1 à 10 Prophétie contre l'autel de Béthel.

Les premiers mots de ce verset sont rattachés ordinairement au chapitre précédent.

En faisant fumer l'encens : il offrait lui-même au veau d'or l'hommage du parfum.

De Juda. Ce prophète, chargé d'un message de l'Eternel, ne venait pas d'une des tribus rebelles qui avaient accepté le joug de Jéroboam.

En menaçant l'autel, le prophète menaça également celui qui était en face de ce dernier, avec ses adorateurs. Un culte idolâtre ne subsistera jamais bien longtemps, alors que la Parole de l'Éternel durera éternellement. La prédiction de l'homme de Dieu mentionna simplement que la famille de David subsistera à jamais : elle fut, en effet, par Christ, la source de la véritable piété, quand bien même les dix tribus d'Israël se seraient écartées de l'Éternel.

Quand Dieu, dans Sa Justice, endurcit le cœur des pécheurs, de sorte qu'ils « n'ôtent pas la main » qu'ils ont tendue vers le péché, et qu'ils n'éprouvent aucun repentir, il s'agit en fait d'un jugement spirituel, ce qui est beaucoup plus redoutable. Jéroboam rechercha désormais de l'aide, non pas dans ses veaux d'or, ses propres idoles, mais en Dieu seulement, en Sa Puissance ; il rechercha Sa faveur.

Le moment peut surgir, où ceux qui ont rejeté la prédication du salut, seraient bien heureux de bénéficier des prières des fidèles serviteurs de Dieu.

Jéroboam ne voulut pas que le prophète prie, afin que son péché soit pardonné, et que son cœur change ; il voulait seulement que sa main redevienne normale. Le roi semblait pour le moment, affecté par la miséricorde et le jugement divins, mais ce n'était qu'une fausse impression. Dieu interdit à son serviteur de manger ou de boire à Béthel, afin de bien montrer Son aversion pour cette idolâtrie et l'apostasie qui en résultait ; cela nous enseigne qu'il ne faut pas avoir de liens avec les œuvres des ténèbres. Ceux qui n'ont pas appris l'abnégation, ne pourront pas s'abstenir de prendre ce genre de « repas », en compagnie des pécheurs, et interdit par Dieu.
