Dans ce texte, les Corinthiens sont mis en garde contre les nombreux péchés, dont ils étaient autrefois coupables. Le réquisitoire de Paul, sur ce sujet, est très virulent, si nous considérons qu’il était adressé à des personnes fières de leur sagesse et de leurs connaissances.

Toute perversité est un péché ; tout péché qui demeure, étant commis délibérément et sans repentir, ferme la porte du Royaume des cieux. Ne vous y trompez pas : beaucoup de personnes sont très enclines à se vanter de pouvoir vivre dans le péché, tout en étant « mortes en Christ », annonçant avec arrogance, pouvoir cependant aller au ciel. Nous ne pouvons pas espérer vivre « selon la chair », et jouir plus tard, de la vie éternelle.

Paul rappelle aux Corinthiens, quels ont été les changements que l'Évangile et la Grâce de Dieu ont opéré sur eux. Le sang de Christ, et la purification de la régénération, peuvent effacer toute culpabilité. Notre justification est due à la souffrance et au mérite de Christ ; notre sanctification provient de l'œuvre du Saint-Esprit ; toutes deux vont de pair. Tous les sanctifiés, aux yeux du Seigneur, le sont par Sa Grâce !
