Si aimer, c'est se donner, Dieu a aimé de cette manière quand il nous a donné cet autre lui même, son Fils unique. Par ce don, son amour a été manifesté, il l'a été en nous (Weiss), car pour le connaître parfaitement, il ne suffit pas de considérer l'apparition historique du Fils ; il faut que l'Esprit le glorifie en nous. (Jean 16.14 ; Galates 1.16)
C'est ce qu'indique aussi le verbe au parfait qui exprime une manifestation permanente.
D'autres traduisent : parmi nous. La traduction : son amour envers nous doit être rejetée.
Pourquoi cette manifestation de l'amour de Dieu par l'envoi du Fils dans le monde ? Afin que nous vivions par lui, qui est la vie. (Comparer Jean 3.16)
Mais ce n'est pas tout : ceux que Dieu a ainsi aimés l'avaient-ils prévenu par leur amour ? Nullement ; ce n'est pas nous qui avons aimé Dieu. En étaient-ils dignes du moins par leur sainteté ? Bien moins encore : Dieu a dû envoyer son Fils comme propitiation pour nos péchés ; ces péchés faisaient de l'homme un être opposé à la nature du Dieu qui est lumière. De sorte que non seulement l'amour de Dieu est tout à fait gratuit, non mérité, mais que, pour nous rendre capables de le comprendre et d'y répondre, il a fallu le profond mystère de propitiation (même terme que 1Jean 2.2), nouvelle et insondable manifestation de l'amour de Dieu.
- Sous une forme différente, ces pensées sont en parfaite harmonie avec celles que Paul expose Romains 5.6-10.
