Selon les mœurs orientales, c'était déjà une grande liberté pour les femmes que de paraître dans des assemblées publiques.

Les apôtres avaient donc raison de désirer qu'elles évitassent dans leur mise tout ce qui aurait pu prêter à la calomnie de la part des adversaires de la foi, (1Pierre 3.3-5) et qu'en général leur vie fût ornée, non des objets de luxe, aliments de la vanité, mais de bonnes œuvres, servant à l'édification.

Il serait peu conforme à l'Evangile, qui est la loi de la liberté, de vouloir astreindre les femmes chrétiennes à observer à la lettre ces préceptes qui peuvent varier selon les temps, les mœurs et les positions ; mais très certainement l'esprit de ces recommandations est universellement violé en nos temps Il est tout simplement scandaleux de voir une femme faisant profession de piété, qui cherche à attirer sur elle les regards par son luxe et qui se montre esclave de la mode.
