1 à 12 La dévastation de la face de la terre.

Dépeupler, vider. Comparez les mêmes expressions appliquées à la ruine de Ninive, Nahum 2.10.

La terre. Plusieurs entendent par là le pays de Canaan. Mais au verset 4 le même mot est employé comme synonyme de monde, et au verset 13 il est pris évidemment dans un sens universel. Nous croyons donc qu'il s'agit ici d'un jugement tout à fait général, et non d'un événement propre à la Palestine.

Bouleversera, proprement retournera, comme on retourne un vase pour le vider entièrement.

Tous ceux qui se vantent ici-bas de leurs trésors et de leur prospérité, finissent tôt ou tard par être dans le besoin et la misère. En ce qui nous concerne, il est bon de garder à l'esprit, ce que l'Écriture mentionne dans ce texte, au sujet de la vanité et de tout ce qui en découle. Le péché a amené le chaos ici-bas : la terre est devenue pour l'homme, tout à fait différente de ce qu'elle était à l'origine, quand Dieu l'a conçue, pour héberger les humains. Elle est, en quelque sorte, comme une fleur qui se défraîchit dans les mains de ceux qui la possèdent, et qui désirent la porter comme une parure.

Le monde dans lequel nous vivons, est un monde de déception, une « vallée des larmes » ; les hommes qui l'habitent n'y sont que pour peu de jours, étant confrontés à différentes épreuves. Remarquez la puissance de la malédiction divine, à quel point elle est capable d'apporter la dévastation et la désolation ici-bas ! Le péché est la cause de toutes ces calamités ; la terre est polluée par l'iniquité des hommes, et doit, en conséquence, subir les Jugements divins à ce sujet.

Les joies « de la chair » auront inexorablement une fin, une fin lourde de conséquences. Dieu dispose de nombreux moyens pour rendre le vin et la boisson forte, « amers », à ceux qui les aiment ; Il peut les frapper par la maladie, l'angoisse, et la ruine, ce qui donnera de l'amertume à tous leurs plaisirs, en rendant toutes leurs joies insipides.

Que les hommes apprennent à fuir le péché, pour se réjouir en Dieu ; personne, voire aucun événement, ne pourra alors leur ravir cette félicité !
