Les hommes seuls, par opposition aux femmes, (1Timothée 2.9) selon la signification du mot grec. Il s'agit ici des assemblées publiques. (1Timothée 2.12)

- Par ces mots l'apôtre revient à sa recommandation de 1Timothée 2.1.

Dans toutes les assemblées, et partout où ils se trouvent, puisque Dieu est partout présent pour les entendre.

- Ces paroles prouvent aussi que dans l'Eglise apostolique tous les hommes, tous ceux qui avaient le don de la prière, étaient admis à offrir à Dieu les requêtes de l'assemblée. On ne connaissait point encore l'office exclusif du prêtre ou du pasteur.

Elever les mains en priant, comme pour recevoir de Dieu ce qu'on lui demande, était un usage israélite. (Psaumes 28.2 ; 44.21 ; Psaumes 141.2)

Ces paroles semblent indiquer que les premiers chrétiens avaient la même coutume. Mais, ce qui est plus important, ces mains doivent être pures (Grec : "saintes") et le cœur libre de passions. La prière est parfaitement incompatible avec les mauvais sentiments du cœur, et avec les divisions au sein d'un troupeau.

Au temps de l'Évangile, la prière ne doit pas être seulement pratiquée dans un lieu spécifiquement réservé, mais chacun peut prier dans quelque endroit où il se trouve. Nous devons prier dans nos chambres, en famille, lors de nos repas, lorsque nous sommes en voyage, dans les rassemblements solennels, qu’ils soient publics ou privés. Nous devons prier pour les autres avec amour, l’esprit en paix, sans hypocrisie, ni colère. Nous devons prier avec foi, en chassant les doutes éventuels et les vaines pensées.

Les femmes qui professent la piété doivent être vêtues avec modestie, sans apparat ni luxe. Les bonnes œuvres sont le meilleur des ornements ; celles-ci ont une grande valeur aux yeux de Dieu. La modestie et la simplicité sont plus de mise dans les vêtements que l'élégance et la mode ! IL serait bon que tous ceux qui enseignent sérieusement la piété, gardent une certaine simplicité vestimentaire. Ils devraient dépenser plus de temps et d'argent à soulager le malade et l'affligé que dans leur parure, voire ceux de leurs enfants.

Ne pas exercer tout devoir inhérent à la piété équivaut à être coupable. Ces pensées ne sont pas sans importance, il s’agit en fait de commandements divins. Les meilleurs ornements de ceux qui professent la piété, sont leurs bonnes œuvres.

D'après l’apôtre Paul, il n'est pas permis aux femmes d'enseigner dans l'église ; l'enseignement est en fait une fonction qui revêt une certaine autorité. Par contre, les femmes peuvent et doivent enseigner les principes de la véritable piété à leurs enfants, dans le cadre familial. Elles ne doivent pas penser être excusables de ne pas étudier le chemin qui mène au salut, bien qu'elles ne doivent pas usurper l'autorité paternelle. Le fait que la femme ait été créée après l’homme doit la garder dans la soumission, elle fut d’ailleurs la première à transgresser l’ordre divin...

Ce texte se termine par une parole de réconfort : les femmes qui persévèreront dans la pondération, seront sauvées en ayant des enfants : le Messie est en effet né d'une femme ! Les douleurs particulières (l’enfantement) auxquelles les femmes sont assujetties, doivent amener les hommes à exercer leur autorité avec beaucoup de douceur, de tendresse, et d'affection !
