retourna chez elle.
  
  Luc 2
  
  1 A cette époque-là parut un édit de l'empereur Auguste qui ordonnait le recensement de tout l’Empire.
  
  2 Ce premier recensement eut lieu pendant que Quirinius était gouverneur de Syrie.
  
  3 Tous allaient se faire inscrire, chacun dans sa ville d'origine.
  
  4 Joseph aussi monta de la Galilée, de la ville de Nazareth, pour se rendre en Judée dans la ville de David, appelée Bethléhem, parce qu'il était de la famille et de la lignée de David.
  
  5 Il y alla pour se faire inscrire avec sa femme Marie qui était enceinte.
  
  6 Pendant qu'ils étaient là, le moment où Marie devait accoucher arriva,
  
  7 et elle mit au monde son fils premier-né. Elle l'enveloppa de langes et le coucha dans une mangeoire parce qu'il n'y avait pas de place pour eux dans la salle des hôtes.
  
  8 Il y avait dans la même région des bergers qui passaient la nuit dans les champs pour y garder leur troupeau.
  
  9 Un ange du Seigneur leur apparut et la gloire du Seigneur resplendit autour d'eux. Ils furent saisis d'une grande frayeur.
  
  10 Mais l'ange leur dit : « N’ayez pas peur, car je vous annonce une bonne nouvelle qui sera une source de grande joie pour tout le peuple :
  
  11 aujourd'hui, dans la ville de David, il vous est né un Sauveur qui est le Messie, le Seigneur.
  
  12 Voici à quel signe vous le reconnaîtrez : vous trouverez un nouveau-né enveloppé de langes et couché dans une mangeoire. »
  
  13 Et tout à coup une foule d'anges de l'armée céleste se joignit à l'ange. Ils adressaient des louanges à Dieu et disaient :
  
  14 « Gloire à Dieu dans les lieux très hauts, paix sur la terre et bienveillance parmi les hommes ! »
  
  15 Lorsque les anges les eurent quittés pour retourner au ciel, les bergers se dirent les uns aux autres : « Allons jusqu'à Bethléhem pour voir ce qui est arrivé, ce que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître. »
  
  16 Ils se dépêchèrent d'y aller et ils trouvèrent Marie et Joseph, ainsi que le nouveau-né couché dans la mangeoire.
  
  17 Après l'avoir vu, ils racontèrent ce qui leur avait été dit au sujet de ce petit enfant.
  
  18 Tous ceux qui entendirent les bergers furent étonnés de ce qu'ils leur disaient.
  
  19 Marie gardait le souvenir de tout cela et le méditait dans son cœur.
  
  20 Puis les bergers repartirent en célébrant la gloire de Dieu et en lui adressant des louanges à cause de tout ce qu'ils avaient entendu et vu et qui était conforme à ce qui leur avait été annoncé.
  
  21 Huit jours plus tard, ce fut le moment de circoncire l'enfant ; on lui donna le nom de Jésus, nom que l'ange avait indiqué avant sa conception.
  
  22 Quand la période de leur purification prit fin, conformément à la loi de Moïse, Joseph et Marie l'amenèrent à Jérusalem pour le présenter au Seigneur
  
  23 – suivant ce qui est écrit dans la loi du Seigneur : Tout mâle premier-né sera consacré au Seigneur –
  
  24 et pour offrir en sacrifice un couple de tourterelles ou deux jeunes pigeons, comme cela est prescrit dans la loi du Seigneur.
  
  25 Or il y avait à Jérusalem un homme appelé Siméon. Cet homme était juste et pieux, il attendait la consolation d'Israël et l'Esprit saint était sur lui.
  
  26 Le Saint-Esprit lui avait révélé qu'il ne mourrait pas avant d'avoir vu le Messie du Seigneur.
  
  27 Il vint au temple, poussé par l'Esprit. Et quand les parents amenèrent le petit enfant Jésus pour accomplir à son sujet ce que prescrivait la loi,
  
  28 il le prit dans ses bras, bénit Dieu et dit :
  
  29 « Maintenant, Seigneur, tu laisses ton serviteur s'en aller en paix, conformément à ta promesse,
  
  30 car mes yeux ont vu ton salut,
  
  31 salut que tu as préparé devant tous les peuples,
  
  32 lumière pour éclairer les nations et gloire d'Israël, ton peuple. »
  
  33 Joseph et la mère [de Jésus] étaient émerveillés de ce qu'on disait de lui.
  
  34 Siméon les bénit et dit à Marie, sa mère : « Cet enfant est destiné à amener la chute et le relèvement de beaucoup en Israël et à devenir un signe qui provoquera la contradiction.
  
  35 Toi-même, une épée te transpercera l'âme. Ainsi, les pensées de beaucoup de cœurs seront révélées. »
  
  36 Il y avait aussi une prophétesse, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d'Aser. Elle était d'un âge très avancé. Elle n’avait vécu que 7 ans avec son mari après son mariage.
  
  37 Restée veuve et âgée de 84 ans, elle ne quittait pas le temple ; elle servait Dieu nuit et jour dans le jeûne et dans la prière.
  
  38 Arrivée elle aussi à la même heure, elle disait publiquement sa reconnaissance envers Dieu et parlait de Jésus à tous ceux qui attendaient la délivrance à Jérusalem.
  
  39 Après avoir accompli tout ce que prescrivait la loi du Seigneur, Joseph et Marie retournèrent en Galilée, à Nazareth, leur ville.
  
  40 Or l'enfant grandissait et se fortifiait [en esprit]. Il était rempli de sagesse et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.
