1 וַיַּ֤עַשׂ אָסָא֙ הַטּ֣וֹב וְהַיָּשָׁ֔ר בְּעֵינֵ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָֽיו׃2 וַיָּ֛סַר אֶת־מִזְבְּח֥וֹת הַנֵּכָ֖ר וְהַבָּמ֑וֹת וַיְשַׁבֵּר֙ אֶת־הַמַּצֵּב֔וֹת וַיְגַדַּ֖ע אֶת־הָאֲשֵׁרִֽים׃3 וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לִֽיהוּדָ֔ה לִדְר֕וֹשׁ אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם וְלַעֲשׂ֖וֹת הַתּוֹרָ֥ה וְהַמִּצְוָֽה׃4 וַיָּ֙סַר֙ מִכָּל־עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה אֶת־הַבָּמ֖וֹת וְאֶת־הַֽחַמָּנִ֑ים וַתִּשְׁקֹ֥ט הַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה לְפָנָֽיו׃5 וַיִּ֛בֶן עָרֵ֥י מְצוּרָ֖ה בִּיהוּדָ֑ה כִּֽי־שָׁקְטָ֣ה הָאָ֗רֶץ וְאֵין־עִמּ֤וֹ מִלְחָמָה֙ בַּשָּׁנִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה כִּֽי־הֵנִ֥יחַ יְהוָ֖ה לֽוֹ׃6 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לִֽיהוּדָ֜ה נִבְנֶ֣ה ׀ אֶת־הֶעָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֗לֶּה וְנָסֵ֨ב חוֹמָ֣ה וּמִגְדָּלִים֮ דְּלָתַ֣יִם וּבְרִיחִים֒ עוֹדֶ֨נּוּ הָאָ֜רֶץ לְפָנֵ֗ינוּ כִּ֤י דָרַ֙שְׁנוּ֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ דָּרַ֕שְׁנוּ וַיָּ֥נַֽח לָ֖נוּ מִסָּבִ֑יב וַיִּבְנ֖וּ וַיַּצְלִֽיחוּ׃7 וַיְהִ֣י לְאָסָ֗א חַיִל֮ נֹשֵׂ֣א צִנָּ֣ה וָרֹמַח֒ מִֽיהוּדָה֙ שְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֣וֹת אֶ֔לֶף סוּמִבִּנְיָמִ֗ן נֹשְׂאֵ֤י מָגֵן֙ וְדֹ֣רְכֵי קֶ֔שֶׁת מָאתַ֥יִם וּשְׁמוֹנִ֖ים אָ֑לֶף כָּל־אֵ֖לֶּה גִּבּ֥וֹרֵי חָֽיִל׃8 וַיֵּצֵ֨א אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם זֶ֣רַח הַכּוּשִׁ֗י בְּחַ֙יִל֙ אֶ֣לֶף אֲלָפִ֔ים וּמַרְכָּב֖וֹת שְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֑וֹת וַיָּבֹ֖א עַד־מָרֵשָֽׁה׃9 וַיֵּצֵ֥א אָסָ֖א לְפָנָ֑יו וַיַּֽעַרְכוּ֙ מִלְחָמָ֔ה בְּגֵ֥יא צְפַ֖תָה לְמָרֵשָֽׁה׃10 וַיִּקְרָ֨א אָסָ֜א אֶל־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָיו֮ וַיֹּאמַר֒ יְהוָ֗ה אֵֽין־עִמְּךָ֤ לַעְזוֹר֙ בֵּ֥ין רַב֙ לְאֵ֣ין כֹּ֔חַ עָזְרֵ֜נוּ יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ כִּֽי־עָלֶ֣יךָ נִשְׁעַ֔נּוּ וּבְשִׁמְךָ֣ בָ֔אנוּ עַל־הֶהָמ֖וֹן הַזֶּ֑ה יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ אַ֔תָּה אַל־יַעְצֹ֥ר עִמְּךָ֖ אֱנֽוֹשׁ׃11 וַיִּגֹּ֤ף יְהוָה֙ אֶת־הַכּוּשִׁ֔ים לִפְנֵ֥י אָסָ֖א וְלִפְנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ הַכּוּשִֽׁים׃12 וַיִּרְדְּפֵ֨ם אָסָ֜א וְהָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־עִמּוֹ֮ עַד־לִגְרָר֒ וַיִּפֹּ֤ל מִכּוּשִׁים֙ לְאֵ֣ין לָהֶ֣ם מִֽחְיָ֔ה כִּֽי־נִשְׁבְּר֥וּ לִפְנֵֽי־יְהוָ֖ה וְלִפְנֵ֣י מַחֲנֵ֑הוּ וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ שָׁלָ֖ל הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃13 וַיַּכּ֗וּ אֵ֤ת כָּל־הֶֽעָרִים֙ סְבִיב֣וֹת גְּרָ֔ר כִּי־הָיָ֥ה פַֽחַד־יְהוָ֖ה עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וַיָּבֹ֙זּוּ֙ אֶת־כָּל־הֶ֣עָרִ֔ים כִּֽי־בִזָּ֥ה רַבָּ֖ה הָיְתָ֥ה בָהֶֽם׃14 וְגַם־אָהֳלֵ֥י מִקְנֶ֖ה הִכּ֑וּ וַיִּשְׁבּ֨וּ צֹ֤אן לָרֹב֙ וּגְמַלִּ֔ים וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

1 Asa agit bien, il fait ce qui est juste aux yeux du SEIGNEUR son Dieu.2 Il supprime les autels des dieux étrangers et les lieux sacrés. Il casse les pierres dressées et il coupe les poteaux sacrés.3 Il commande aux gens de Juda de chercher le SEIGNEUR, le Dieu de leurs ancêtres, et d’obéir à sa loi et à ses commandements.4 Asa supprime les lieux sacrés et les autels à parfums dans toutes les villes de Juda. Alors, pendant qu’il est roi, le royaume est calme.5 Pendant ces années-là, il n’y a pas de guerre, parce que le SEIGNEUR lui-même lui donne la paix. Puisque le pays est tranquille, Asa construit des villes bien protégées.6 Il dit aux gens de Juda : « Nous avons cherché le SEIGNEUR notre Dieu. Nous l’avons cherché, et il nous a donné la tranquillité de tous côtés. Pendant que le pays est encore à nous, construisons ces villes, mettons des murs tout autour avec des tours et des portes à verrous. » Et les gens réussissent à construire des villes bien protégées.7 Asa a une armée de 300 000 hommes de la tribu de Juda, qui portent le grand bouclier et la lance. Il a aussi 280 000 soldats de la tribu de Benjamin. Ils portent le petit bouclier et ils savent tirer des flèches. Ce sont tous des combattants courageux.8 Zéra, l’Éthiopien, vient les attaquer avec une armée d’un million d’hommes et 300 chars de guerre. Il arrive jusqu’à Marécha.9 Asa marche à sa rencontre. Lui et ses soldats se rangent pour le combat dans la vallée de Sefata, près de Marécha.10 Asa appelle le SEIGNEUR son Dieu au secours. Il dit : « SEIGNEUR, toi seul tu peux aider le faible comme le puissant. Viens alors à notre aide, SEIGNEUR Dieu ! Oui, c’est sur toi que nous nous appuyons. C’est en ton nom que nous marchons contre cette immense armée. SEIGNEUR, tu es notre Dieu. Ne permets pas qu’un homme remporte la victoire sur toi. »11 Grâce au SEIGNEUR, Asa et l’armée de Juda font reculer les Éthiopiens, qui se mettent à fuir.12 Asa et son armée les poursuivent jusqu’à Guérar. Les Éthiopiens tombent en si grand nombre qu’aucun soldat ne reste en vie. En effet, ils sont écrasés par le SEIGNEUR et par son armée. Les gens de Juda emportent beaucoup de richesses de guerre.13 Ils prennent ensuite toutes les villes proches de Guérar. En effet, leurs habitants ont très peur du SEIGNEUR. Les Judéens pillent ces villes, parce qu’ils trouvent là de très grandes richesses à prendre.14 Ils attaquent aussi les tentes des gardiens de troupeaux et ils emmènent un grand nombre de moutons et de chameaux. Ensuite, ils retournent à Jérusalem.

1 So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David; and Asa his son reigned in his place. In his days the land was quiet ten years.2 Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of Yahweh his God:3 for he took away the foreign altars, and the high places, and broke down the pillars, and cut down the Asherim,4 and commanded Judah to seek Yahweh, the God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.5 Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the sun images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.6 He built fortified cities in Judah; for the land was quiet, and he had no war in those years, because Yahweh had given him rest.7 For he said to Judah, "Let us build these cities, and make walls around them, with towers, gates, and bars. The land is yet before us, because we have sought Yahweh our God; we have sought him, and he has given us rest on every side." So they built and prospered.8 Asa had an army that bore bucklers and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bore shields and drew bows, two hundred eighty thousand: all these were mighty men of valor.9 There came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an army of a million troops, and three hundred chariots; and he came to Mareshah.10 Then Asa went out to meet him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.11 Asa cried to Yahweh his God, and said, "Yahweh, there is none besides you to help, between the mighty and him who has no strength. Help us, Yahweh our God; for we rely on you, and in your name are we come against this multitude. Yahweh, you are our God. Don't let man prevail against you."12 So Yahweh struck the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.13 Asa and the people who were with him pursued them to Gerar: and there fell of the Ethiopians so many that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before Yahweh, and before his army; and they carried away very much booty.14 They struck all the cities around Gerar; for the fear of Yahweh came on them: and they despoiled all the cities; for there was much spoil in them.15 They struck also the tents of livestock, and carried away sheep in abundance, and camels, and returned to Jerusalem.

Et les hauts-lieux...15.17 dit le contraire ; mais il faut peut-être distinguer entre les hauts-lieux consacrés à des divinités étrangères et ceux consacrés à Jéhova, ou bien l'on doit admettre qu'Asa essaya de faire disparaître les hauts-lieux, mais n'y réussit pas entièrement.
