1 Corinthiens 7.19

La Circoncision n'est rien, et le prépuce aussi n'est rien, mais l'observation des commandements de Dieu.
Être circoncis, cela ne signifie rien. Ne pas être circoncis, cela ne signifie rien non plus. Ce qui est important, c’est de faire ce que Dieu commande.

Paul n'a point l'intention de traiter ici de la circoncision ni de l'esclavage, (verset 21) mais il cherche simplement par ces exemples à rendre plus clairs et plus complets les principes qu'il a énoncés relativement au mariage. Dès que l'accomplissement de la loi a eu lieu par Jésus-Christ, (Matthieu 5.17, note) toutes les figures de l'ancienne alliance, qui avaient, pour un temps, une grande importance, deviennent inutiles : telle est la circoncision.

- Ce principe élevé et spirituel n'a pénétré qu'à grand-peine dans l'Eglise chrétienne. (Actes 11.2 et suivants ; Actes 15.1 et suivants)
