Ces trois questions doivent fermer la bouche à quiconque est enflé d'orgueil : il est possible que tu sois distingué par divers dons ; mais tu les as tous reçus ; si donc tu t'en glorifies, tu offenses Dieu, le souverain Donateur.

Rien ne peut nous permettre d'exhiber une quelconque fierté : tout ce que nous avons, tout ce que nous sommes ou pouvons entreprendre de bon, provient de la Grâce merveilleuse de Dieu.

Tout pécheur, animé de ses dons spirituels, par la Grâce souveraine, ressentant une quelconque fierté d’être sorti de la destruction, serait vraiment absurde et inconsistant.

Paul expose son propre cas, au verset 1 Corinthiens 4:9. Il fait allusion aux spectacles cruels des jeux romains, où des hommes étaient forcés de tailler en pièces leurs adversaires pour divertir le peuple ; le vainqueur n'avait pas d’ailleurs la vie sauve, même en tuant son adversaire : il était simplement en sursis, réservé pour un autre combat, et devait finalement être tué.

Le fait de savoir que beaucoup de regards sont braqués sur les croyants, lorsqu'ils sont assaillis par l’épreuve ou la tentation, doit encourager leur persévérance et leur patience. « Nous sommes faibles, mais vous êtes forts », au verset 1 Corinthiens 4:10. Tous les chrétiens ne sont pas éprouvés de la même façon : certains subissent de plus grandes épreuves que d'autres. Dans ce texte, l'apôtre entre dans les détails de ces souffrances. On peut féliciter de telles âmes, pour leur amour et leur dévouement envers le Seigneur, sentiments qui les ont portés au travers de toutes leurs épreuves ! Ces hommes ont souffert corporellement et moralement, étant considérés comme les plus vils individus ; ils ont été mis au rebut, tels des immondices.

Celui qui veut rester fidèle en Jésus-Christ, doit se préparer à connaître la pauvreté et le mépris. Quelles que soient les souffrances que les disciples de Christ puissent endurer, ils doivent suivre l'exemple du Seigneur, accomplir Sa volonté et respecter Ses préceptes. Ils doivent se réjouir, avec Lui, pour sa Gloire, même s’ils sont méprisés et abusés ici-bas.

Il vaut bien mieux être repoussé, méprisé, et maltraité pour le Seigneur, comme ce fut le cas de Paul, plutôt que d'avoir la faveur des foules. Bien que parfois rejetés par le monde, tels de vils personnages, nous sommes cependant précieux aux yeux du Seigneur : Il nous a recueillis de Sa propre main, et préparé une place dans Son Royaume !
