En effet, à l’époque d’Ézékias, roi de Juda, les chefs qui viennent d’être mentionnés arrivèrent dans cette région, détruisirent les tentes et les abris où demeuraient les descendants de Cham et exterminèrent la population, dont on ne trouve plus trace aujourd’hui. Ensuite ils s’installèrent à leur place, puisqu’il y avait là des pâturages pour leurs moutons.

Certains membres de la tribu de Siméon, au nombre de cinq cents, gagnèrent la région montagneuse d’Édom sous la conduite des quatre fils d’Ichéi, Pelatia, Néaria, Refaya et Ouziel.

Le nom de Jabets est expliqué par le rapprochement avec le nom de douleur :otsev, (avec transposition des lettres). Jabets, faisant allusion à son nom, demande à Dieu que ce nom ne soit pas de mauvais augure pour lui. Vers la fin du verset 10 la phrase reste suspendue, comme souvent dans les vœux et les serments. Cette notice a sans doute été empruntée à un récit plus étendu.
