Cette expression : attendre l'espĂ©rance paraĂźt contradictoire en soi, et d'ailleurs, l'espĂ©rance, les chrĂ©tiens l'ont dĂ©jĂ . Mais elle devient claire si l'on observe que ce mot espĂ©rance est souvent employĂ© pour l'objet de l'espĂ©rance, que Paul dĂ©signe ici lui-mĂȘme "comme l'apparition de JĂ©sus-Christ." (Comparer Actes 24.15 ; Galates 5.5 ; Colossiens 1.5 ; Romains 8.24)

- Paul appelle bienheureuse cette espérance, parce qu'elle embrasse à l'avance toutes les félicités de la vie éternelle.

Le sens de ces derniĂšres paroles peut ĂȘtre sujet Ă  quelque doute. Nous traduisons : l'apparition de la gloire de notre grand Dieu et Sauveur JĂ©sus-Christ, et non : "du grand Dieu et de notre Sauveur JĂ©sus-Christ," comme le font plusieurs, parce que cette premiĂšre version est plus conforme au texte grec. (Comparer Romains 9.5 note)

Toutefois, le sens de nos versions ordinaires est possible, quoique peu probable. Du reste, cette question que ni la grammaire ni la dogmatique ne décident d'une maniÚre absolue, se présente fréquemment en des passages tels que les suivants : 2Pierre 1.1 ; Jude 4 ; 2Thessaloniciens 1.12.

Et si mĂȘme dans les paroles qui nous occupent ici on voulait faire une distinction entre le grand Dieu et le Sauveur JĂ©sus-Christ, ce texte n'en serait pas moins une preuve directe de la divinitĂ© de Christ, puisque la gloire de Dieu est sa gloire.

- La position du chrĂ©tien ici-bas est en Ă©tat d'attente : l'Eglise attend l'apparition de son Sauveur, qui sera aussi glorieuse pour le Seigneur lui-mĂȘme et pour ses rachetĂ©s que sa premiĂšre apparition avait Ă©tĂ© humble et remplie d'opprobres et de souffrances. (Comparer Philippiens 3.20,21)

Cette pensée, cette attente habituelle est tout ce qu'il y a de plus propre à détruire en nous "les convoitises mondaines," et à y développer la vie chrétienne et sainte dont l'apÎtre vient de retracer les principaux caractÚres. ( 2.12)
