Pour comprendre ce passage sur la destination de la loi, il faut se rappeler l'enseignement apostolique touchant la justification.

Celui que l'apôtre nomme le juste, (1Timothée 1.9) n'est jamais l'homme qui est parvenu à un certain degré de justice propre par l'observation de la loi, (Romains 3.20, note) mais le croyant qui est justifié devant Dieu par la foi. (Romains 1.17, note ; Romains 3.24, note.)

Cette justification, fruit de sa réconciliation avec Dieu, rend le chrétien capable d'aimer la loi de Dieu, parce qu'il aime Dieu ; or, "l'amour est l'accomplissement de la loi." (Romains 13.10)

L'Esprit de Dieu, répandu dans ce cœur régénéré, y devient une loi vivante ; la loi écrite, avec ses prescriptions et ses condamnations, ne le régit plus, si ce n'est pour exercer toujours plus complètement en lui son ministère de mort, (Romains 7.10, note) et pour le rejeter plus complètement dans la foi. Le but de la loi est atteint quand elle s'est rendue superflue par son action même. (Romains 6.14, note ; Galates 5.18)

Mais il n'en est pas ainsi pour l'homme inconverti, à qui la loi n'a point encore fait sentir son péché ; la loi est là spécialement pour lui. Et l'apôtre choisit à dessein les termes les plus forts, cite les transgressions les plus grossières, afin de faire sentir d'autant plus vivement l'erreur des faux docteurs qui se glorifiaient de la loi, tout en en méconnaissant la spiritualité, et qui la considéraient comme supérieure à l'Evangile de la grâce, par lequel seul pourtant l'homme parvient à accomplir réellement la volonté de Dieu.

En même temps, Paul laisse entrevoir (comme Romains 2.17, suivants) que ceux qui, dans leur aveuglement et leur orgueil, se glorifient de la loi, sont les premiers violateurs de la loi.

- On peut remarquer que, dans ce triste catalogue des transgresseurs de la loi, l'apôtre nomme d'abord (en six termes divers) ceux qui pèchent contre Dieu et les choses saintes, puis ceux qui violent leurs obligations à l'égard du prochain. Dans cette dernière énumération, il suit à peu près l'ordre de la seconde table du décalogue.

- Sur ce mot voleurs d'hommes, comparez Exode 21.16, où il s'agit d'hommes qu'on dérobait pour les vendre comme esclaves. Ce crime n'a pas encore disparu de la terre.

On n'attendait pas ici ce mot de saine doctrine, mais plutôt quelque expression se rapportant à la morale et à la pratique du bien. Mais, pour les écrivains sacrés, la doctrine, ou la vérité, est inséparable de la sainteté, et l'erreur intimement unie au péché.

Ainsi le terme même de saine doctrine, qui revient souvent dans les épîtres pastorales, (1Timothée 6.3 ; 2Timothée 1.13 ; 4.3 ; 1.9-13 ; 2.1,2) suppose qu'il peut y avoir une doctrine moralement malsaine, nuisible à la santé de l'âme. (1Timothée 6.4 ; 2Timothée 2.16,17)

C'est aussi pour cela qu'on trouve si souvent dans ces lettres l'idée que la foi ne saurait exister sans la bonne conscience. (1Timothée 1.5, note.)
