Et il dit : Tu sais que le royaume était à moi, et que tout Israël avait porté ses yeux sur moi pour que je fusse roi ; mais le royaume a tourné, et est passé à mon frère, car il était à lui de par l'Éternel.

He said, "You know that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign. However the kingdom is turned around, and has become my brother's; for it was his from Yahweh.

En effet, d'après le cours ordinaire des choses, il pouvait s'envisager comme l'héritier du trône, et il est probable qu'une partie du peuple l'aurait vu de bon œil succéder à son père (voir 1.5 et suivants).

Parce que l'Eternel... Cette parole montre que les ennemis mêmes de Salomon considéraient sa royauté comme le résultat d'une volonté supérieure. Cependant Adonija pense pouvoir réclamer une faible compensation.
