    • Exode 18

      1

      Jéthro, accompagné de la femme et des deux fils de Moïse, rencontre ce dernier. (Exode 18:1-6)
      Moïse partage un repas avec Jéthro. (Exode 18:7-12)
      Jéthro conseille Moïse. (Exode 18:13-27)

      Jéthro, accompagné de la femme et des enfants de Moïse, rencontre ce dernier et partage sa joie, concernant les dernières nouvelles du peuple d'Israël. Moïse devait garder sa famille à ses côtés, en vue d'être un bon exemple aux yeux du peuple, quant à la conduite de sa maison, 1Ti 3:5.
      7 Les conversations relatant les merveilles divines sont toujours bonnes et édifiantes. Jéthro ne s'est pas réjoui uniquement de l'honneur acquis par son gendre, mais aussi de toutes les bontés que Dieu a accordées au peuple d'Israël. Les témoins de ces faveurs divines étaient plus touchés que les Hébreux eux-mêmes, pourtant bénéficiaires directs. Jéthro rendit gloire au Dieu d'Israël. Quelle que soit la joie qui nous anime, Dieu doit être le premier objet de notre louange.

      Les deux patriarches offrirent conjointement un sacrifice de reconnaissance. L'amitié mutuelle est sanctifiée par l'adoration commune. Il est vraiment profitable à ceux qui entretiennent des relations amicales, de se réunir sous le regard de Christ, afin d'offrir un sacrifice spirituel, de prière et de louange. Dans ce texte, le festin en question était relativement modeste : ils consommèrent du pain et de la manne. Jéthro devait goûter à ce pain descendant du ciel ; en tant que « gentil », il était le bienvenu à ce repas : les « gentils » sont également les bienvenus en Christ, le pain de vie.

      13 Nous voyons ici tout le zèle et le dur labeur qu'avait Moïse, dans son rôle de magistrat. Ayant fait sortir Israël de la maison de servitude, il est en quelque sorte, une image de Christ : il légiférait et réglait, en tant que juge, les affaires du peuple. Si parmi les enfants d'Israël, certains se querellaient, malgré le fait qu'ils étaient directement sous le regard de Dieu, il ne fait aucun doute que l'affaire finissait par remonter jusqu'à Moïse, qui réglait le différend, ne faisant en cela, que remplir le rôle pour lequel il avait été appelé. Il apparaît qu'il assumait soigneusement cette tâche, avec zèle. Même le plus misérable des israélites était accueilli favorablement, afin de pouvoir plaider sa cause devant le patriarche. Ce dernier s'adonnait à cette tâche du matin jusqu'au soir. En conséquence, Jéthro pensait que c'était trop de travail sur les épaules d'un seul homme. Moïse devait aussi régler auprès du peuple, les affaires de justice les plus ennuyeuses.

      Même dans l'exercice du bien, on assume parfois trop de travail ! Il est bon de faire preuve de sagesse lorsqu'on dirige des affaires, de façon à exercer au moins ce que nous dicte notre devoir, sans aller au-delà de nos forces. C'est pourquoi Jéthro suggéra à Moïse une meilleure stratégie.

      Les grands responsables ne doivent pas uniquement être attentifs à accomplir leurs tâches, ils doivent aussi savoir les déléguer aux autres, pour valoriser ces derniers. Un grand soin doit être pris, dans le choix de telles personnes. Elles doivent faire preuve de bon sens, être aptes à comprendre les différentes affaires, être non sujettes à mauvaise réputation, ni à la corruption. Il en va de même pour les hommes qui veulent exercer la piété et le ministère religieux ; ils doivent craindre Dieu, accomplir leur devoir aux yeux de tous, sans cacher quoi que ce soit. La crainte de Dieu fortifiera l'homme soumis à la tentation, à l'injustice. Moïse n'a pas dédaigné le conseil de son beau-père. Il n'y a que les insensés qui refusent constamment de suivre le conseil des autres !

    • Exode 18

      1 Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, how that Yahweh had brought Israel out of Egypt.
      2 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, received Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her away,
      3 and her two sons. The name of one son was Gershom, for Moses said, "I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land".
      4 The name of the other was Eliezer, for he said, "My father's God was my help and delivered me from Pharaoh's sword."
      5 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses into the wilderness where he was encamped, at the Mountain of God.
      6 He said to Moses, "I, your father-in-law Jethro, have come to you with your wife, and her two sons with her."
      7 Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed and kissed him. They asked each other of their welfare, and they came into the tent.
      8 Moses told his father-in-law all that Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the hardships that had come on them on the way, and how Yahweh delivered them.
      9 Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which Yahweh had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.
      10 Jethro said, "Blessed be Yahweh, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.
      11 Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all gods because of the thing in which they dealt arrogantly against them."
      12 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God. Aaron came with all of the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law before God.
      13 It happened on the next day, that Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from the morning to the evening.
      14 When Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, "What is this thing that you do for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning to evening?"
      15 Moses said to his father-in-law, "Because the people come to me to inquire of God.
      16 When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and his laws."
      17 Moses' father-in-law said to him, "The thing that you do is not good.
      18 You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone.
      19 Listen now to my voice. I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You represent the people before God, and bring the causes to God.
      20 You shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.
      21 Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
      22 Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you.
      23 If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all of these people also will go to their place in peace."
      24 So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said.
      25 Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
      26 They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard causes to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.
      27 Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way into his own land.

      3 וְאֵ֖ת שְׁנֵ֣י בָנֶ֑יהָ אֲשֶׁ֨ר שֵׁ֤ם הָֽאֶחָד֙ גֵּֽרְשֹׁ֔ם כִּ֣י אָמַ֔ר גֵּ֣ר הָיִ֔יתִי בְּאֶ֖רֶץ נָכְרִיָּֽה׃

      12 וַיִּקַּ֞ח יִתְר֨וֹ חֹתֵ֥ן מֹשֶׁ֛ה עֹלָ֥ה וּזְבָחִ֖ים לֵֽאלֹהִ֑ים וַיָּבֹ֨א אַהֲרֹ֜ן וְכֹ֣ל ׀ זִקְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל לֶאֱכָל־לֶ֛חֶם עִם־חֹתֵ֥ן מֹשֶׁ֖ה לִפְנֵ֥י הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃
      13 וַיְהִי֙ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב מֹשֶׁ֖ה לִשְׁפֹּ֣ט אֶת־הָעָ֑ם וַיַּעֲמֹ֤ד הָעָם֙ עַל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה מִן־הַבֹּ֖קֶר עַד־הָעָֽרֶב׃

      19 עַתָּ֞ה שְׁמַ֤ע בְּקֹלִי֙ אִיעָ֣צְךָ֔ וִיהִ֥י אֱלֹהִ֖ים עִמָּ֑ךְ הֱיֵ֧ה אַתָּ֣ה לָעָ֗ם מ֚וּל הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים וְהֵבֵאתָ֥ אַתָּ֛ה אֶת־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים אֶל־הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃
      20 וְהִזְהַרְתָּ֣ה אֶתְהֶ֔ם אֶת־הַחֻקִּ֖ים וְאֶת־הַתּוֹרֹ֑ת וְהוֹדַעְתָּ֣ לָהֶ֗ם אֶת־הַדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ יֵ֣לְכוּ בָ֔הּ וְאֶת־הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר יַעֲשֽׂוּן׃
      21 וְאַתָּ֣ה תֶחֱזֶ֣ה מִכָּל־הָ֠עָם אַנְשֵׁי־חַ֜יִל יִרְאֵ֧י אֱלֹהִ֛ים אַנְשֵׁ֥י אֱמֶ֖ת שֹׂ֣נְאֵי בָ֑צַע וְשַׂמְתָּ֣ עֲלֵהֶ֗ם שָׂרֵ֤י אֲלָפִים֙ שָׂרֵ֣י מֵא֔וֹת שָׂרֵ֥י חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים וְשָׂרֵ֥י עֲשָׂרֹֽת׃
      22 וְשָׁפְט֣וּ אֶת־הָעָם֮ בְּכָל־עֵת֒ וְהָיָ֞ה כָּל־הַדָּבָ֤ר הַגָּדֹל֙ יָבִ֣יאוּ אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְכָל־הַדָּבָ֥ר הַקָּטֹ֖ן יִשְׁפְּטוּ־הֵ֑ם וְהָקֵל֙ מֵֽעָלֶ֔יךָ וְנָשְׂא֖וּ אִתָּֽךְ׃
