World English Bible Then Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived in it; and he went out from there, and built Penuel.

25 à 33 Etablissement des veaux d'or à Béthel et à Dan.

Le premier soin de Jéroboam fut de fortifier ses deux frontières de l'ouest et de l'est et de choisir Sichem pour sa résidence ; plus tard, il s'établit à Thirtsa (14.17). Ces deux villes étaient fort anciennes ; bâtir signifie ici fortifier (9.17).

Pénuel : voir Genèse 32.30 et Juges 8.8. Il fallait garantir le territoire situé au-delà du Jourdain. Ce pays fut en effet un perpétuel sujet de querelles entre les deux royaumes rivaux.

Roboam s'est méfié de la Providence divine ; il voulait faire des compromis en tous genres avec le péché, pour consolider sa propre sécurité. Une telle incrédulité, face à la toute Suffisance divine, fut le point de départ de son éloignement de l'Éternel. Bien qu'il soit probable il ait voulu offrir un culte au Dieu d'Israël, c'était contraire à la loi divine, et déshonorait ainsi la Majesté de Celui qui régit toutes choses. Le peuple aurait pu être moins choqué en adorant le Dieu d'Israël, sous la forme d'une image, qu'en étant directement invité à adorer Baal ; mais le roi préparait la voie de l'idolâtrie...

« Seigneur béni, donne-nous la grâce de Te vénérer dans Ta maison, de louer Tes ordonnances, dans Ton lieu de prière, au jour de la semaine que Tu as fixé, et pas un autre, à notre convenance, comme le fit Roboam, afin que nos cœurs ne s'inclinent pas devant de quelconques idoles abominables. Seigneur, que Ton Être soit vraiment précieux pour notre âme, règne en nos cœurs, dans l'espérance de bientôt voir Ta gloire ».
