15 à 28 Constructions diverses au moyen de corvées ; équipement d'une flotte.

Avant d'énumérer les nouvelles constructions de Salomon, l'auteur explique ce qui les rendit possibles : ce fut la présence dans le pays de populations cananéennes qu'il réduisit à la condition de serfs corvéables. En même temps l'auteur tient à montrer la différence que mit Salomon entre la manière dont il traita son propre peuple et le traitement qu'il appliqua à ces populations étrangères.

Millo : voir Juges 9.6 ; 2Samuel 5.9, notes. Ce n'était pas seulement un grand remblai ; ce remblai, qui fermait la vallée du Tyropéon et protégeait la ville haute, portait une forteresse.

La muraille de Jérusalem. Cette muraille devait envelopper toute la ville, y compris la montagne du temple, tandis que jusqu'alors la cité de David était seule entourée d'une enceinte fortifiée (1Rois 3.1).

Hatsor, ville de Nephthali. commandant la frontière septentrionale du pays (Josué 11.1).

Méguiddo (1Rois 4.12), entre le mont Thabor et la baie de Saint-Jean d'Acre ; protégeant la route qui allait de la mer à la plaine du Jourdain.

Guézer, ville cananéenne, à la frontière sud d'Ephraïm (Josué 10.33) ; dominant, comme Beth-Horon, l'entrée des défilés par lesquels on avait directement accès de la plaine maritime au plateau de Juda et Jérusalem. Guézer et Beth-Horon étaient la clef du sud du pays, comme Hatsor celle du nord et Méguiddo celle du centre. Salomon s'appliquait à entourer son royaume d'une ceinture de forteresses.

Nous trouvons dans ce texte, un autre exemple de la grandeur de Salomon : il commença son œuvre par le « bon côté », en construisant d'abord la maison de Dieu, et en la terminant avant de commencer les travaux de sa propre habitation ; c'est alors que Dieu le bénit, et le roi prospéra dans toutes ses entreprises.

Que la piété régisse d'abord nos actes, et le bénéfice résultant suivra. Gardez la meilleure part pour la fin ! Quelles que soient les peines que nous puissions supporter pour la gloire de Dieu et dans notre consécration pour autrui, nous en tirerons toutes les récompenses promises par le ciel. Canaan, la terre sainte, la « gloire » de toutes les nations, ne possédait aucune mine d'or, mais était néanmoins, un endroit merveilleux : cela montre que le meilleur que puisse donner un pays, est bien ce qui concrétise la vie de tous les jours pour le peuple. Salomon disposait d'un nombre impressionnant de biens matériels, mais nous a communiqué, par son enseignement, un héritage spirituel bien meilleur, disponible pour le riche comme pour le pauvre. La Sagesse est préférable à ce que peuvent procurer l'argent, et l'or fin, Proverbes 3:14.
