C’est pourquoi, je me suis présenté à vous faible et tout tremblant de crainte ;

Ces deux mots crainte et tremblement expriment souvent, dans les lettres de Paul, une profonde et religieuse vénération. (2Corinthiens 7.15 ; Philippiens 2.12 ; Ephésiens 6.5)

Quant à la faiblesse dont il parle ici, on a voulu y voir soit des épreuves intérieures, soit des infirmités corporelles ; (Galates 4.13,14 ; 2Corinthiens 12.7) c'est surtout le sentiment accablant de la sainteté et de la grandeur de sa tâche, qui, dans une ville où il s'attendait à tant de résistance, semble avoir intimidé Paul à son arrivée à Corinthe. (Comparer 2Corinthiens 10.1,10 ; Actes 18.9,10)

Son action y avait formé un contraste bien frappant avec la bruyante hardiesse des sophistes et des chefs d'école dans les grandes villes de la Grèce et même avec la haute éloquence d'un Apollos. Mais ce qui était pour l'apôtre un opprobre aux yeux du monde, Dieu en tira sa gloire et la confirmation de son Evangile, en accomplissant de si grandes choses par un si faible instrument.
