To them it was revealed, that not to themselves, but to you, they ministered these things, which now have been announced to you through those who preached the Good News to you by the Holy Spirit sent out from heaven; which things angels desire to look into.

Il fut révélé aux prophètes (l'apôtre ne dit pas comment, mais on peut en voir un exemple dans Daniel 12.4,9,13) que ce n'était pas en leur temps que s'accompliraient ces choses (les souffrances et les gloires de Christ, verset 11) qu'ils administraient (grec servaient), comme d'humbles instruments, qu'ils annonçaient en fidèles messagers, mais qu'elles étaient pour vous, dit l'apôtre, pour les chrétiens des temps évangéliques, auxquels cette grâce était destinée. (verset 10)

Ce qui ne veut pas dire que le ministère des prophètes concernant le salut à venir fut sans utilité pour eux mêmes et pour leurs contemporains, au contraire, ils fondaient sur ce salut toute leur espérance et y puisaient toute leur consolation. Mais comment ne pas admirer l'humble renoncement de ces hommes de Dieu, qui, sachant qu'ils employaient leurs forces et enduraient tant d'épreuves pour des générations futures, n'en restaient pas moins infatigables dans leurs travaux, inébranlables dans leur foi et leur fidélité !

Les prophètes prédisaient les grands faits du salut par l'Esprit-Saint, les apôtres les ont annoncés, après leur accomplissement, par le même Esprit-Saint ; les deux économies du salut sont remplies de cet Esprit. Là est la grandeur divine de ce salut. L'Esprit-Saint est indiqué spécialement comme envoyé du ciel.

Les uns pensent qu'en ajoutant ces mots l'auteur a l'intention d'évoquer le souvenir de la Pentecôte, (Actes 2.1-4) les autres estiment qu'il fait allusion à l'action de l'Esprit qui s'exerçait partout où l'Évangile était annoncé. (Actes 8.15-17 ; 10.44 ; 19.1-7 ; 1Thessaloniciens 1.6 ; 1Corinthiens 2.4) Il reste encore un trait pour achever le tableau, le désir des anges !

Grec : désirent s'incliner pour contempler de plus près. (Voir le même mot Jacques 1.25) Peut-être une allusion aux chérubins qui s'inclinaient sur le propitiatoire, dans l'attitude de la contemplation et de l'adoration. (Exode 25.20) La grandeur divine de la rédemption est relevée à nos yeux par la part qu'y prennent les esprits purs qui n'en ont pas besoin pour euxmêmes, mais qui y apprennent à connaître la sagesse de Dieu. (Ephésiens 3.10, note)

Les anges, qui contemplent la face de Dieu (Matthieu 18.10) et sont à son service, (Hébreux 1.14) sont présents aux plus grands événements de la vie du Sauveur sur la terre (Luc 2.13,14 ; Jean 1.51 ; Matthieu 4.11 ; Luc 22.43 ; 24.4 et suivants ; Actes 1.10,11) ; ils se réjouissent de la conversion d'un pécheur, (Luc 15.10) unissent leurs chants de louange à ceux des rachetés, (Apocalypse 5.11 ; 7.11,12) s'intéressent à la rédemption par amour d'un monde perdu, et parce que cette rédemption glorifie le Dieu qu'ils servent.

"Ainsi contemplent-ils tous les jours avec grand ébahissement les œuvres magnifiques de Dieu au gouvernement de son Eglise. Combien seront-ils plus étonnés quand ils verront ce dernier et excellent acte de la justice, bonté et sapience divine, lorsque le royaume de Christ s'accomplira ?" Calvin.

Cette explication justifie la mention des anges dans notre passage. L'auteur n'a pas voulu dire que les anges désirent en vain scruter le mystère du salut, que la connaissance de la rédemption leur est refusée tandis qu'elle est accordée à ses lecteurs dont il ferait ainsi ressortir le privilège unique.
