World English Bible The night is far gone, and the day is near. Let's therefore throw off the works of darkness, and let's put on the armor of light.

La nuit, c'est le temps qui doit s'écouler encore jusqu'au retour glorieux du Christ. Ce retour est comparé au lever du soleil.

Sans doute, par la première venue du Christ, la lumière a déjà lui dans les ténèbres, mais "les ténèbres ne l'ont pas reçue" (Jean 1.5,9 ; comparez Luc 1.78,79).

L'état dans lequel l'humanité est plongée encore aujourd'hui est bien la nuit, même là où le message de l'Evangile retentit depuis longtemps Cette image, qu'il ne faut d'ailleurs pas trop presser, correspond à celle du "sommeil" (v 11) qui, elle non plus, ne doit être prise dans un sens absolu. (1Thessaloniciens 5.4-8 ; Ephésiens 5.8-14)

Et voici la conclusion pratique à tirer de cette situation : Dépouillons-nous donc des œuvres des ténèbres et revêtons les armes de la lumière.

Le péché et ses mille convoitises se trahissent comme œuvres de ténèbres déjà en ce que, littéralement ils fuient la lumière du jour. (Ephésiens 5.11) D'autre part, l'approche du jour invite le soldat à revêtir ses armes pour recommencer la lutte.

Le mot que nous traduisons par armes signifie aussi "instruments." Mais, d'après 1Thessaloniciens 5.8 ; Ephésiens 6.10-18, Paul lui donne plutôt le premier sens.
