Ces mots : selon l'Evangile, ne se rapportent pas seulement à ce qui précède immédiatement, comme s'ils devaient caractériser "la sainte doctrine," mais à toute la pensée exprimée aux 1Timothée 1.8-11 sur la vraie destination de la loi. L'Evangile confirme cette destination en mettant la loi à sa vraie place, en montrant que l'homme, humilié, condamné par cette loi, ne peut ensuite être sauvé que par la grâce.

- C'est pour cela même que cet Evangile est si glorieux aux yeux de l'apôtre : l'Evangile de la gloire du Dieu bienheureux. Il proclame la gloire, la miséricorde, l'amour de ce Dieu souverainement heureux, qui veut, par l'Evangile, faire part de ce bonheur suprême à de pauvres et misérables créatures.
