Le but de l'apôtre, en mentionnant ces grandes vérités du salut, est évident : celles-ci sont l'inébranlable fondement de l'exhortation qui précède, de sa propre expérience qu'il va rappeler, (2Timothée 1.11,12) et de l'encouragement qu'il y ajoute pour son disciple : (2Timothée 1.13)

"Rien, en effet, n'anime tant un cœur qui connaît la grâce, à tout faire et à tout souffrir pour Dieu, que la vue de la miséricorde toute gratuite dont il l'a prévenu" (Quesnel), et que l'assurance du salut éternel, fondé sur le dessein de la grâce de Dieu.

Cette grâce abaisse l'homme jusque dans la poussière, mais pour l'élever au-dessus de tout crainte ; elle le dépouille de toute force propre, mais pour le revêtir de la puissance de Dieu. (2Timothée 1.7,8)

- Du reste, chacune de ces vérités qui constituent l'Evangile, se retrouve ailleurs, sous la plume du même apôtre, et est expliquée en son lieu.

"La grâce qui nous a été donnée avant les temps éternels." Ailleurs (1Corinthiens 2.7) Paul dit seulement que le salut nous était "destiné." Mais ce que Dieu nous destine, c'est comme s'il nous l'avait déjà donné.
