World English Bible The prophet came near to the king of Israel, and said to him, "Go, strengthen yourself, and mark, and see what you do; for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against you."

La sécurité orgueilleuse suit souvent une victoire inespérée. Le prophète, qui a promis celle-ci, cherche à prévenir celle-là. Achab doit se rappeler que le secours divin continue à lui être indispensable.

Les conseillers de Ben-Hadad lui recommandèrent de changer de champ de bataille. Ils étaient convaincus que ce n'était pas Israël qui les avait battus, mais les dieux des Hébreux ; en fait, ils ignoraient tout de l’Éternel !

Ils pensaient qu'Israël avait beaucoup de dieux, dotés chacun de fonctions spécifiques, dans un endroit bien particulier ; ces « Gentils » avaient en fait une bien piètre opinion de la Puissance divine.

La plus grande sagesse dans les affaires du monde, est souvent mêlée à une folie méprisable, quant à l'opinion sur les attributs divins.
