  1 וַיְהִי֩ אִ֨ישׁ אֶחָ֜ד מִן־הָרָמָתַ֛יִם צוֹפִ֖ים מֵהַ֣ר אֶפְרָ֑יִם וּשְׁמ֡וֹ אֶ֠לְקָנָה בֶּן־יְרֹחָ֧ם בֶּן־אֱלִיה֛וּא בֶּן־תֹּ֥חוּ בֶן־צ֖וּף אֶפְרָתִֽי׃
  
  2 וְלוֹ֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י נָשִׁ֔ים שֵׁ֤ם אַחַת֙ חַנָּ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית פְּנִנָּ֑ה וַיְהִ֤י לִפְנִנָּה֙ יְלָדִ֔ים וּלְחַנָּ֖ה אֵ֥ין יְלָדִֽים׃
  
  3 וְעָלָה֩ הָאִ֨ישׁ הַה֤וּא מֵֽעִירוֹ֙ מִיָּמִ֣ים ׀ יָמִ֔ימָה לְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֧ת וְלִזְבֹּ֛חַ לַיהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת בְּשִׁלֹ֑ה וְשָׁ֞ם שְׁנֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־עֵלִ֗י חָפְנִי֙ וּפִ֣נְחָ֔ס כֹּהֲנִ֖ים לַיהוָֽה׃
  
  4 וַיְהִ֣י הַיּ֔וֹם וַיִּזְבַּ֖ח אֶלְקָנָ֑ה וְנָתַ֞ן לִפְנִנָּ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וּֽלְכָל־בָּנֶ֛יהָ וּבְנוֹתֶ֖יהָ מָנֽוֹת׃
  
  5 וּלְחַנָּ֕ה יִתֵּ֛ן מָנָ֥ה אַחַ֖ת אַפָּ֑יִם כִּ֤י אֶת־חַנָּה֙ אָהֵ֔ב וַֽיהוָ֖ה סָגַ֥ר רַחְמָֽהּ׃
  
  6 וְכִֽעֲסַ֤תָּה צָֽרָתָהּ֙ גַּם־כַּ֔עַס בַּעֲב֖וּר הַרְּעִמָ֑הּ כִּֽי־סָגַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה בְּעַ֥ד רַחְמָֽהּ׃
  
  7 וְכֵ֨ן יַעֲשֶׂ֜ה שָׁנָ֣ה בְשָׁנָ֗ה מִדֵּ֤י עֲלֹתָהּ֙ בְּבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה כֵּ֖ן תַּכְעִסֶ֑נָּה וַתִּבְכֶּ֖ה וְלֹ֥א תֹאכַֽל׃
  
  8 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לָ֜הּ אֶלְקָנָ֣ה אִישָׁ֗הּ חַנָּה֙ לָ֣מֶה תִבְכִּ֗י וְלָ֙מֶה֙ לֹ֣א תֹֽאכְלִ֔י וְלָ֖מֶה יֵרַ֣ע לְבָבֵ֑ךְ הֲל֤וֹא אָֽנֹכִי֙ ט֣וֹב לָ֔ךְ מֵעֲשָׂרָ֖ה בָּנִֽים׃
  
  9 וַתָּ֣קָם חַנָּ֔ה אַחֲרֵ֛י אָכְלָ֥ה בְשִׁלֹ֖ה וְאַחֲרֵ֣י שָׁתֹ֑ה וְעֵלִ֣י הַכֹּהֵ֗ן יֹשֵׁב֙ עַל־הַכִּסֵּ֔א עַל־מְזוּזַ֖ת הֵיכַ֥ל יְהוָֽה׃
  
  10 וְהִ֖יא מָ֣רַת נָ֑פֶשׁ וַתִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל עַל־יְהוָ֖ה וּבָכֹ֥ה תִבְכֶּֽה׃
  
  11 וַתִּדֹּ֨ר נֶ֜דֶר וַתֹּאמַ֗ר יְהוָ֨ה צְבָא֜וֹת אִם־רָאֹ֥ה תִרְאֶ֣ה ׀ בָּעֳנִ֣י אֲמָתֶ֗ךָ וּזְכַרְתַּ֙נִי֙ וְלֹֽא־תִשְׁכַּ֣ח אֶת־אֲמָתֶ֔ךָ וְנָתַתָּ֥ה לַאֲמָתְךָ֖ זֶ֣רַע אֲנָשִׁ֑ים וּנְתַתִּ֤יו לַֽיהוָה֙ כָּל־יְמֵ֣י חַיָּ֔יו וּמוֹרָ֖ה לֹא־יַעֲלֶ֥ה עַל־רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃
  
  12 וְהָיָה֙ כִּ֣י הִרְבְּתָ֔ה לְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖ל לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְעֵלִ֖י שֹׁמֵ֥ר אֶת־פִּֽיהָ׃
  
  13 וְחַנָּ֗ה הִ֚יא מְדַבֶּ֣רֶת עַל־לִבָּ֔הּ רַ֚ק שְׂפָתֶ֣יהָ נָּע֔וֹת וְקוֹלָ֖הּ לֹ֣א יִשָּׁמֵ֑עַ וַיַּחְשְׁבֶ֥הָ עֵלִ֖י לְשִׁכֹּרָֽה׃
  
  14 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ עֵלִ֔י עַד־מָתַ֖י תִּשְׁתַּכָּרִ֑ין הָסִ֥ירִי אֶת־יֵינֵ֖ךְ מֵעָלָֽיִךְ׃
  
  15 וַתַּ֨עַן חַנָּ֤ה וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לֹ֣א אֲדֹנִ֔י אִשָּׁ֤ה קְשַׁת־ר֙וּחַ֙ אָנֹ֔כִי וְיַ֥יִן וְשֵׁכָ֖ר לֹ֣א שָׁתִ֑יתִי וָאֶשְׁפֹּ֥ךְ אֶת־נַפְשִׁ֖י לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃
  
  16 אַל־תִּתֵּן֙ אֶת־אֲמָ֣תְךָ֔ לִפְנֵ֖י בַּת־בְּלִיָּ֑עַל כִּֽי־מֵרֹ֥ב שִׂיחִ֛י וְכַעְסִ֖י דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי עַד־הֵֽנָּה׃
  
  17 וַיַּ֧עַן עֵלִ֛י וַיֹּ֖אמֶר לְכִ֣י לְשָׁל֑וֹם וֵאלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל יִתֵּן֙ אֶת־שֵׁ֣לָתֵ֔ךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁאַ֖לְתְּ מֵעִמּֽוֹ׃
  
  18 וַתֹּ֕אמֶר תִּמְצָ֧א שִׁפְחָתְךָ֛ חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ וַתֵּ֨לֶךְ הָאִשָּׁ֤ה לְדַרְכָּהּ֙ וַתֹּאכַ֔ל וּפָנֶ֥יהָ לֹא־הָיוּ־לָ֖הּ עֽוֹד׃
  
  19 וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣מוּ בַבֹּ֗קֶר וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲווּ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּשֻׁ֛בוּ וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ אֶל־בֵּיתָ֖ם הָרָמָ֑תָה וַיֵּ֤דַע אֶלְקָנָה֙ אֶת־חַנָּ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וַיִּֽזְכְּרֶ֖הָ יְהוָֽה׃
  
  20 וַיְהִי֙ לִתְקֻפ֣וֹת הַיָּמִ֔ים וַתַּ֥הַר חַנָּ֖ה וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַתִּקְרָ֤א אֶת־שְׁמוֹ֙ שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל כִּ֥י מֵיְהוָ֖ה שְׁאִלְתִּֽיו׃
  
  21 וַיַּ֛עַל הָאִ֥ישׁ אֶלְקָנָ֖ה וְכָל־בֵּית֑וֹ לִזְבֹּ֧חַ לַֽיהוָ֛ה אֶת־זֶ֥בַח הַיָּמִ֖ים וְאֶת־נִדְרֽוֹ׃
  
  22 וְחַנָּ֖ה לֹ֣א עָלָ֑תָה כִּֽי־אָמְרָ֣ה לְאִישָׁ֗הּ עַ֣ד יִגָּמֵ֤ל הַנַּ֙עַר֙ וַהֲבִאֹתִ֗יו וְנִרְאָה֙ אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וְיָ֥שַׁב שָׁ֖ם עַד־עוֹלָֽם׃
  
  23 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהּ֩ אֶלְקָנָ֨ה אִישָׁ֜הּ עֲשִׂ֧י הַטּ֣וֹב בְּעֵינַ֗יִךְ שְׁבִי֙ עַד־גָּמְלֵ֣ךְ אֹת֔וֹ אַ֛ךְ יָקֵ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־דְּבָר֑וֹ וַתֵּ֤שֶׁב הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ וַתֵּ֣ינֶק אֶת־בְּנָ֔הּ עַד־גָּמְלָ֖הּ אֹתֽוֹ׃
  
  24 וַתַּעֲלֵ֨הוּ עִמָּ֜הּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר גְּמָלַ֗תּוּ בְּפָרִ֤ים שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ וְאֵיפָ֨ה אַחַ֥ת קֶ֙מַח֙ וְנֵ֣בֶל יַ֔יִן וַתְּבִאֵ֥הוּ בֵית־יְהוָ֖ה שִׁל֑וֹ וְהַנַּ֖עַר נָֽעַר׃
  
  25 וַֽיִּשְׁחֲט֖וּ אֶת־הַפָּ֑ר וַיָּבִ֥יאוּ אֶת־הַנַּ֖עַר אֶל־עֵלִֽי׃
  
  26 וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י חֵ֥י נַפְשְׁךָ֖ אֲדֹנִ֑י אֲנִ֣י הָאִשָּׁ֗ה הַנִּצֶּ֤בֶת עִמְּכָה֙ בָּזֶ֔ה לְהִתְפַּלֵּ֖ל אֶל־יְהוָֽה׃
  
  27 אֶל־הַנַּ֥עַר הַזֶּ֖ה הִתְפַּלָּ֑לְתִּי וַיִּתֵּ֨ן יְהוָ֥ה לִי֙ אֶת־שְׁאֵ֣לָתִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁאַ֖לְתִּי מֵעִמּֽוֹ׃
  
  28 וְגַ֣ם אָנֹכִ֗י הִשְׁאִלְתִּ֙הוּ֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה כָּל־הַיָּמִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָ֔ה ה֥וּא שָׁא֖וּל לַֽיהוָ֑ה וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ שָׁ֖ם לַיהוָֽה׃

  1 וַתִּתְפַּלֵּ֤ל חַנָּה֙ וַתֹּאמַ֔ר עָלַ֤ץ לִבִּי֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה רָ֥מָה קַרְנִ֖י בַּֽיהוָ֑ה רָ֤חַב פִּי֙ עַל־א֣וֹיְבַ֔י כִּ֥י שָׂמַ֖חְתִּי בִּישׁוּעָתֶֽךָ׃
  
  2 אֵין־קָד֥וֹשׁ כַּיהוָ֖ה כִּ֣י אֵ֣ין בִּלְתֶּ֑ךָ וְאֵ֥ין צ֖וּר כֵּאלֹהֵֽינוּ׃
  
  3 אַל־תַּרְבּ֤וּ תְדַבְּרוּ֙ גְּבֹהָ֣ה גְבֹהָ֔ה יֵצֵ֥א עָתָ֖ק מִפִּיכֶ֑ם כִּ֣י אֵ֤ל דֵּעוֹת֙ יְהוָ֔ה *ולא **וְל֥וֹ נִתְכְּנ֖וּ עֲלִלֽוֹת׃
  
  4 קֶ֥שֶׁת גִּבֹּרִ֖ים חַתִּ֑ים וְנִכְשָׁלִ֖ים אָ֥זְרוּ חָֽיִל׃
  
  5 שְׂבֵעִ֤ים בַּלֶּ֙חֶם֙ נִשְׂכָּ֔רוּ וּרְעֵבִ֖ים חָדֵ֑לּוּ עַד־עֲקָרָה֙ יָלְדָ֣ה שִׁבְעָ֔ה וְרַבַּ֥ת בָּנִ֖ים אֻמְלָֽלָה׃
  
  6 יְהוָ֖ה מֵמִ֣ית וּמְחַיֶּ֑ה מוֹרִ֥יד שְׁא֖וֹל וַיָּֽעַל׃
  
  7 יְהוָ֖ה מוֹרִ֣ישׁ וּמַעֲשִׁ֑יר מַשְׁפִּ֖יל אַף־מְרוֹמֵֽם׃
  
  8 מֵקִ֨ים מֵעָפָ֜ר דָּ֗ל מֵֽאַשְׁפֹּת֙ יָרִ֣ים אֶבְי֔וֹן לְהוֹשִׁיב֙ עִם־נְדִיבִ֔ים וְכִסֵּ֥א כָב֖וֹד יַנְחִלֵ֑ם כִּ֤י לַֽיהוָה֙ מְצֻ֣קֵי אֶ֔רֶץ וַיָּ֥שֶׁת עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם תֵּבֵֽל׃
  
  9 רַגְלֵ֤י *חסידו **חֲסִידָיו֙ יִשְׁמֹ֔ר וּרְשָׁעִ֖ים בַּחֹ֣שֶׁךְ יִדָּ֑מּוּ כִּֽי־לֹ֥א בְכֹ֖חַ יִגְבַּר־אִֽישׁ׃
  
  10 יְהוָ֞ה יֵחַ֣תּוּ *מריבו **מְרִיבָ֗יו *עלו **עָלָיו֙ בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם יַרְעֵ֔ם יְהוָ֖ה יָדִ֣ין אַפְסֵי־אָ֑רֶץ וְיִתֶּן־עֹ֣ז לְמַלְכּ֔וֹ וְיָרֵ֖ם קֶ֥רֶן מְשִׁיחֽוֹ׃
  
  11 וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ אֶלְקָנָ֛ה הָרָמָ֖תָה עַל־בֵּית֑וֹ וְהַנַּ֗עַר הָיָ֤ה מְשָׁרֵת֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֔ה אֶת־פְּנֵ֖י עֵלִ֥י הַכֹּהֵֽן׃
  
  18 וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל מְשָׁרֵ֖ת אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה נַ֕עַר חָג֖וּר אֵפ֥וֹד בָּֽד׃
  
  19 וּמְעִ֤יל קָטֹן֙ תַּעֲשֶׂה־לּ֣וֹ אִמּ֔וֹ וְהַעַלְתָ֥ה ל֖וֹ מִיָּמִ֣ים ׀ יָמִ֑ימָה בַּֽעֲלוֹתָהּ֙ אֶת־אִישָׁ֔הּ לִזְבֹּ֖חַ אֶת־זֶ֥בַח הַיָּמִֽים׃
  
  20 וּבֵרַ֨ךְ עֵלִ֜י אֶת־אֶלְקָנָ֣ה וְאֶת־אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וְאָמַר֙ יָשֵׂם֩ יְהוָ֨ה לְךָ֥ זֶ֙רַע֙ מִן־הָאִשָּׁ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את תַּ֚חַת הַשְּׁאֵלָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁאַ֖ל לַֽיהוָ֑ה וְהָלְכ֖וּ לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃
  
  21 כִּֽי־פָקַ֤ד יְהוָה֙ אֶת־חַנָּ֔ה וַתַּ֛הַר וַתֵּ֥לֶד שְׁלֹשָֽׁה־בָנִ֖ים וּשְׁתֵּ֣י בָנ֑וֹת וַיִּגְדַּ֛ל הַנַּ֥עַר שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל עִם־יְהוָֽה׃

  1 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite:
  
  2 and he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
  
  3 This man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice to Yahweh of Armies in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to Yahweh, were there.
  
  4 When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:
  
  5 but to Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but Yahweh had shut up her womb.
  
  6 Her rival provoked her severely, to make her fret, because Yahweh had shut up her womb.
  
  7 As he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of Yahweh, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and didn't eat.
  
  8 Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why don't you eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?"
  
  9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat by the doorpost of Yahweh's temple.
  
  10 She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to Yahweh, and wept bitterly.
  
  11 She vowed a vow, and said, "Yahweh of Armies, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your handmaid, and remember me, and not forget your handmaid, but will give to your handmaid a boy, then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head."
  
  12 It happened, as she continued praying before Yahweh, that Eli saw her mouth.
  
  13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart. Only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.
  
  14 Eli said to her, "How long will you be drunken? Put away your wine from you."
  
  15 Hannah answered, "No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I poured out my soul before Yahweh.
  
  16 Don't count your handmaid for a wicked woman; for I have been speaking out of the abundance of my complaint and my provocation."
  
  17 Then Eli answered, "Go in peace; and may the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of him."
  
  18 She said, "Let your handmaid find favor in your sight." So the woman went her way, and ate; and her facial expression wasn't sad any more.
  
  19 They rose up in the morning early, and worshiped before Yahweh, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and Yahweh remembered her.
  
  20 It happened, when the time had come, that Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, "Because I have asked him of Yahweh."
  
  21 The man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to Yahweh the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.
  
  22 But Hannah didn't go up; for she said to her husband, "Not until the child is weaned; then I will bring him, that he may appear before Yahweh, and stay there forever."
  
  23 Elkanah her husband said to her, "Do what seems good to you. Wait until you have weaned him; only may Yahweh establish his word." So the woman waited and nursed her son, until she weaned him.
  
  24 When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, and one ephah of meal, and a bottle of wine, and brought him to Yahweh's house in Shiloh. The child was young.
  
  25 They killed the bull, and brought the child to Eli.
  
  26 She said, "Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to Yahweh.
  
  27 For this child I prayed; and Yahweh has given me my petition which I asked of him.
  
  28 Therefore also I have granted him to Yahweh. As long as he lives he is granted to Yahweh." He worshiped Yahweh there.
  
  1 Samuel 2
  
  1 Hannah prayed, and said: "My heart exults in Yahweh! My horn is exalted in Yahweh. My mouth is enlarged over my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation.
  
  2 There is no one as holy as Yahweh, For there is no one besides you, nor is there any rock like our God.
  
  3 "Talk no more so exceeding proudly. Don't let arrogance come out of your mouth, For Yahweh is a God of knowledge. By him actions are weighed.
  
  4 "The bows of the mighty men are broken. Those who stumbled are armed with strength.
  
  5 Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread. Those who were hungry are satisfied. Yes, the barren has borne seven. She who has many children languishes.
  
  6 "Yahweh kills, and makes alive. He brings down to Sheol , and brings up.
  
  7 Yahweh makes poor, and makes rich. He brings low, he also lifts up.
  
  8 He raises up the poor out of the dust. He lifts up the needy from the dunghill, To make them sit with princes, and inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are Yahweh's. He has set the world on them.
  
  9 He will keep the feet of his holy ones, but the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness; for no man shall prevail by strength.
  
  10 Those who strive with Yahweh shall be broken to pieces. He will thunder against them in the sky. "Yahweh will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed."
  
  11 Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. The child served Yahweh before Eli the priest.
  
  18 But Samuel ministered before Yahweh, being a child, clothed with a linen ephod.
  
  19 Moreover his mother made him a little robe, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
  
  20 Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, "Yahweh give you seed of this woman for the petition which was asked of Yahweh." They went to their own home.
  
  21 Yahweh visited Hannah, and she conceived, and bore three sons and two daughters. The child Samuel grew before Yahweh.

  4 Le jour où Elkana offrait son sacrifice, il donnait des portions à Peninna, sa femme, et à tous les fils et à toutes les filles qu'il avait d'elle.
  
  5 Mais il donnait à Anne une portion double ; car il aimait Anne, que l'Éternel avait rendue stérile.
  
  6 Sa rivale lui prodiguait les mortifications, pour la porter à s'irriter de ce que l'Éternel l'avait rendue stérile.
  
  7 Et toutes les années il en était ainsi. Chaque fois qu'Anne montait à la maison de l'Éternel, Peninna la mortifiait de la même manière. Alors elle pleurait et ne mangeait point.
  
  8 Elkana, son mari, lui disait : Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu, et ne manges-tu pas ? pourquoi ton coeur est-il attristé ? Est-ce que je ne vaux pas pour toi mieux que dix fils ?
  
  9 Anne se leva, après que l'on eut mangé et bu à Silo. Le sacrificateur Éli était assis sur un siège, près de l'un des poteaux du temple de l'Éternel.
  
  10 Et, l'amertume dans l'âme, elle pria l'Éternel et versa des pleurs.
  
  11 Elle fit un voeu, en disant : Éternel des armées ! si tu daignes regarder l'affliction de ta servante, si tu te souviens de moi et n'oublies point ta servante, et si tu donnes à ta servante un enfant mâle, je le consacrerai à l'Éternel pour tous les jours de sa vie, et le rasoir ne passera point sur sa tête.
  
  12 Comme elle restait longtemps en prière devant l'Éternel, Éli observa sa bouche.
  
  13 Anne parlait dans son coeur, et ne faisait que remuer les lèvres, mais on n'entendait point sa voix. Éli pensa qu'elle était ivre,
  
  14 et il lui dit : Jusques à quand seras-tu dans l'ivresse ? Fais passer ton vin.
  
  15 Anne répondit : Non, mon seigneur, je suis une femme qui souffre en son coeur, et je n'ai bu ni vin ni boisson enivrante ; mais je répandais mon âme devant l'Éternel.
  
  16 Ne prends pas ta servante pour une femme pervertie, car c'est l'excès de ma douleur et de mon chagrin qui m'a fait parler jusqu'à présent.
  
  17 Éli reprit la parole, et dit : Va en paix, et que le Dieu d'Israël exauce la prière que tu lui as adressée !
  
  18 Elle dit : Que ta servante trouve grâce à tes yeux ! Et cette femme s'en alla. Elle mangea, et son visage ne fut plus le même.
  
  19 Ils se levèrent de bon matin, et après s'être prosternés devant l'Éternel, ils s'en retournèrent et revinrent dans leur maison à Rama. Elkana connut Anne, sa femme, et l'Éternel se souvint d'elle.
  
  20 Dans le cours de l'année, Anne devint enceinte, et elle enfanta un fils, qu'elle nomma Samuel, car, dit-elle, je l'ai demandé à l'Éternel.
  
  21 Son mari Elkana monta ensuite avec toute sa maison, pour offrir à l'Éternel le sacrifice annuel, et pour accomplir son voeu.
  
  22 Mais Anne ne monta point, et elle dit à son mari : Lorsque l'enfant sera sevré, je le mènerai, afin qu'il soit présenté devant l'Éternel et qu'il reste là pour toujours.
  
  23 Elkana, son mari, lui dit : Fais ce qui te semblera bon, attends de l'avoir sevré. Veuille seulement l'Éternel accomplir sa parole ! Et la femme resta et allaita son fils, jusqu'à ce qu'elle le sevrât.
  
  24 Quand elle l'eut sevré, elle le fit monter avec elle, et prit trois taureaux, un épha de farine, et une outre de vin. Elle le mena dans la maison de l'Éternel à Silo : l'enfant était encore tout jeune.
  
  25 Ils égorgèrent les taureaux, et ils conduisirent l'enfant à Éli.
  
  26 Anne dit : Mon seigneur, pardon ! aussi vrai que ton âme vit, mon seigneur, je suis cette femme qui me tenais ici près de toi pour prier l'Éternel.
  
  27 C'était pour cet enfant que je priais, et l'Éternel a exaucé la prière que je lui adressais.
  
  28 Aussi je veux le prêter à l'Éternel : il sera toute sa vie prêté à l'Éternel. Et ils se prosternèrent là devant l'Éternel.
  
  1 Samuel 2
  
  1 Anne pria, et dit : Mon coeur se réjouit en l'Éternel, Ma force a été relevée par l'Éternel ; Ma bouche s'est ouverte contre mes ennemis, Car je me réjouis de ton secours.
  
  2 Nul n'est saint comme l'Éternel ; Il n'y a point d'autre Dieu que toi ; Il n'y a point de rocher comme notre Dieu.
  
  3 Ne parlez plus avec tant de hauteur ; Que l'arrogance ne sorte plus de votre bouche ; Car l'Éternel est un Dieu qui sait tout, Et par lui sont pesées toutes les actions.
  
  4 L'arc des puissants est brisé, Et les faibles ont la force pour ceinture.
  
  5 Ceux qui étaient rassasiés se louent pour du pain, Et ceux qui étaient affamés se reposent ; Même la stérile enfante sept fois, Et celle qui avait beaucoup d'enfants est flétrie.
  
  6 L'Éternel fait mourir et il fait vivre. Il fait descendre au séjour des morts et il en fait remonter.
  
  7 L'Éternel appauvrit et il enrichit, Il abaisse et il élève.
  
  8 De la poussière il retire le pauvre, Du fumier il relève l'indigent, Pour les faire asseoir avec les grands. Et il leur donne en partage un trône de gloire ; Car à l'Éternel sont les colonnes de la terre, Et c'est sur elles qu'il a posé le monde.
  
  9 Il gardera les pas de ses bien-aimés. Mais les méchants seront anéantis dans les ténèbres ; Car l'homme ne triomphera point par la force.
  
  10 Les ennemis de l'Éternel trembleront ; Du haut des cieux il lancera sur eux son tonnerre ; L'Éternel jugera les extrémités de la terre. Il donnera la puissance à son roi, Et il relèvera la force de son oint.
  
  11 Elkana s'en alla dans sa maison à Rama, et l'enfant fut au service de l'Éternel devant le sacrificateur Éli.
  
  18 Samuel faisait le service devant l'Éternel, et cet enfant était revêtu d'un éphod de lin.
  
  19 Sa mère lui faisait chaque année une petite robe, et la lui apportait en montant avec son mari pour offrir le sacrifice annuel.
  
  20 Éli bénit Elkana et sa femme, en disant : Que l'Éternel te fasse avoir des enfants de cette femme, pour remplacer celui qu'elle a prêté à l'Éternel ! Et ils s'en retournèrent chez eux.
  
  21 Lorsque l'Éternel eut visité Anne, elle devint enceinte, et elle enfanta trois fils et deux filles. Et le jeune Samuel grandissait auprès de l'Éternel.
