1 Corinthiens 6.11

Voilà bien ce que vous étiez autrefois, du moins, certains d’entre vous. Mais vous avez été lavés et, à présent, vous êtes consacrés à Dieu et vous avez été purifiés, vous avez été acquittés de vos fautes et déclarés justes au nom du Seigneur Jésus-Christ et par l’Esprit de notre Dieu.

World English Bible Such were some of you, but you were washed. But you were sanctified. But you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and in the Spirit of our God.

Vous étiez cela, dit l'apôtre littéralement : puis, par ménagement pour ses lecteurs, et ne voulant pas supposer que tous eussent vécu dans ces vices grossiers, il ajoute : quelques-uns de vous. Mais cette précaution de sa charité n'en dit pas moins clairement qu'aucun n'en était entièrement pur avant sa conversion.

Le mot lavés exprime la purification intérieure, dont l'eau du baptême avait été le signe lors de leur conversion et de leur admission dans l'Eglise ; sanctifiés indique la continuation de cette œuvre par l'Esprit de Dieu, et la consécration du cœur et de la vie à Dieu ; justifiés désigne cet acte de la grâce divine qui s'accomplit objectivement par le sacrifice de Jésus-Christ, et subjectivement dans le pécheur au moment où il croit d'une foi vivante au Sauveur.

Dans ces paroles qui rappellent l'état naturel du pécheur et toute l'œuvre de son salut, se trouvent les plus puissants motifs d'humilité, d'une part, et d'autre part, de persévérance : lavés, comment retourneriez-vous à vos souillures ? sanctifiés, vous allez poursuivre, dans tous les replis de votre cœur, jusqu'aux derniers restes de votre corruption naturelle ; justifiés, ne trembleriez-vous pas d'attirer sur votre conscience de nouvelles condamnations ?

- Les mots : au nom du Seigneur Jésus et par l'Esprit de notre Dieu, s'appliquent également à ces trois phases du salut en l'homme : Jésus (dont le nom indique tout l'être, toute l'œuvre) est le seul Médiateur des grâces de Dieu, depuis la première à la dernière ; et le SaintEsprit rend seul vivant et réel en nous tout ce que Christ a fait pour nous sauver ; il nous unit à Jésus, et ainsi nous revêt de sa justice et de sa vie divine.
