Il cria contre l'autel, par la parole de l'Éternel, et il dit : Autel ! autel ! ainsi parle l'Éternel : Voici, il naîtra un fils à la maison de David ; son nom sera Josias ; il immolera sur toi les prêtres des hauts lieux qui brûlent sur toi des parfums, et l'on brûlera sur toi des ossements d'hommes !

Autel, autel ! il s'adresse à l'autel comme au monument de l'impiété de Jéroboam.

Son nom est Josias. Comparez 2Rois 23.15 et suivants. Il ne nous appartient pas de tracer une limite à la révélation divine et de prétendre que Dieu n'a pas pu faire connaître le nom du roi qui devait, trois cents ans plus tard, exécuter cette menace. En soi la menace elle-même n'est pas une prophétie moins étonnante ; comparez, pour la révélation d'un nom, Actes 9.12 ; 10.5-6. Mais nous trouvons dans ce même récit, au verset 32, une expression mise dans la bouche du vieux prophète de Sichem, qui doit appartenir à un temps bien postérieur ; c'est celle-ci : les villes de Samarie, qui suppose que Samarie était déjà la capitale du pays et lui avait donné son nom. Or, ce ne fut qu'un demi-siècle plus tard qu'Omri fit de Samarie la capitale du royaume des dix tribus et s'y établit (16.24). Le récit a donc subi, en se transmettant traditionnellement, l'influence de faits arrivés plus tard. Il peut en avoir été ainsi du nom du roi Josias qui aurait été ajouté en marge, comme annotation explicative, et de là inséré dans le texte, ou ajouté en parenthèse dans le texte même, après que la prophétie avait obtenu son accomplissement.
