Le Seigneur avait conféré à ses apôtres, fondateurs de son Eglise, l'autorité d'y admettre ou d'en exclure, selon le discernement que leur donnait l'Esprit.

Aller avec la verge à Corinthe, c'était, de la part de Paul, y paraître en juge sévère, qui pouvait excommunier les membres indignes du troupeau, quoiqu'il ne désirât rien plus que d'y venir avec amour et dans un esprit de douceur.

Ceci le conduit à parler de l'affaire de l'incestueux, (1Corinthiens 6) dans laquelle, quoique absent, il exerce réellement son autorité par l'excommunication.
